He’s infuriating on purpose.
She’s too irresistible when she hates him.

~

The first step in solving a problem is recognizing there’s one to begin with. Here’s mine. My new roommate is a conceited, womanizing jerk. He pushes my buttons and drives me so crazy I want to strangle him daily.

There’s a million reasons why I should stay far away from him, the most obvious of which being that I hate him with the fire of a thousand suns.

Except that I don’t hate him.

I sometimes wonder if this back-and-forth between us is all just pretend. All part of a diversion, a line of defense against the heat we generate whenever we are near each other.

It's a reckless game we're playing, treading the edge of an attraction so intense it might as well be a grenade.

Julia

I walk over to the rack of cue sticks and grab one, testing it out in my hand. It's been a while since I've played pool. After grabbing a second stick, I turn to hand it to Giles and the sight of him sitting on the edge of the pool table, watching me, catches me off guard.

He's still shirtless, wearing a pair of red swim trunks that fit him too well. I'm used to seeing him this way. He’s always shirtless around the house. I've pretty much memorized every inch of his upper body. It's hard not to, when he's all compact and lean muscles under smooth skin.

I know he can't see himself. I know he didn't plan for the room's lighting to hit him in just the right way, casting shadows in the hollows of his shoulders, biceps, and abs, accentuating his build. He's set in a spotlight of sorts, which allows glints of the copper tones in his hair to make his eyes glow as if they're lit from within.

Damn it.

I stare for too long, but he pretends not to notice and reaches for the second cue stick in my hand.

"Ladies first." He gestures to the table behind him.

I pass him and, reaching the pool table, I rest my forearms on the edge of it. With careful aim, I lunge my cue stick forward and send the cue ball crashing through, balls scurrying in all directions, three finding their pockets.

"Impressive," he says, from somewhere behind me, though I could've sworn he was off to my left just seconds earlier. "You landed two solids. Looks like I'm stripes."

I move around to find my next target and as I lean forward to make a strike, a hand lays on the table, centimeters from my waist. The surprise makes me miss my shot, and though I hit the cue ball, it jerks forward only an inch or two.

My skin prickles with awareness as I turn to face Giles. He's standing right there, face barely six inches from mine. So close I swear he's about to kiss me. My breath gets trapped in my chest and I'm not sure if I'd stop him.

"Can I tell you something without you getting offended?" he asks, voice just loud enough to reach me.

I nod, unsure how he could say anything that could offend me when he's standing so close with that look in his eyes.

His gaze moves down my face, to the space between us, to my body, and I hope he doesn't notice I'm breathing just a little harder than before.

"You have the most beautiful body I've ever seen."

He looks and sounds so genuine that I couldn't make a joke if I wanted to. Lost for words, I bring my lower lip in between my teeth. And now he's looking right at my mouth.

My head spins. The air is just so thick all of a sudden and my thoughts are too fast and too slow at the same time.

"Thanks," I say, looking down at the way his arm stretches out beside me, his grip closing over the edge of the table. If he set his other arm the same way, I'd be trapped between them.

And I realize I'd like that, a lot.

But he doesn't cage me in. Instead, he brings his hand up to my face and runs a finger over the edge of my forehead, collecting my hair and tucking it behind my ear. He’s never touched me before. His fingertips grazing my face make my heartbeat go off rhythm.

"I came here for a reason," he says under his breath, almost to himself, "and now I can't remember what that reason was."

I feel the same way. My cue stick is still in my hand, the only reminder we came here to play pool, but suddenly the thought of that game isn't as enticing as standing here so close to him. His hand lowers from my face to my arm, caressing my skin along the way, triggering trickles of sensations that spread across me. His touch is foreign and yet strangely familiar, as though my body has imagined this moment even while my mind has refused to consider it.

"I get the weird feeling you're hiding your body," he says. "That you don't feel comfortable in your skin but…"

"But what?"

He shakes his head. "But I've seen your body, Julia. And I swear, I can't stop thinking about how it'd feel under mine."

Oh my God.

Did he just say that? The room warms ten degrees in an instant.

"Giles…"

What do I even want to say?

Stop talking. Keep going. Touch me.

My thoughts are turning me in a dozen directions, making it hard for me to know for sure what to say, what to do. My eyes are on his lips, despite not wanting him to spy just how badly his touch and proximity affect me.

"I keep wondering if the curiosity is mutual," he says, hopeful.

"I can't say I haven't thought about it," I hear myself respond in a voice I barely recognize.

I've never seen this look in his eyes. It's like he's been pulled under a spell, lids lowering, words slow. His hand comes up again and he brushes his thumb over my bottom lip, pulling it slightly down. I let him.

Desire, hot and thick, spreads wider across his face with each passing second.

"And this mouth? I think about it a lot, too. What it would taste like…what it would feel like..."

My lips part farther as I exhale in surprise.

Is this happening? I wait for the inkling to pull away from him, to stop this before it goes further. But no part of me wants this to stop. The heaviness between my legs makes every other thought in my mind seem so small and trivial. And Giles? I bet he's anything but.

Giles

I eat slowly, my ears focusing on any noises coming from down the hall.

Julia's door creaks open. Past the frame of the archway, I catch sight of her as she walks into her bathroom with a towel in hand. Her hair's in disarray and she's dressed in her typical morning attire, a t-shirt and tiny, wrinkled pajama shorts.

She disappears behind the door with an unmistakable sound of a lock clicking into place. The shower cuts on and I enjoy images of her naked body in my mind's eye as I eat my breakfast. The grogginess of sleep lifts as I wait, replaced by the energy of anticipation. It takes a while, but when the sounds of water running cut off, I stop eating and look up.

