Synopsis

Abandoned by her people, a young woman was being sent to her doom.

Kelly was going to be a prisoner; a slave. At least that’s what she thought as she waited for the mysterious giants that lived on the Black Isles to claim her. A human sacrifice, once every eight years. That’s what it took to keep mankind safe from these savages.

The human would ensure the survival of his bloodline. Whether he liked it or not.

Broc’s reign as King of the Black Isles had lasted seven years already. That was a long time to go without a queen and therefore, an heir. He knew what he had to do; to claim the human offering and make her his own.

When they met, it changed everything. A glimmer of hope, even of love, in unexpected places. But life on the Black Isles was far from simple. And there were powerful secrets, yet to be uncovered, that could change everything yet again.

Claimed by the King is the first in Lorelei Moone’s brand new fantasy romance series, Shifters of Black Isle. Shifters, magic and relatable characters; set in a mysterious, distant land, where anything seems possible, and yet all its inhabitants hold dear could be destroyed in an instant.

Broc held on to his sword tightly, the leather of his gloves creaking loudly under his powerful grip. He could hear it, despite the screeching winds and waves battering the wooden boat.

Although they were at peace with the men of West Hythe, one could never be too careful.

Every eight years, the humans had held up their end of the bargain, though. They had left a suitable young woman behind on the shore near their villages, and nobody had stayed behind to watch the giants’ arrival or possibly interfere.

In any case, the timing of this exchange was carefully thought out: nights on the Northern Sea were always foggy this time of year. If anyone had stayed behind, they would have to be very nearby indeed to be able to see a thing.

Looking around the wooden longship, Broc could see a lot of his people were much more excited about tonight's festivities than he was. Their chatter was even louder than the rhythmic drum setting the speed for the rowers.
He hated to have to do this; to tear a young girl away from the only life she had known and take her to the Isles against her will. Sadly there was no other way to ensure the survival of their bloodline; without this tradition, Broc’s people might become even extinct.

After the Great War, many of their number had fallen. Outnumbered, and overpowered by the sorcerers who had sided with humankind, their kind had retreated to the Black Isles and left the mainland to be ruled by men. However, their reduced numbers had meant that they would need fresh blood to replenish their line.

One can only interbreed for so long before things start to go wrong and madness sets in.

He had seen it happen with his own two eyes.

If he squinted, he could just about see the shore through the dense fog. Luckily, his people had a lot better vision than the humans, meaning they could safely navigate the treacherous waters around Hythe Bay to collect the latest addition to their clan.

Broc had first pick, as was tradition.

There was no way he could get out of it either. He'd been king of the Black Mountain and surrounding isles for seven years, ever since his father had sailed off into the next realm.

It was time to start thinking about an heir, whether he liked it or not.

"Wonder what this one's going to be like," Rhea next to him remarked, her tone sharp with spite. Her comment was a reference to the trouble they’d had last time. Transitions could be difficult.

He glanced over at the strong young princess, his cousin twice removed, as she stared darkly over the water leading to the coast. It was obvious she'd wanted to be his queen, but it wasn't meant to be. A union between them would have been forbidden, in any case.

They were too closely related. And they even shared the same animal form.

Broc had always aimed to be a fair ruler; he could not make an exception to such an important rule for himself. The consequences would be too severe; the islanders’ mating rules existed for a reason.

A king must do everything within his power to ensure a healthy heir is produced. In his case this had meant taking a human as his bride instead of the relative he’d grown up with. Although he hadn’t made his intentions about this Reaping public yet, Rhea had guessed. And she had made it a point to openly express her displeasure.

Shortly before the keel of their ship threatened to hit ground, Teaq, Broc's half-brother and commander of the Black Isle armies, gave the order to steady the oars and drop anchor. Impeccable timing as always.

Broc observed as Rhea and Teaq shared a dark look. It was obvious they each disapproved of tonight’s goings on for their own reasons.

"There she is," Teaq spat, unable to disguise his disgust.

His tone rubbed Broc the wrong way. It wasn’t the girl’s fault she had been sent to them as an offering in the Reaping. And what exactly had sparked Teaq’s dislike of human females, Broc had not yet understood.

