Two months, she repeated to herself. Sixty days.

A lot could happen in sixty days. On The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, entire relationships were formed and proposals handed out in that amount of time. Surely Hannah could rewrite history and change how Deacon saw her, right?

Yes, she’d royally botched things up in her bedroom, flaunting panties and talking about sex like some sort of nutcase. She’d been flustered and unprepared, and as a result, she’d probably come on too strong—but next time she’d think quicker on her feet.

Even better, despite yesterday’s crash and burn, there had been a moment…a brief handful of seconds when they’d both been sitting on the bed…where she could’ve sworn the air between them had shifted.

True, she’d thought that once before—the night that had sent her fleeing to Paris in embarrassment—and she’d been wrong. But that was before she’d truly put herself out there. She’d barely attempted to flirt (and those attempts had sucked), then skipped town at the first sign of failure, without even telling Deacon how she felt.

In hindsight, she wouldn’t have been surprised if she’d smelled like spit-up. Back then she’d spent half her time covered in formula or baby food from her daycare job, and never once had she worn makeup or even tried to look feminine. Could she blame him for not seeing her as a woman ready and worthy of his love?

Now things were different. Thanks to a suitcase filled with silken bravery and a year’s worth of Cosmo inspiration, Hannah felt confident and courageous. Or as close as she’d ever get, anyway. Armed with her new life’s mission, she was ready to tackle whatever setbacks came her way, and this time, she wasn’t conceding defeat until Deacon saw her as the woman she was and asked her to the dance.

Two months to make Deacon fall madly in love with her?

Hannah blew out a shaky breath. “Piece of cake.”

Jack ran his hands down his face, trying to look calm and collected, even though his world had just been turned upside down. He didn’t want Lily to see him as anything other than put together, though. Sure, her being pregnant upped his timeline, but it wasn’t bad news. He’d always wanted kids with her. Of course, having her on speaking terms with him would have made things a little simpler.

“I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out how this could happen. I have the distinct memory of you putting on a condom.” He had to interrupt, grinning. “You remember that moment?”

Clearly this was not a remark she appreciated, because she let out some kind of squeal and her arms flailed again. “No, no that moment is not what I’m remembering. I’m remembering the one where you told me you hadn’t slept with anyone else in five years.” “That’s true.”

“But you had a condom in your wallet.” He nodded, feeling like he was on the witness-stand. “Did you replace this condom on a regular basis in case you got lucky?”

She was speaking really slowly now, as if she might explode at some point soon if he didn’t give her an answer she liked. He held up a hand.

“Let’s be clear about something. I have no issues finding willing partners. I chose not to sleep with anyone else because I knew I would be coming back to you.”

Her eyes softened for a second then turned to steel. “And what, I was just sitting here waiting for you to get your crap together? How was I supposed to know that the almighty Jack would be back and think he could pick up where he left off? What kind of self-absorbed, conceited thinking is that?” This wasn’t going well at all. “Fine. But it was the truth.”

“Okay, you know what, you’re making me lose my train of thought. Back to the condom. So, that condom was not replaced with a new one every now and then. So basically, what you are telling me is…”

She took a deep breath and he waited for the bomb to drop. He may have been sweating slightly. “You used a five-year-old condom!”

He swallowed hard. “I’m sure it was still fine.”

“No, or I wouldn’t be pregnant, Jack!”

His gaze was everywhere, almost as though he were touching her. Then it lingered on her breasts for a heated second before traveling up to her eyes. His face was clenched, and had this been any other man than the one that had broken her heart, she would have jumped him, because no man had ever looked at her like that or evoked such an immediate, physical want in her. So instead she did what any self-saving, smart woman would do. She reached for Mrs. Jacobs’s purple and pineapple printed raincoat and enveloped herself in it.

“Oh God, it’s like straight out of a nightmare,” Aiden said. He even took a step back.

She breathed an inward sigh of relief. At least that problem was solved. She backed up a little bit. She noticed he still had the stubble thing going on. And he wasn’t wearing a jacket today, even though it looked like rain. He was wearing faded, worn-in jeans that seemed to be made to hug and emphasize all his good parts, which happened to be everything. Then there was the T-shirt he was wearing that emphasized how much he’d filled out in the years since he’d been gone. Except the stomach, that was flat and…her eyes snapped up to his. Stay on track. “Yes? You needed to see me about something?”

Aiden gave his head a shake. “I can’t think with that thing on you.”

She hugged it tighter and backed up another step. Before she knew it she was standing in one of the changing rooms.

“It’s not up to you to like what I wear.”

“That’s not yours.”

She shrugged.

“You’re wearing it because you don’t like me looking at you.”

She rolled her eyes. “As if. You looking at me is as boring as…a horse on a farm glancing over at me.”

His lips twitched, and she observed a dimple appearance. The glint in his eyes unfortunately didn’t match the tone of the dimple, and he took two large steps forward so that he was now in the doorway. “You’re lying,” he said with another dimple flash.

She lifted her chin and looked him square in the eye, even though her pulse was racing and, dear God, she could smell him, and he smelled so good. Like man and Aiden and old Aiden and…

“What are you thinking about?”

She waved a hand in front of her face. “Nothing. I was thinking that I don’t know why you’re trying to prove I’m a liar.”

“I have my reasons. So back to what we were talking about.”

“I can’t remember.”

“You don’t like me looking at you.”

“You’re wrong. You looking at me is just the same as…Mrs. Jacobs looking at me.”

She had always been a bad liar. Judging by his sexy, you’re-such-a-liar smile, he thought so, too. He braced his arms on either side of the doorway. His shirt lifted, and she caught a glimpse of hard abs. Omigod, she was going to cry.

“Somehow I don’t think Mrs. Jacobs looks at you the way I do.”
