A Fine Line

No one would understand that my submission empowered me, that I felt stronger kneeling at Gabriel’s feet than I ever had standing at Paul’s side.

Faye Austin seems to have it all--a fulfilling career, a successful husband, a beautiful home. But appearances can be deceptive and sometimes Faye can’t help thinking she’s living the wrong life. A lifetime of being compared to her beautiful younger sister, Ginny, has left her feeling second best, and a chance discovery while looking at her husband’s laptop has led her to realize that her marriage is not all it seems.

Then she meets the handsome Gabriel Scott, a man who likes to play sexual games of power and control, and suddenly everything makes sense. Gabriel’s natural dominance is so compelling that Faye feels her own submissiveness awakening in response, a reaction that both horrifies and excites her. She works with victims of domestic abuse and is adamant that no man will ever tell her what to do. But there’s something about Gabriel that draws her in and gives her a glimpse of who she really wants to be.

Can Gabriel give her what she needs? Or will Ginny get there first?

Excerpt

Once the front door was closed behind us, Gabriel slipped straight into Dominant mode. “My bedroom now,” he growled. “Take off everything except your jewelry. I want to see you standing in front of the mirror admiring yourself. I want you proud and haughty, Queen Boudicca, so I can humble you.”

In Gabriel’s room, the lights were off, the only illumination coming from the candles flickering on the fireplace. In one corner was a full-length, free-standing mirror and I stood before it naked except for my torque, my headband, my wristbands and my armlet, feeling more excited than I could ever remember.

I didn’t turn as he came in the room. He threw something down on the bed, but I didn’t look.

He came up behind me minus his shirt, but still wearing his breeches and riding boots. He stood behind me, his body not quite touching mine.

“So, Queen Boudicca,” he said, “here you are, naked and vulnerable, totally in my power. Are you ready to kneel to me and acknowledge me as your Master?”

I met his eyes in the mirror and stared back at him defiantly. “Never,” I said through gritted teeth.

Gabriel’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction. “So proud,” he said, bringing his hands to my breasts and squeezing my nipples painfully. “I shall take great pleasure in taming you, my lady.” He trailed one hand down my body and pulled my thighs apart and spread my lips, two fingers delving deep inside me. “You’re very wet, Boudicca,” he said in my ear. “Anyone would think you liked being conquered and subdued by your Master.”

“You’re not my Master,” I said, “and it’s Queen Boudicca to you.”

Gabriel laughed in delight. “Have you finished admiring yourself, Queen Boudicca? By the time I’ve finished with you, you’ll be too ashamed to look at yourself.”

He gathered up my hair then held it in his clenched fist at the nape of my neck and marched me across to the bed where wrist and ankle cuffs, bondage tape, a riding crop, a butt plug, lubricant and a flogger with short leather tails were laid out in a fearsome display.

“Are you still feeling so defiant, my lady?” he murmured, his voice like silk.

I couldn’t take my eyes off the implements lying on the bed and my knees trembled at the thought of what he intended to do to me.

“If at any moment you need me to stop,” he said, “you only need to say one word. Just call me Master and it will all stop.”

“You’ll wait a long time,” I said, playing my role with relish, despite my nerves.

“Oh, I think you’ll find I can be a very patient man,” he said. He kissed the back of my neck and shoulders, and the tenderness of his actions, in the light of what he intended to do to me, made me shiver. Gabriel certainly knew his craft. “You have one more chance, my lady,” he said. “Submit to me now or you’ll be flogged.”

I said nothing.

“Very well,” he said, picking up the wrist cuffs from the bed. He fastened them securely around my wrists, removing the decorative wristbands I’d been wearing. Then he passed long strips of tape through the rings in the cuffs and tied them to the bedposts and secured my ankles in the same way so I was held immobile, arms and legs outstretched, between the two posts.

For a split second, I felt a tiny frisson of fear as I realized I was totally helpless. But this was Gabriel. This was my Master and I would always be safe with him.

He picked up the clamps and attached them to my nipples, making me suck in my breath as they pinched the delicate flesh. Then he moved back to the bed and picked up the flogger.

I watched, hypnotized at the sight of him stripped to the waist, the warm glow of candlelight playing across his bare skin as he caressed the tails almost lovingly.

His eyes met mine and he smiled. “I will bring you to heel, my warrior woman, and you will kneel before me.”

Taking up position behind me, he let the tails of the flogger trail down my back then he began to whip me lightly on my back, shoulders, buttocks and the backs of my legs, the tails leaving a warm, tingling feeling everywhere they touched.

He flogged me gently for a good ten minutes, not saying a word. The only other sound apart from the slap of leather against flesh was my breathing, shallow and uneven. Then my skin began to feel hot and sensitive and I let out a whimper.

“Feeling submissive yet, my queen?” Gabriel whispered, his breath hot in my ear.

“No,” I whispered back. This was a lie. I was feeling submissive, but this role-play was so erotic I wasn’t ready to give in just yet.

He flogged me harder, concentrating on my buttocks, and the tails began to sting where they touched and I let out a cry in spite of myself.

“Just say the word and it will all be over,” murmured my torturer seductively.

