I met a boy once.

He made my heart go into a frenzy every time he looked at me, and my knees go weak whenever he touched me. Our love was so beautiful that even its demise was bittersweet.

I met a girl once.

Her world, full of possibilities, made me feel like even I had a chance at being someone. She believed in me. She loved me. We were so secure, that even our breaking point seemed hazy.

Until we reached it.

**This novella is part of the Kaleidoscope Hearts Series, and is meant to be read in between Kaleidoscope Hearts and Paper Hearts (which releases September 10, 2015).**

I met my true love when I was twenty-seven. He was handsome, charming, witty, and irresistible. Jayden Monroe came along when I was struggling with indecision and made things simple, turned monochrome into vivid color, and forever altered my perspective on life.

I was not naive enough to believe in happily ever after, but with Jayden, it seemed possible . . . until I realized something wasn’t quite right.

You see, I met a man who would be anyone I needed him to be, and after I found out that fact, I knew it would be impossible to walk away. His disorder, however, would change everything I ever thought about love and what it truly meant to accept someone for who they are.

This is not my sob story; this is his success story

Excerpt

“Jayden,” I said in warning.

“Okay.” He let out a long breath. “It’s like a tidal wave that’s impossible to stop. I just get sad and a little scared. It’s not clinical, but it’s rough. I feel like everything’s wrong. Nothing will get better. You know, hopeless.” I nodded as I felt the discomfort he was feeling from telling me. “It doesn’t happen a lot, once or twice a year, and it doesn’t last long. It’s not even really a symptom of ADHD. I don’t know. I guess my racing brain just gets tired and I shut down. It’s all about the chemicals in my brain. You know what ADHD is, right?”

“I’m beginning to think I don’t,” I said honestly. “I started to look it up the other night and then your mom called.”

“My mom called?”

“Yes, we are going to a barbeque Saturday.”

“No shit,” he said, smiling.

Jayden picked up a sponge from the side of the tub and poured some liquid soap on it to suds it up then began rubbing my leg with it. “She’s going to love you, Hilary.”

“Oh yeah, how do you know that?”

“I know her.” He grinned.

Jayden’s sponge drifted over my stomach as he crept closer to me. Still working his sponge, he managed to lift me by my arms, pulling me into his seated lap. I felt his growing hardness as I wrapped my legs around him. His muscled arms firmly around me, he used the sponge on my back as he stared into my eyes. “I missed you.”

“You didn’t have to,” I protested, looking away. I didn’t want to cry again. I didn’t want him to think of me as weak. I wanted him to be able to trust that I could handle it.

“Look at me,” he ordered gently, gripping me tighter as he continued to bathe me. “I wasn’t there.”

I nodded. “I’ll live. I . . . You didn’t tell me about that part.”

“Do you have any idea how hard it is to explain to the person you are falling for that they might not want to reciprocate your affection because you may on occasion have an uncontrollable, explosive temper tantrum? Or that you may pop off with inappropriate comments at any point in time that could alienate them? Oh, and don’t forget the controlling, OCD tendencies with a small, short-lived side of anxiety and depression. Or better yet, how to explain you weren’t listening to something important they were trying to convey because you were too busy figuring out the difference between jelly and jam.”

“Just like that,” I answered, knowing it wasn’t that simple.

Excerpt

We slipped through the spaces between the logs like we had done so many times so many years ago. It was harder than what I remembered, but still not difficult. Once I took in the sight in front of me, I gasped, trying to catch my breath.

The sand was gone. The random pine trees from before had multiplied and filled in the entire area with more pine trees. The ground was covered in pine needles and pods. It was as though our secret place had never existed and it filled me with sadness.

Once I took everything in, I turned to him, silently asking for answers.

He didn’t answer me; instead, he walked further between the trees. He stopped a little ways in and looked around. “We carved our names into a tree one time,” he started without looking at me. “We laid out a blanket somewhere over there, next to our tree, and we gave ourselves to each other for the first time. This was our place. I came here once after you left; I guess I needed to feel a connection to you. I needed to feel the sense of security this place used to bring me. So I came here, looking for peace. Instead, I found this. It was like God was trying to tell me something.