"Remember, she will be shown the respect deserving of any citizen of the Black Isles," Broc spoke in a low, determined tone.

Teaq’s jaw tensed, but he did not respond.

"Yes, my king." Rhea averted her eyes from the shore and retreated to the back of the ship to stand watch over the waters behind them. As commander of the royal guard, it was her duty to ensure Broc wasn’t ambushed.

“Just remember what we discussed,” Teaq grumbled. “These are troubled times. The last thing we need is further complications within our own walls.”

Broc nodded.

When their father had conducted the last Reaping ritual, the girl had found it incredibly difficult to adjust to her new surroundings. For some time it was feared they’d lose her to madness, but thankfully she had recovered and integrated into their way of life some months later.

They’d instituted a new rule; the newcomer would not be fully introduced into their ways until she had obviously adjusted to her new circumstances. Teaq had wanted for things to go much further; including keeping the girl on house arrest for the first month; something Broc had vehemently disagreed with. As king, the final decision had obviously been his.

They would keep her in the dark, figuratively, but she would be as free as any of the other inhabitants of the Black Isles. At least as far as her movements within the castle on Black Mountain were concerned.

Still, it was for the best to be cautious. She did not need to know the truth about everything from the start. Humans did not handle it well when their views of the world were challenged.

“I wish you’d reconsider and at least let me put a watch on her. We do not know of her intentions,” Teaq added.

Broc scoffed. Her intentions. This was just going to be some unfortunate girl who thought she was being sent to her death.

Just like the last ones.

Lately Teaq had grown more and more paranoid. They had enough to worry about with the threats from further out at sea. As long as the humans continued to hold up their end of the truce, their peace would hold.

“Alright. That’s enough of that,” Broc said. “We’ve laid down the rules already. But I won’t have her treated as a prisoner under my rule. Let’s get on with what we came here to do.”

The many dozen or so soldiers onboard held their heads bowed as Broc strode past towards the port beam, which was by now perfectly lined up with the shoreline.

Teaq signaled the all clear and jumped over the side, landing squarely on his feet in the waist-deep water. Broc followed.

They were back on track, but this wasn’t the end of that particular discussion; Broc was certain of it. Teaq’s stubbornness was in part because as the older brother he’d always expected to get first right to the throne. He wasn’t good at following orders.

Too bad for him that their father, the late King Ryk, hadn't seen it that way. They had fought it out just like in the old days. Hand-to-hand combat.

Obviously, it was Broc’s victory that had earned him the honor of ruling over the Black Isles. Whether Teaq liked it or not.

The salty water of the Northern Sea was close to freezing, but Broc—as well as the rest of his clan—were used to it. They were much better suited to cold temperatures than humans were.

Despite the saltiness in the air, Broc could smell the human from across the stony beach. Her scent was sweet, almost floral, with a hint of something sharp. Fear, perhaps.

His inner beast stirred. A new sort of sensation came over him. Although he hadn’t even seen her yet, he knew how this Reaping was going to end. She would be his. And she would give him his much awaited heir. It was a bittersweet prospect.

The poor girl had no idea what was in store for her.

Synopsis

It has only been a few months since humanity has found out about the shifters that live in their midst. When the New Alliance leadership asks Eric King to join Alpha Squad, a joint taskforce supposed to promote cooperation between the shifters and human authorities, his loyalty to the cause doesn’t give him any choice but to agree. But is the squad actually supposed to be relevant, or is it just an eyewash, set up by the new Secretary for Shifter Affairs to make himself look good? And how is he going to concentrate on his training, when his inner bear is insisting that the squad leader is his true mate?

Major Janine Williams is not at all pleased when she is ordered to set up Alpha Squad. The initiative is just a gimmick, meant to pacify the shifter community, plus none of her male colleagues had wanted the job. But when she starts getting to know her team, especially tough East London bear shifter, Eric, she starts to wonder if perhaps it will be possible to make this task force a success, so long as everyone works together. And so long as she can manage to keep her relationship with Eric strictly professional...

"I'll be back shortly," she mumbled as she fumbled with the tent's opening and staggered out.