I shook my head fiercely.

Gabriel kept whipping until some sixth sense must have told him I was near capitulation, and he stopped. He stroked my smarting flesh with cool fingers. “Well, my lady, you took your flogging like a true queen, but let’s see if I can shame you into submission.”

He arranged two pillows one on top of the other on the bed then untied my wrists and ankles. “Face down over those pillows,” he said in a tone that left no room for argument.

I lay flat with the pillows under my belly, wincing as my breasts were crushed against the mattress and the tiny clamps on my nipples seemed to bite cruelly. As I lay there, trembling with anticipation, my pussy throbbed deliciously and I knew I was dripping wet for my Master.

Release Blitz & Giveaway ~ Ripple Effect, Episode 1, by Keri Lake

Ripley

They call me RIP.
I’m a killer. A murderer. A psychopath.
In the eyes of the righteous, I’m a monster, born of sin and depravity.
I want to protect her, but I’m not a good man.
I want to love her, but I no longer feel.
She gets under my skin, though, and has awakened something inside of me.
Something I’d kill for.
I’m not her savior—not even close. In fact, I’m worse than the hell she’s already suffered.
I’m her vengeance. Tit for tat, as they say.
And if she’s not careful, I’ll be her ruin.

Dylan

For months, I’ve watched him.
I’ve fantasized him as my savior, my lover. My ticket out of the hell I’ve lived in for the last six years.
I never dreamed he’d be my nightmare.
Had I known what he really is, I’d have never gotten in the car that night, but life is full of cause and effect.
And sometimes the choice on offer isn’t a choice at all.
It’s the result of something already in motion, and we’re merely left to survive the ripple effect.

*This is an erotic suspense/erotic romance not recommended for readers under the age of 18 due to graphic violence and sex.

Prologue

Ripley

Ripple effect: noun
1. a spreading effect or series of consequences caused by a single action or event

“Do you want to live?” The barrel of the gun presses into my temple, still warm from the bullets that were shot into my stepmother, who now lies in a lifeless heap in the corner. “This moment will determine whether or not I pull the trigger.”

The stranger’s breath smells of warm tobacco and liquor.

Thick red blood pools at my boots, and my eyes follow the scarlet trail across the wooden planks to the wounded man, crawling on his elbows toward the door.

I just sliced through the back of his knees with a blade, like a robot at the gunman’s command. Sixteen years of being a relatively normal kid ripped out of my hands, as I watch my first victim, about to make myself a murderer.

My lips are dry. So is my throat, fuzzy and scratchy like cotton. Fear will do that, but so can excitement.

Staring down at my hands, coated in his blood, I suddenly long to wash him off of me, to keep him from infecting me, but I can’t yet. I have to finish him. That’s what the stranger with the gun has asked me to do.

Kill my father.

With slow, stalking steps, I follow behind, until he turns over onto his back, and the gore of the last hour bleeds out of more wounds than I can count.

“Tell me, boy.” His voice is raspy, gravelly, and carries a slight gurgle from whatever is backing up in his throat. In spite of the panting rise and fall of his chest, he lets out a hearty laugh and slaps a hand to his heart with a hacking cough that sprouts a glob of blood onto his lip. “What’s yours … feel like?” Blood coats his teeth and choppy words confess he’s losing to death. “Tell you what … mine felt like. Your momma … she was … a beautiful kill. Fucking … begged me not to hurt you. Told me … I could do whatever … I wanted to her. So long as I left … you alone.” Another laugh and he twists to the side, vomiting blood onto the floor beside him. After a pause, he wipes his face across his sleeve and continues, “So I did … everything … to that whoring cunt.”

I tighten my fingers around the blade’s hilt, and despite the rage that snakes through my veins, I don’t yet finish him. I’ve waited too long for this. Night after night, I fantasized of these very seconds and the final words I’d say to him.

With the gun pointed at my back, I find the courage to kill or be killed. “Every … stab. Like butter. And when I slit her throat …” A sickly cough ends on a choking fit and the wet clap in his chest tells me I punctured his lung earlier. “Last thing she mouthed … was your name.”

I kneel down beside him and reach out a hand that he bats away. I’m stronger than what little resistance is left in him, and I grip his skull, staring into his dark, soulless eyes. Both of mine are a different color—one blue, like my mother’s, and one hazel. One offers the ability to see a man’s true colors, the other allows me to watch him die without remorse. “You want to know how it feels to hurt you?” The detachment in my voice is foreign to me. Calm.

His lips stretch into a bloodstained smile. “Yes. Tell me. Tell me … how it feels.”

I stab the knife into his throat and give a brutal turn of the blade, watching his eyes widen in horror as his hand flies to the hilt. Gripping his hair tight, I tip his head back and guide his eyes to mine. “I feel nothing.”

His brows dip with a frown and focus on mine for a moment as he gasps for the air that’ll never save him now.

I push off of him, surprised at the apathy washing over me while he grasps at the gaping wound in his windpipe. Surely a son should feel something for his father. And yet, I don’t. He’d beaten the love out of me a long time ago, leaving nothing but a hollow that has since filled with hate.