“We see things in our heads, making them what we want them to be. We see the perfectness of the past and avoid looking at the messiness of the present. I came here, expecting to find it exactly how it was when we were young and happy with a bright future ahead of us. That’s not what I found. I found land that has been overgrown with trees, making it impossible to find the single tree with our names carved in it. Just like in my head, you were perfect. But when I went searching for you in my memories, all I found was a shell of the woman I had fallen in love with, making it difficult to see the place in your heart where I had carved my name.” His words were so full of pain and despair as they echoed around me.

I reached out to touch his arm but he pulled away, looking right into my eyes.

“You destroyed me, Edie. You’re still destroying me.”

What the hell was I supposed to say to that? “What do you want me to do?” I asked in a pleading voice, needing him to tell me, direct me. I didn’t have answers or any clue as to what I needed to do. I just knew I wanted to make things right.

“I want you to have never left me.” His voice was broken, sounding the way one does just before breaking down into tears. It made my eyes flood with warm saltwater. I blinked them away as he cleared his throat and looked to the sky. “I want you to have talked to me instead of running. But you can’t change that now. Now…there’s nothing for you to do.”

“If you want me to leave—”

“NO!” he yelled, interrupting me. “I don’t want you to leave. Don’t you get it? I never wanted you to leave. I never wanted to live my life without you in it. I still don’t want to live without you, but I can’t live with you. I’m stuck in this endless space of purgatory because of you. I’m unhappy either way. You can’t make that right. You can’t make it go away.”

“Why did you bring me here?” My question came out in a whisper, barely heard above the rustling of the trees around us. His pain cut through me like a knife, killing anything left alive inside of me, and I wished for something that I could do to take it all away. This was the man I loved with my whole entire being. I had never loved anyone else. He was it for me.

He shook his head as if he needed to clear his mind before answering. “Because I need you to see that it’s over. Until you realize it, I can’t move on. You’re holding on to me, keeping me in this dark place. I can’t go back. I can’t give you what you want, but I can’t move forward, either. I’m physically stuck here until you let me go. That’s what I need from you, Edie. I need you to let me go.”

Review

Sweet Baby Jesus Lola!! What an explosive ending to a tantalizing story!

Part Three picks us a couple of days after the end of Part Two. Poor, poor Juliet is wallowing in sorrow. Now that everything is out in the open about how they meet, Dom wants nothing to do with her, and it's killing her. He's come to mean so much to her and being without him is not something she wishes to do. She has to do something to get him to talk to her, but she's coming up empty. That is until a very unlikely supporter shows up at her front door. She's offered a job, a raise, and a chance at getting Dom to talk to her. Even if he doesn't want to try again with their relationship, she as try at least try to explain what happened.

Of course Dom isn't an easy man to approach, and his harsh words cut her deep. However, Juliet is a strong individual that will not stop until he listens and then she'll walk away.

But life has a way at making you see what your heart wants, even if your brain doesn't want to believe it. But has too time and too many harsh words past between them to bridge the rift? Or can they work through the pain to achieve true happiness?

The series really surprised me. Just when I think I know what's going to happen, it changes course. Juliet is the girl next door you want to hang out with and maybe get a couple, or several, drinks with. She is strong, intelligent, sexy but in a cocky way, talented, caring and down to Earth. She is defiantly someone that is easy to fall in love with. Dominic is a walking sexy dream to say the least. However, he's also smart, independent, loyal and a bit stubborn. Dom knows what he wants and goes for it at all costs. Once he believes in something, there is no stopping him.

The passion that flows between the two is on fire! Everyone around them feels it, including the reader. One small touch from Dom is never enough and once he's finished with you, you'll need a very cold shower!

Well done Ms. Lola Darling. This was a brilliant debut and I look forward to what you'll bring us in the future!
