Release Blitz ~ Charity For Nothing, The Virtues #3, by AJ Downey

Charity is home free: her degree under her belt and making a beeline, straight for sunny Ft. Royal, and her sisters, Hope and Faith. Excited to see them, yet having been warned by Hope to watch herself when it came to the disarmingly charming ways of The Kraken, Charity never expected to walk right into the one man to flip all of her switches to the ‘on’ position before she’d even taken a dozen steps into town.

Nothing was everything she liked. Tall, handsome, with a pair of eyes that any woman should swoon over. Just the right mix of tortured bad boy to pique all of her healer’s instincts. Charity knew that the men of The Kraken played for keeps; all except, it seemed, for this one. Too bad no one told The Kraken that she played for keeps, too.

Shit. Charity dropped onto the barstool beside mine and dropped her keys on the scarred wood surface of The Plank’s bar. She raised an eyebrow at me.

“What?” I asked.

“It’s raining again, figured I could offer you a ride home, seeing as your bike is in the shop and Marlin has your car.”

“I’m good,” I said and downed the shot of Crown in front of me. Lightning took the shot glass off the bar and sighed.

“You’re done, Bro. I ain’t going to watch you do this to yourself all over again.”

Fuck.

“Let me take you home?” she asked gently. I shook my head and ran a hand over my hair.

“I’m not ready to go home.”

“Okay, fine. Then I’ll sit right here until you are.”

“Fuck, really? Go find someone else to take care of,” she flinched at my tone but I didn’t apologize or back down. I was bad news, she didn’t need any of what I had to offer. She was a nice girl… Corrine had been a nice girl, too. Corrine and I had made the sweetest little girl together… Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck.

“It’s the time of year, Honey. It’s not you,” Hossler said at my elbow.

“Fuck, Hoss, stay out of it!”

“You’re drunk and acting like an asshole; Charity’s a guest. Take your sorry ass home, Nothing. People are sick of your fucking pity party for one.”

I stood up abruptly and staggered, definitely unsteady on my feet. Charity reached out and put a hand on my arm but I jerked away from her.

“Just fucking stay out of it, all of you!” I barked and headed for the door.

I saw Radar get up out of the corner of my eye and I didn’t want to deal with him, or anyone, so before he could get to me I went out the door and into the pouring rain outside. He caught up to me, grabbed my elbow and I was in the mood to force the issue. I turned and raised my fist but was cold cocked by Charity’s glacial stare before I could swing.

“The fuck?” I asked.

“I could ask you the same thing, except I’m done asking. Get your ass in the Jeep.”

I blinked and opened my mouth to reject the notion but before I could, she was speaking again, tone full of consternation.

“You can either, get your ass in the Jeep and let me drive you home, or I can tell your leader how you almost cold cocked his woman’s sister in the face.” She arched a light brow, her face set in stone and I shut my gob and looked this way and that, striking out in the direction of her white Jeep Wrangler.

Blurb

Ronan

I fell in love with a lie …
She was beauty and destruction.
Kissing her was a tender song.
Fucking her, a wild poem.
Loving her, my downfall.
But she was mine.
Or so I thought.

Lawrence

I told her I wanted her body
and not her love.
I lied.

Blaire

One man offered me his love.
The other, the world.
I'm falling, falling, falling …
And there's no end in sight.

Excerpt

He watches me closely. His gaze, sparkling with lust, roves over my figure.

“Like what you see?” I tease.

“Not sure. Why don’t you come a little closer so I can take a better look?”

“Oh yeah?” I get on the bed and crawl toward him, taking my time as I close the space between us. I straddle his lap, rocking my pussy on his cock. “Well, what’s the verdict?”

“Let’s see …” he grabs me by the hips, his long fingers gripping my ass firmly, and pulls me forward until I’m kneeling over his face. I reach for the headboard for support and look down as my breathing accelerates.

“Perfect,” he says, his voice as thick as smoke. Smiling sinfully, his eyes are on me when his fingers spread my folds apart and his thumb begins to rub me in small circles. “Fucking perfect.”

He plays my body like a damn maestro. I bite down hard on my lower lip the moment he drags his tongue along my soaked pussy. He breathes me in, his hot breath caressing my thighs as his hands move me against his eager mouth.

“And so damn sweet.”

I was too warm and my mouth had a funny metallic taste in it. I was comfortable though, and I didn’t want to get up. Still, my bladder demanded I move, and eventually it won. It always did.

I sucked in a deep breath to chase back the cobwebs and opened my eyes. I nearly crossed them to see what it was crammed and blurry in my field of vision, all pink, white, and yellow.

I backed my head up on the pillow and frowned. A pink iPod with white headphones coiled neatly next to it, a creamy yellow mini post-it note clinging to the controls.

Play me, Faith was written in a spidery scrawl on the post-it in black ink. The writing unfamiliar to me. I sat up on the bed and looked around the darkened bedroom. No one was there, nothing stirred… I felt my forehead crush down in a frown.

I looked around the room again, just to be sure, before I plucked the headphones off the smooth cotton pillowcase. I spent far longer than was necessary uncoiling them and tucking them into my ears before I plugged them into the little player. I read and reread the note before plucking it from the front of the little clip and touching the little triangle button to make the thing play.

My breath caught, and stilled completely as the first leading strains of Hope Never Dies spilled from the earbuds. The person playing the guitar was masterful, the notes solemn and quiet, building and subsequently building me up, surrounding me, tucking around me like an old and familiar blanket, or really, bandaging some of the broken bits of me. Holding me together again, just enough to allow me to mend.

Marlin. It had to be. No one else knew what this song did to me, for me, in those darkened nights of desolation and ruin. I stared out of the floor to ceiling obsidian glass, at the faint glimmer of silver as the water lapped upon the shore and let the music soothe me some more. My nap had done me some good, calming some of the disquiet of earlier, and I was glad for it. I let my fingertips idly play with the band of leather and metal around my wrist and thought about what the boy said to me back in the rank dark of that awful storage unit.

There are still good people out there, Faith. You gotta believe me…
