Excerpt

They faced each other on the bed. Her nails scraped over his chest, thick with muscle and a matting of dark hair. His powerful neck and biceps tensed when she touched those areas. She raked her nails through his thick, wavy hair, kissed and sucked along his neck and shoulders, rubbed her hands over the broad slope of his back down to his tight butt. With ravenous hands and mouths, they explored what their eyes couldn’t see. Hard abs rippled under her fingers, but he froze to marble when she slid her fingers around his long, thrusting shaft.

He rolled over her, kissing and rubbing against her with his big hands and long body. His mouth, a hot cavern of desire, trailed a fiery path at her neck, shoulders, and finally closed over a nipple already peaked from his questing attentions. Moisture built between her legs. His deft fingers found her heat. When he slid between her legs, she felt the hard tip of his shaft at her entrance and panicked. Pushing back toward the headboard, she pressed her palms against his chest. “Wait. Stop. Please, wait.”

Brian froze at her command. His muscled arms pulsed like overstrained ripcord under her fingers. This was madness. They’d lost control, and she had no one to blame but herself. They’d taken things too fast and too far. This isn’t how she wanted her first joining to happen.

“Angel?” He pushed her shoulders against the pillows and rose above her while disentangling their lower bodies. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. Angel listen to me, lass.”

When he fully rolled away from her, goose bumps coursed over her body from the loss of his heat. Frustrated and confused by the powerful pull of his body, his hands, his heat, she buried her face in her hands.

“You’re right, lass.” His words came in short pants. “We must stop and take a breath—consider our actions.”

About Aleigha Siron

My San Francisco Highlander is Aleigha’s second full-length romance novel in her Finding My Highland Series. Now, an Amazon best-selling author of Time-Travel romance, she is working on the third book in her Finding My Highlander Series as well as a collection of romance poems. She’s also working on early character sheets for a Regency Romance series.

After more than twenty-five years writing and delivering management and other training programs, Aleigha Siron turned her writing efforts to fiction and poetry. When not writing, you’ll often find Aleigha walking along the shore with her trusty four-legged companion, Strider. The whoosh of waves across glistening sand and the turbulent swell of the sea at sunset dissolves the noise of the day. If this fails to conjure the muses and stimulate her creative juices, she’ll sip a glass of wine and read.

Aleigha loves all forms of writing, but historical and romance fiction provide a favorite escape, especially those with time-travel themes. A firm believer that everyone secretly yearns for the romance novels’ essential HEA, she knew this was her genre.

It's All About the Duke

He could be a rake if he means only to steal a kiss but steals your heart as well.

Nearing thirty, the Duke of Rathburne is finally ready to make amends for the wager that caused him and his best friends such scandal, but taking on a ward who needs a husband is a feat he’s not sure he can manage. The last he saw of Miss Marlena Fast, she was a spirited little ruffian, not the sort of bride most bachelors on the marriage mart sought. But one glance at the lovely lady she has become is enough to convince him otherwise…

Orphaned young and shuffled from family to family, Marlena counts on her fierce independence and quick wits to keep herself content. Being the responsibility of a notoriously wicked duke who upended so many lives is an unexpected challenge when she realizes he arouses her decidedly feminine desire. Marlena must be careful. She has her own scandalous secret to protect. If he finds out, will it shatter her chances of a happily-ever-after with the notorious rake?

Excerpt

The duke lowered his head toward her upturned face.  “I’m pleased about that.  Mr. Olingworth is true gentlemen as was my father.  I am not.  I want to kiss you.  I don’t mind telling you I do, and I think you want me to.”

She did.  Oh, yes she did.

But she couldn’t.  He couldn’t.

“You can’t kiss me,” she managed to whisper.

“I know,” he said, though his face kept coming closer to hers. “I’m not going to, but you can kiss me.”

The scent of a windswept shores and rugged cliffs filled the air around her, making her feel languid and dreamy.  Her breaths became deep and heavy with wanting what he was promising.

Her desire to feel his lips on hers was great.

So maybe she could kiss him.  Not a long kiss, of course.  Just a brief touch of her lips upon his.  Just to know what it would feel like.

Just once.

And only to solve the mystery of what a kiss would be like.  She could consider it a learning experience that she very much wanted.  She’d been taught to dance, ride a horse, and manage a household.  Shouldn’t she be familiar with a kiss as well?

Marlena’s lashes lowered over her eyes.  She felt herself rising up on her toes to meet him.  His breath lightly caressed her lips.  She knew she was only brief second or two away from receiving her first kiss and it was a heady feeling.

She splayed her hand on the desk behind her to steady herself.  Her palm landed on a piece of linen.  She caught it up in her grasp and quickly shoved it between her face and the duke’s.

“I have your handkerchief,” she said breathlessly.

The duke slowly straightened again.  He blew out a soft laugh and nodded.  “So you do.”

Marlena didn’t know if she was relieved or if she would be forever regretful that she spoiled her chance for her first kiss.

Excerpt

The day was warm and bright, and she was looking forward to being outside. The door she’d come through suddenly burst open. Beau dashed out, his laughter immediately filling the courtyard.