The sky was clear, which was unusual for this part of the world. Countless stars lit up the tent site and surrounding rocks and shrubbery. Janine would have to walk downhill a bit for cover.

She took a deep breath and wrapped her warm jacket around herself. It was only late September, but the nights were already chilly in these hills. With the help of the star and moon light, Janine found the most gradual path down into some larger shrubs about thirty or so feet away from the summit.

She did not waste time, and soon after started her climb back up. That was when it all went wrong. A loose rock escaped from underneath her foot and sent her sliding down the side of the hill. She let out a low whimper as her hip hit a sharp protrusion on the way, all the while flailing and reaching out for whatever vegetation she could find to stop her fall.

This seemed to go on forever, until finally, she stopped slipping. But it wasn't a small tree or shrub that had broken her momentum, it was a firm hand around her wrist.

Janine looked up and found a pair of familiar eyes staring down at her. Eric King.

How in the world had he come to her rescue so quickly? There had been no activity around the camp as far as Janine saw. Perhaps he had been out and about as well.

"Gotcha," he said. "Terrain's treacherous around these hills." He glanced up at the summit, which was a good hundred feet away now.

God, that voice. Janine did not say a word as he lifted her back onto her feet; she could not find the words. Of course, it was not just his voice, it was his whole being that had affected her so. After trying so hard to do the best job she could, no matter what the assignment, at this moment, she wanted nothing more than to throw it all away.

You're mine. The same low growl entered her mind. This was totally the wrong time for her overactive imagination to kick in.

Am I? Am I yours? she thought.

I knew that you were from the moment I first saw you.

Janine was frozen in place, communicating with whatever that voice was—a figment of her own imagination perhaps—when Eric's eyes began to glow in the dark. In this light, it should not have been possible to make out their color, but they had very clearly turned warm amber.

"How are you doing this?" she stammered.

"Wait, you can actually hear me?" he asked, looking about as shocked as she felt.

Janine opened her mouth to say something, then closed it again and frowned.

I don't understand. I have my orders. I have a job to do. Why are you in my head?

A smile broke through Eric's formerly serious expression. Because I am meant to be in your head. For whatever reason, we are meant to be in each other's lives.

Janine shook her head. That does not make any sense. And anyway, I never knew shifters could read minds.

We can't. Only when we find our true mate can we hear their thoughts, and they can hear ours.

That was too much. Janine freed her wrist from Eric's grasp and started to walk away, still shaking her head. She could not accept this.

"Thanks for saving me," she mumbled as she fought the pain resulting from her fall and marched back toward camp. "I need some time to think."

Eric took a deep breath and closed his eyes. He should have just stayed behind at that service station, perhaps tried to strike up more of a conversation with the mysterious woman who had caught his eye there. Or ideally, he should have risked Henry's disapproval and refused to join the task force. Anything was better than this.

Back to the mystery woman. And what a woman she was. A regal beauty, with a voice that had set his heart alight. His inner bear had tried its best to claw to the surface; he'd hardly been able to control the urge to shift right there in front of her.

How would she have reacted if she'd seen his true form? Things had changed since the New Alliance's little stunt, coming out to the entire world media, but they hadn't changed that much for everyone. Humans were still apprehensive, and why wouldn't they be? Most of their kind were pretty damn scary looking.

Would she have screamed and run away? Or would she have been intrigued?

He would never find out of course, because he'd let that opportunity pass him by when Adam had dragged him back to the restaurant for lunch.

Where was she now? And was she thinking about their little encounter as much as he was?

So many questions he'd never get the answer to…

Instead, he was stuck here in this decrepit old building with a bunch of people, none of whom seemed to want to be here. Except Blackwood the wolf, maybe. He had seemed like the most cheerful person here after Adam.

The sound of the door disturbed his gloomy thoughts, but he tried to ignore the intrusion.

"Attention!" Private Callahan's voice filled the dorm.

Eric opened his eyes and sat up straight on his bed. The top of his head almost touched the springs underneath Adam's mattress above.

The private stepped aside and another woman marched into the room.

Was he still daydreaming? He could not believe who had entered—the woman he'd just been fantasizing about.