From behind, a firm grip of my shoulder has me looking down to the gold lion ring on the hand curled there, and back to the man wearing a black shirt and slacks, who stands behind me.

“Well done, Ripley.” He puffs his cigar and gives a squeeze of my shoulder. “Well done, my boy.”

The man who freed me from my cage disappears into the dark room behind me, and when I turn my attention back on the one I’ve just killed, a terrifying reality settles over me.

I’ve traded one cage for another.

Writing books had been a big part of my life for many years; whether it was writing in secret notebooks during class, writing amateur novels or posting stories online, I surrounded myself with it.

Of course, it has its up and downs, but I've never once thought that writing wasn't for me.

Because of that, I can share the worlds I discover in my head with the outside world, and although that might sound crazy to some, it's fine by me. So long as I can do what I love, I'm happy.

And every person who's happy as a result of my writing is a bonus for which, I'm forever grateful for.

Synopsis

Calliph and Mateo are back! The peace of the shifter pair's calm, quiet life is shattered by a visit from one of Calliph's old pack members. Calliph must travel to the town of his birth, Naolassel, to speak on behalf of his twin brother, Rupos, who has been charged with murder. But Calliph's decision will endanger his beloved kitten...not to mention their relationship. Can Mateo reconcile with who Calliph was--and what he did--during the war, or is the truth of his wolf too much to bear?

Previously published by Noble Romance.
Excerpt

Mateo sat next to Calliph as the carriage rolled and bumped along. Calliph held himself rigid and tense, jaw tightly clenched. Across from them was Paular, with his legs crossed and his hands folded in his lap. He and Calliph hadn't stopped staring at each other since the journey had begun. Mateo had tried to make small talk at first, but the wolves' disinterest had quickly become obvious. Though Calliph had indulged him with a few answers, they had been short and terse, and Mateo had given up.

Outside the snow fell, sticking to the windows and sliding down to collect in an ever-growing ledge of white. Mateo could barely see out the window to his left, but what he could make out alarmed him: high-banked drifts of snow. The carriage moved slower and slower, and by the time the blackness of night had enveloped them, they were forced to stop.

Paular's human driver dismounted and came to the door, tugging it open with a grunt. "The snow is too thick for the wheels," he explained, forced to yell over the howling winds. "I'm going to unhook the carriage, and tie the horses under the trees. I'll stay here. You'll have to continue on foot if you want to keep going." He surveyed the three of them. "Or paws, I guess."

Calliph left the carriage first and helped Mateo down. He unfastened his cloak and slid it around Mateo's shoulders over Mateo's own. "You will stay with the horses."

"No." Mateo shook his head as he pulled the cloak tight. "I'm going with you."

"Naolassel is still hours away. It's a treacherous journey for you." Calliph took him by his upper arms and looked into his eyes. "And you know why."

Mateo frowned. All Paular and Calliph had to do was shift and continue -- their thick, furry coats would keep them warm. However, unable to hold his panther form for long, Mateo didn't have such an option. While running wasn't nearly as strenuous as fighting, he would be able to go only so far until he'd be forced to revert to his human form. And humans didn't do well in the cold -- he was already shivering.

"I'll send a carriage for you when we reach Naolassel." Calliph turned and strode away to speak with Paular, who was helping the driver with the horses.

Mateo's frown deepened. The prospect of spending a frozen night huddled in the carriage with the human, surrounded by the stench of horses wasn't one he relished. He grabbed Calliph's arm as the werewolf walked by. "I'm going."

Calliph stopped and looked down at him. "Kitten..."

"Don't ask me to stay behind without you." Playing on something he knew Calliph wouldn't be able to ignore -- his fear of being alone -- he leaned into Calliph and laid his head on Calliph's chest. Manipulation wasn't a talent he was particularly proud of, but it would get him to Naolassel with Calliph. "Please."

The tension melted from Calliph's body and he relaxed into the embrace as he slid his arms around Mateo. He pressed a kiss to Mateo's forehead. "You're a manipulative little bastard, you know that?"

Mateo nodded. He went back to the carriage and rearranged their clothing into one bag, had the human strap the bag to his back, and they were off.

“What are you thinking about?” He finally asked.

“Last night.” An honest answer with no probing from him.

“The bath?” He grinned.

“No,” She laughed. “Although, who would have guessed that your shower head could do so much more than rinse my hair. I was thinking about what happened before the bath. I think we can take it off my limit’s list.” A subtle blush.

“Take what off your list?” A small push.

She sighed. “Isn’t it enough that I like it? That I’m willing to do it again? Do I have to say it?” Her eyes didn’t meet his.

“Tell me what it is that can come off the limits list, and tell me you want to do it again. Willing makes it sound like you will endure it- and I remember last night very clearly. You did more than endure it.”

“What will you do when I get so used to your way of talking that I stop blushing?”

“Tell me.” He wouldn’t let her veer off course.

She pierced her lips together and let out a long breath through her nose. She had already resigned herself to obeying, but she needed a moment to realize it. “You can take anal off my list. I would like to do it again.” She shoved a forkful of eggs into her mouth. “And again.” She grinned.