He was quickly followed by Rufus, who chased him along the edge of the garden to the center path. Beau didn’t slow as he rounded the corner, and his feet slipped on the cobblestones. He fell down, landing on his side.

Verity dropped the blanket and ran toward him, but Rufus beat her by quite a bit. It was then that she realized he hadn’t been using his top speed to chase the boy. She’d seen that when he’d caught Racer that day at Mr. Maynard’s farm.

Rufus picked Beau up and set him on his feet and squatted down in front of him.“All right?”

Verity had expected Beau to cry, and his face had gone slightly pale. She lowered herself next to Rufus.“Did that scare you?” she asked, stroking Beau’s arm from shoulder to elbow and back again.

Beau nodded. Then a moment later, he ran to the top of the stairs leading to the courtyard.“Comeon, Papa, catch me!”

Rufus stood and offered his hand to Verity to help her rise. She wasn’t wearing gloves, and neither was he. It was the first time their flesh had touched, and it was like grabbing lightning. Or how she imagined it to be—electrifying and hot, and it left a lasting impression.

“Please don’t chase him down the stairs. He already fell once.” She turned to Beau and called,“Please be careful.”

“I am being careful, Mama. And don’t worry about the stairs. I ran down them to the kitchen passage and didn’t fall.”

She looked over at Rufus.“Isthat right?”

His gaze drifted to the side, and he hesitated a moment.“Er,yes. We were playing knights and villains.”

“Which one were you?”

“It was my turn to be the knight.”

Verity frowned and shifted a glance toward Beau.“Idon’t like thinking of my boy as a villain.”

“It’s pretend,” Rufus said.“But if it makes you feel better, he only chooses to be the villain because he likes to be chased.”

“Can’t the villain chase the knight?”

His mouth tipped into a crooked smile, and her stomach did a flip. It was as if lightning had struck again.“It’s pretend. We can do whatever we like.” He looked back toward the basket and the blanket on the ground.“I’ll get the things for the picnic.” He turned and started along the path.

“I can grab the blanket,” she offered.

He waved a hand.“I’ve got it.”

Verity went to Beau instead. She took his hand, and they descended into the courtyard, then veered right toward the gateway to the stable yard.“Perhaps I should play knights and villains.” She wondered why they hadn’t done that before and felt bad. It was a stark reminder of how much he’d missed not having a father.

“But you’re a girl.” Beau sounded scandalized.

Rufus met them as they approached the gate.“What’swrong with your mother being a girl?”

“She wants to play knights and villains.” He made a face that clearly showed what he thought of that idea.

Verity was caught between laughter and disappointment.

“It would be better if she joined us,” Rufus said, drawing Beau’s sharp attention.“A knight needs a fair maiden to rescue.”

“Then I am definitely going to be the villain. I don’t wanna rescue a girl.” He frowned, then sent his mother an apologetic glance.“Except I do want to save you, Mama.”

Verity surrendered to the laughter. “Thank you.”

“But Papa should be the one to save you. That’s what dukes do, right?”

“That’s what husbands do,” Rufus corrected,“whether they are a duke or not.”

Marlena felt the duke’s fingers touching her bare skin. She couldn’t have been more surprised, more intrigued, more fully engaged if his lips had actually been on hers instead of his warm touch under her chin. He wasn’t looking at her face but on his task at her throat.

She should have been frightened but it wasn’t fear she felt. It was something else.

Something far more worrisome.

It was attraction.

Inexplicable sensations stirred restlessly inside her. She didn’t know exactly what was happening. He wasn’t choking her, but she couldn’t breathe. He wasn’t hurting her, but she trembled. She wasn’t in pain, yet she had the most intense yearning and urgency inside herself for something she couldn’t describe.

“What are you doing?” she whispered, unable to look up at him.

“Kissing you deeply, madly, and thoroughly,” he mumbled and continued with his undertaking.

“What?” Her gaze flew up to his face.

He smiled down so innocently at her that for a spark of a second she thought he might be serious.

“That’s ridiculous,” she said, reclaiming her good sense. “How can you say something like that? It’s so outrageously untrue. You’re doing no such thing and you know it. You aren’t kissing me. You’re untying the knot in my ribbon which is highly inappropriate.”

He centered his attention on his job at hand again. “If you knew what I was doing then why did you ask?”

She didn’t know. How could she think properly when the duke was this close to her? The tips of his fingers touching her. She had to say something.

“It would not be only you pretending you might be interested in me,” Lord Littleton explained. “I would be seen to be interested in you as well.”

This still seemed unnecessary. Either Lord Harrington would want her for herself or not. She did not like to engage in deceptions. “To what purpose?”

“My dear lady.” Lord Littleton possessed himself of her hands, his gaze capturing hers.

Good Lord, the man was dangerous. She sent a prayer of thanks to the deity that she was not affected by him. “Do you do that on purpose?”

He shook his head and stared at her. “Do what?”

Elizabeth narrowed her eyes at him. “Look into a woman’s eyes as if she were the only lady on earth you wished to be with.”