"Major Williams would like to say a few words," Private Callahan said.

Major Williams. Eric was speechless. He had expected a grey-haired man, gruff like the SAS guy across the room, but perhaps more polished. Their commander was a woman. His woman.

Major Williams scanned the room, slowly, pausing on each of the other trainees for a moment, then moving on to the next. Until she spotted Eric. She looked away instantly. Of course, she'd recognized him as well, and she did not look pleased to find him here.

"I am Major Janine Williams, your team leader. Welcome and thank you for joining Alpha Squad. Starting tomorrow, I will conduct your training, evaluate you, and report on the progress of this task force with the relevant higher authorities. The first phase of training starts in the morning and will last two weeks, at the end of which you will all be graded on various aspects of your performance. Anyone who is deemed unfit to continue will be asked to leave at that point, before phase two begins. Any questions?"

Questions? Eric had so many of those. He did not speak, though.

"What do you mean, unfit? I was told I was being transferred here permanently," Ben, the younger of the two humans complained.

"You shall address me as Major Williams or Ma'am, first of all. Secondly, this task force is not a joke. Only those who are worthy will make the cut." The major glared at him from across the room. Eric couldn't help but be impressed by her show of authority.

Cooper folded his arms and pressed his lips together.

"Do you understand? What's your name?"

"Ben Cooper, Ma'am. Yes, I understand."

Eric had trouble suppressing a smile. She wasn't going to take any crap from anyone, that much was obvious. It would only be a matter of time before Adam and the major would clash similarly. Amusingly, he found himself rooting not for his brother, but for the woman. Training under her command could get interesting.

She glanced at him for a split second, during which he did his best to hide his reaction. He would play along, fall in line, and do his best to fit into the squad. He owed it to Henry, but that was not the only reason. Fate had handed him a second chance after he recklessly failed to get her details earlier today. No matter what, Eric was not going to waste the opportunity. He'd prove his worth to her one way or another before training was over.

"All right then, at ease, everyone," the major said, "You have a big day ahead of you and I suggest you take rest."

Eric nodded, mostly to himself, and lay back on his cot again. Perhaps this whole Alpha Squad nonsense had a couple of silver linings after all.

What would you do if on your way home from your boring work, all of a sudden a handsome stranger leaps into the back of your car and asks you to drive him to the airport?

"Happy now?" I complain, while steering the car through the tight zig-zagging roads, heading for the other side of the housing estate. Heathrow it is. What terminal?

"Uhh..."

"Don't tell me you dont know? Do you have any idea how huge Heathrow is?" I exclaim.

"Give me a moment."

I turn to find the stranger looking at a phone-type device, just fatter, like a handheld satnav thing for hikers. My ex had something similar he took on treks.

"Four. Terminal 4."

"Great." I put my foot down as I join the A30, all the while keeping an eye on my speed which is close to touching fifty miles an hour. "How much time do we have?"

"Not much. Do your best," he says, while giving me a quick pat on the shoulder. I dont know whether its the adrenaline coursing through my body, or the fact that actually he's pretty hot for a crazy person, but his touch has an instant effect on me. I must be losing my mind to let this guy affect me at all.

"Fine. But if I get a ticket, I'm telling them you drove. I've got six points on my licence already and the insurance company will have me over a barrel if I get more," I ramble, my voice trembling slightly.

He lets out a chuckle and pats my shoulder again. "Deal. Now go."

He was right, once I put my mind to it, our progress towards Heathrow has greatly improved. I know these roads like the back of my hand, even if I still compulsively slow down at the speed camera leading up to the Terminal 4 ramp. I'm in this now, whether I want to be or not, but still I'm not willing to blatantly speed through a speed trap.

"Well reach it soon, then what? Do I park up, or what?"

I check my mirror, seeing that hes sitting upright now, staring out the rear window.

"Actually, let me out just there." He points at the mini roundabout ahead of us. "The cargo is headed for flight SV118 departing for Riyadh at eighteen-fifty. I'm going to try and intercept it. Pull over."

I slam on the brakes and turn to face him properly. His face is tense yet determined, as he gazes ahead through the metal fence surrounding the cargo area ahead of us.