A squeak of the curtain moving against the rod. Silence follows for a few minutes as I wait, patiently. Finally, a shrill scream rips through the house.

Julia barges out of the bathroom, footsteps trampling the wooden floors. First, she storms past the kitchen entrance, apparently headed to my room, before doubling back when she realizes where I’m sitting. She's got one arm wrapped around her chest, securing the towel wrapped around her. In her other hand, she's clutching her deodorant, holding it up in the air between us. For a moment, she just stares at me, face flushed, looking too angry to speak.

"What did you do to my deodorant?" she demands, in a low, controlled voice.

She's holding her left arm up at a weird angle, trying to keep it from rubbing on her sides. Even from a distance, it would be clear that the thick white substance smeared there isn't deodorant.

"Huh?" I fix an innocent expression on my face, aware of the spoon of cereal halfway to my mouth.

She brings the bottle up to her nose and takes in a whiff of the disfigured stick of white. "Is this…oh my God. Is this cream cheese?"

I pull my head back. "That's disgusting, Julia," I say. "Why are you using dairy as deodorant?"

Her mouth presses into a tight line and she takes in a deep breath that hollows out the base of her throat. There are beams flying out of her eyes and not knowing what she's going to do next sends a thrill through me.

She points the deodorant at me like it's a weapon, and I think for a second she's going to hurl it in my direction. I prepare to dodge a blow, but instead, she says, with eerie calmness, "Two can play at this game, Giles. Consider this war."

She still doesn't realize she started this, a prank war with a prank war master.

I hold up the confused, innocent facade until she turns around again and storms back toward the bathroom. Then a smirk tugs at my lips.

If she really wants me to quit messing with her, she should stop being so damn hot when she's angry.

Turns out I’ve been faking being an adult. My job? My apartment? The pretty life I've built? Let's just say I've made some mistakes. I'm knee-deep in the mess I've made when I find him. Tall, dark-haired, and rough around the edges. The boy I never noticed is all grown up, in all the right ways. And he's not about to let me forget it. He can try to pretend he's immune to our attraction. I'm trained in the art of persuasion and I love a challenge. But how can he know the answers to questions I haven't thought to ask? I’ve been putting out fires, fighting like crazy to get my life back on track. And this man? He acts like he knows who's holding the match. Maybe there's no such thing as mistakes. What if it's all just sabotage?

EXCERPT

A moan parts my lips as his fingers discover how badly I want him. I tilt my head back as he rubs me. The electric storm between my legs makes it impossible to think of anything but his touch. My skin is on fire and his hands are relentless and unafraid, rough as coal and fueling my heat into a full-blown flame. I'm hurting for him to be inside of me.

Eyes shut, I have no idea what he intends to do next until his lips find mine below. I groan out. Loud. He savors me slowly at first. But his tastes turn to nipping, and then he devours me with increasing vigor. Out of nowhere, he gives my clit one sudden, sharp suck.

"Oh God," I breathe out. My back arches upward, pulled by the firing nerves running up and down my core.

Reality blurs away, intoxicating lust pulls a veil over all of my other senses. All I know is his lips on me. I'm clutching the edge of the counter and twisting my hips any way I can to grind against his face and show him with my movements how incredibly good he's making me feel. Owen's waging an assault on my body, concentrating all his forces on the one small spot where the war is won.

I've never been tasted like this before. This man knows what he's doing. He knows how much pressure to put where, he knows how to weave over all the sensitive spots. When to be rough, when to pull back. He puts his whole damn head into it.

It's like he knows exactly what I'm itching for before I even decide, scratching the perfect place every single time. His tongue massages my most sensitive spot long enough to put me on edge and then tortuously moves to another itch.

He's a fucking professional, bringing me to the brink of orgasm three or four times and somehow, defiantly, keeps me right there until I'm begging in a desperate whisper for him to make me come. He slides a finger inside of me, all the while tasting me, and lets out a groan as I squeeze around it. His finger pulses in and out of me to the rhythm of my uneven heartbeat. One of my legs hooks over his shoulder, pulling his face further into me. He must know, somehow, how close I am, because he lightly drags his teeth against me. My eyes fly open as the sting of pain twists instantly to insane ecstasy that plunges me into an explosive orgasm. I'm sure my spine dissolved and my body is left boneless.

I laugh. That felt so damn good I don't know what else to do but laugh.

"Does that mean you want more?" Owen asks. The look in his eyes tells me he's still starving. And I'm on the menu.

"I'll give you more."

Review

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I picked this book up, but what I got was very seductive.

Emily has just been fired and about to be homeless and now she's not sure what to do except going to her sister's home, her hometown, for a breather. While there she makes a trip a place that brought her solace while in school. As she sat walked in, a man caught her attention. Something about him drew her to him. He was a stranger yet something about him was familiar. Owen is stand offish towards her due to something that happened years prior are her supposed behest.

Owen's always had a thing for Emily and when she walked into the diner, it took him by surprise. He may be wonder why she's there and although he puts up a hard demeanor, he's just as drawn to her today as he was all those years ago.

The more time they share together, the more deeply he falls for her. Emily is falling for him as well, but she's waiting for the other shoe to fall; there are some deep seated issues she's unwilling to come to grips with.

But when her demons threaten her and those around her, Emily is forced to face all her issues. But is it a little too late for her relationship with Owen? Only time will tell.

I loved this story. It had depth, passion, tension, angst, sensuality and self discovery. It wasn't about the hot, steamy sex (although there was some very sizzling moments), the underlying story was about Emily coming into her own. Learning that she is worth the happiness. Grabbing life by both hands is better than always worrying that something is going to go horribly wrong. A great message within an amazing story.