“Ah, no,” he said a little sheepishly. “It just happens. I can’t seem to stop myself.”

“It’s like this, Lizzy”—her brother cut in—“any gentleman who’s interested in a lady don’t wish to see another man making up to her.” He gave his friend a disgusted look. “Littleton agreed to help, but you can see how dangerous it is for him to be in Town. He truly can’t help himself from flirting, and he’ll soon find himself in a bumble-bath if he remains too long. He’s not ready for a leg-shackle yet, but he’d be bound to raise some lady’s expectations and that won’t do.”

“That’s it exactly.” Lord Littleton must have realized he was still holding Elizabeth’s hands and released them. “But that’s not the only reason Turley and I thought I’d be the best one. You see, Harrington and I never got on well together. That will give him the extra incentive to court you properly.”

“And,” Gavin added, “Littleton is so full of juice that he is just as eligible as Harrington. Other than the title that is.”

Her brother and Lord Littleton focused their gazes on her, and she glanced from one man to the other. “I understand.” Or she thought she did. Men were such strange creatures. She wondered why Lord Harrington did not like Lord Littleton. He seemed amiable enough. “Very well, then. How do we begin?”

Blog Tour ~ Lord of Fortune, Legendary Rogues #3, by Darcy Burke

Lord of Fortune, an all-new historical and romantic standalone from Darcy Burke is live!

Dashing adventurer Penn Bowen is dedicated to preserving Britain’s history and his carefree, bachelor lifestyle. He’s happiest when he’s in pursuit of knowledge and the occasional liaison with the right woman. So he’s more than a little perturbed when the wrong woman inserts herself into his latest quest—proving that a valuable artifact in Oxford’s museum is a fake. Amelia Gardiner is smart and capable...and determined to prove that Penn is wrong about the treasure her grandfather found.

Amelia won’t allow Penn to denigrate her family’s legacy, and she certainly won’t join the ranks of women who throw themselves at his feet. As secretive and dangerous factions infiltrate their hunt, Amelia and Penn must work together to stay one step ahead. But passion ignites between them and suddenly their alliance is more than a simple convenience. When peril strikes too close, they’ll risk everything they hold dear: family, honor, and a chance for the greatest treasure of all—love.

Excerpt

Penn enjoyed watching her animated expression change as she’d relayed the tale. “You’re a romantic.”

Her brow pleated for a moment. “Not particularly.”

He wasn’t sure he believed her, but he’d have to take her word for it since he barely knew her. Though he hoped they were rectifying that.

He did?

Did he hope to know her better? Certainly, if it meant gathering information he needed to find the real heart and dagger. As to that—he needed to convince her to accept his partnership, especially if the Order was involved. “The Order’s primary objective is to keep the Thirteen Treasures—and really anything to do with them—from being found or publicized. They want them to remain a legend.”

“But one of them is in a museum.”

He lifted his right shoulder. “Or not.”

She rolled her eyes and pursed her lips. “Does the Order agree with that assessment?”

“I can’t say for certain—let me be clear: I am not a member. Members are, for the most part, descendants of the knights.”

“How can that be possible if it’s all a legend?”

“The Order wants everyone to think it’s all a legend. I didn’t say they believed that.”

Mr. Tarleton returned with Penn’s breakfast.

After the innkeeper left, Mrs. Forrest shook her head. “That seems ridiculous. What is their reasoning?”

“That the treasures are too powerful, that if they were to be found, they would cause strife and conflict.” He sliced off a piece of ham and brought it to his mouth.

“War?” She stared at him a moment, and her shoulder twitched as if she suppressed a shiver. “My grandfather told me once that he gave the heart to the museum because it was far too valuable to keep. He feared someone would steal it.”

Penn relaxed slightly. Her sharing such a thing with him was progress.

Her brow furrowed once more and stayed that way as she spoke. “What he said in the letter… Was he afraid of this Order? Do I need to be concerned?”

It was the perfect opportunity to bind her to him, to encourage her reliance, but he’d also said he wouldn’t lie. “You do not need to be afraid. Concern, or wariness, is always a good thing. Even if you decide to associate with me.”

She gave him a dark but curious stare. “And what do I need to be wary about with you?”

He didn’t think she meant any sort of innuendo, but his brain took that route automatically. Lout. “I don’t plan to steal anything from you. I merely want to share information so that we may get to the heart—pardon the pun—of the matter.”

She rolled her eyes again, but this time, the edge of her mouth ticked up with humor. He suppressed a smile before taking another bite of ham.

After he swallowed, he said, “I only meant that being guarded will serve you well. That said, you can trust me.”

She let out a short laugh. “One of the first things you said to me was that you didn’t trust me, and now you expect me to trust you?”

He had said that, blast. And he’d meant it. Did he trust her now? Not completely. But then the list of those he trusted completely was quite succinct—his parents and his sister. “How about we give it a try?”

There was something about her… Something he wanted to discover. She, like all women, was a mystery. The difference was that he wanted to investigate this one.