"What's your name?" he asks, leaning forward and making eye contact again.

"Tess..." I mumble, severely distracted by the green depths in front of me again. Shit, why do I have a knack for attracting crazies? He's handsome though, the strong jawline, dark brown hair and symmetrical features are practically perfect. He could be a model, or an actor. Could all this just be an act?

"Tess. I know I'm asking a lot of you, but your country needs you." He pauses, his eyes lingering on my lips for a moment. "We can't let the plane leave. Give me your phone."

I hand it to him without protest. How is it that his eyes can hypnotise me like this? Shit, I must be desperate to be so easily distracted by a handsome guy in a suit. Once all this is over, I'm going to get Maggie to set me up with someone. She's been offering for weeks.

The stranger types a number into my phone and hits dial, then gives it back to me.

"I need you to go into the terminal and keep an eye on the departures board. If I'm successful, it will show up as 'delayed'. If not, then you'll see it's status change to boarding at around eighteen-twenty. If that's the case, I need you to call in a bomb threat to shut down the terminal. Do you understand?" He reaches out for my cheek, caressing it with the back of his finger and causing even more upheaval inside my stomach. This has got to be a dream, even if it feels totally real.

I nod though. If the plane boards, I call the airport with a bomb threat. Sounds easy.

"Wait, why dont you just report a bomb threat anyway? Why go through all this nonsense?" I ask.

He smiles briefly, pulling his hand back. "If I go in by myself, I may be able to detain some of the people involved. They may have intel. If I call it in now and the airport gets shut down, they'll run and we may never know who was behind it."

That makes sense, I guess.

I nod. "Fine. Ill go in."

"I'll be in touch if it went well."

"And if not?" I ask.

"Chances are, then I'll be dead."

What would you do if on your way home from your boring work, all of a sudden a handsome stranger leaps into the back of your car and asks you to drive him to the airport?

Be terrified? Threaten him and hope he gets out and leaves you alone? Those were my first instincts as well.

There was something in his eyes, something in the words he said that made me pause though. What if this beautiful man really did need my help? What if my refusal meant not only that his safety hung in the balance, but that of the entire country? So I drove him to Heathrow Airport, and my adventure began…

Excerpt

“Happy now?” I complain, while steering the car through the tight zig-zagging roads, heading for the other side of the housing estate. “Heathrow it is. What terminal?”

“Uhh...”

“Don’t tell me you don’t know? Do you have any idea how huge Heathrow is?” I exclaim.

“Give me a moment.”

I turn to find the stranger looking at a phone-type device, just fatter, like a handheld satnav thing for hikers. My ex had something similar he took on treks.

“Four. Terminal 4.”

“Great.” I put my foot down as I join the A30, all the while keeping an eye on my speedo which is close to touching fifty miles an hour. “How much time do we have?”

“Not much. Do your best,” he says, while giving me a quick pat on the shoulder. I don’t know whether it’s the adrenaline coursing through my body, or the fact that actually he’s pretty hot for a crazy person, but his touch has an instant effect on me. I must be losing my mind to let this guy affect me at all.

“Fine. But if I get a ticket, I’m telling them you drove. I’ve got six points on my licence already and the insurance company will have me over a barrel if I get more,” I ramble, my voice trembling slightly.

He lets out a chuckle and pats my shoulder again. “Deal. Now go.”

He was right, once I put my mind to it, our progress towards Heathrow has greatly improved. I know these roads like the back of my hand, even if I still compulsively slow down at the speed camera leading up to the Terminal 4 ramp. I’m in this now, whether I want to be or not, but still I’m not willing to blatantly speed through a speed trap.

“We’ll reach it soon, then what? Do I park up, or what?”

I check my mirror, seeing that he’s sitting upright now, staring out the rear window.

“Actually, let me out just there.” He points at the mini roundabout ahead of us. “The cargo is headed for flight SV118 departing for Riyadh at eighteen-fifty. I’m going to try and intercept it. Pull over.”

I slam on the brakes and turn to face him properly. His face is tense yet determined, as he gazes ahead through the metal fence surrounding the cargo area ahead of us.
