Prologue

This is a story that bares all. It’s not just about me. It also includes Tristana, Peter, and Nathan. All our lives are entangled in a web of sorrow, deceit, despair, and love. Each strand is woven into a net that trapped all those around us, hurting many, ruining lives. Yet, new friends were made, new families forged.

There is always light in darkness, as there is always darkness where there is light.

I knew Tristana’s story. She did not know mine. Even then, I don’t think I know all of hers. Same could be said for Peter and Nathan. They certainly never knew everything.

This is a story about all the facets that drive human beings: vulnerability, courage, pain, love, hate, despair, family, friends, lovers, an opportunity.

This is a story about survival. About running from the nightmares humans are capable of inflicting on others. About running from the monsters out there who want to harm you, running from the monsters inside that you could become. Running from your past. Living with all the tools ingrained in your DNA. The need to survive, to adapt, to overcome.

This is a story. ~ Seraphina

Author Interview

Welcome Kat Alexander to my little corner of the web today to talk about you and your book! How about we get started...

How did you come up with the idea for your book?

Dares, Lies & Geminis was inspired by the song “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men. It ended up taking on a life of its own when I finally came back to it after not having time to finish the book years ago.

Do you hide any secrets in your books?

There are some Easter eggs to a previous book I published, Looking Back on Forever. Also, there are references to a paranormal series I wrote under another name, The Lunangelique Series by Kristin R. Campbell. Seraphina’s name is a connection to that.

What's the strangest thing you have ever had to research online for your book?

Ooo … I cannot give that answer away. It will give the book away! lol! I will say that I did have to read numerous case studies on multiple individuals to make sure I stayed true to what is happening in Dares, Lies & Geminis. Also, my Criminal Justice degree came to good use in this book.

Do you set a plot or prefer going wherever an idea takes you?

I do outline. However, the characters in Dares, Lies & Geminis decided they didn’t like my outline and rewrote it. When I came back to this book, it was supposed to be about the sex trade and Hollywood. That is far from how this book turned out. Maybe one day characters will come along who have lived that story, but that’s not this book.

What are your top three favorite books of all time?

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas.
Katherine by Anya Seton. Best real-life love story of all time!!!
And … let’s go paranormal and say the Lux Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout because I will reread those books once a year. I can’t get enough of Daemon!

What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?

I struggle with writer’s block A LOT. To get past it, I skip around in my books. If I get stuck on one scene, I keep going, jumping to another scene so I can get my word count in for the day. That’s my advice: move on, keep writing. Don’t sit idle, staring at the same page for hours. Even if you end up taking the scene out of the book, at least you kept going. And, hey, you now have a bonus scene you can feature on your website and/or newsletter.

Speed Round:
Tea or coffee? Coffee, but I love tea, too.
Morning Person or Night Owl? Night Owl.
Cats or Dogs? Dogs. Allergic to cats.
Reality Shows or Scripted Shows? Scripted.
What came first, the chicken or the egg? An egg that mutated into a chicken!

Thank you again Kat for taking the time out of your busy schedule to hang out with us today, I had a blast! Congrats on the release of Dares, Lies & Geminis, it sounds like a very intriguing read.

Release Tour ~ The Belle Jar, Darkholm #2, by Aria Adams

The Belle Jar
Darkholm, #2
by Aria Adams

“Stupid girl,” Coal began, “The only way you can leave is if you surrender your soul to us. The door is a one-way ticket into this hell. And you got left on the doorstep by the villagers. If you try to leave, it saps the life force from everything inside the castle to maintain the magic that binds us here.”

Marea was too afraid to take in everything Coal said, and her eyes were fixed on the wand, with its lightning bolts. She was sure that she didn’t want it anywhere near her.

“Scream all you like, there’s nobody coming to save you,” Coal added, and Marea couldn’t look away as he moved the wand toward her. When he touched her belly, just to one side of her belly button, she shrieked as a white-hot jolt of pure agony burst through her body. It was like the wand distilled pain into its purest, strongest form and channeled it straight into its victim.

Before she got a handle on what was happening, the pain was gone, leaving an echo that lingered where the wand had touched her.

He touched it to her left nipple, and this time the pain seemed to radiate out like a gloved hand ensconcing her breast, then traveling through the rest of her body, until it converged again inside her clit. It burned unstoppably, and Marea screamed. As the pain overwhelmed her, there was nothing she could do.

The wand touched her other nipple, sending out sparks of lightning as it did, and this time, she shook as the searing agony shot through her.

“You never try to leave the castle again,” Coal told her. “Do I make myself clear?”

“Yes.”

“Yes what?”

She stared at him, mind blank, and with no idea what the correct response was. Sir? Master? Lord? As she tried to figure it out, he walked around to where her legs were spread.

“Yes, sir,” he growled, then touched the lightning wand to her unprotected bottom hole. She screeched, then, a high-pitched keen of terror as the pain seemed to fill her entire body, outside and in, and her whole world trembled. Her ass winked and tried to clamp down on something that wasn’t there, and as she shook, a glowing sensation appeared in her pussy.

“Try again. Yes what?”

“Yes, sir!” she squeaked quickly.

“I don’t think you understand how serious this is,” Coal growled, his voice barely intelligible. “Disrespect me again, or try to escape, and I’ll attach this lightning wand to your clit, and I’ll leave you there for hours. Here’s a taste of what that would feel like.”

With icy dread, Marea tried to close her legs but she couldn’t. Instead, she scrunched her eyes up.

The beasts want to destroy her. The mirror-world won't let her stay. The castle hides too many secrets. What's a girl to do? And when Marea finds out how to break the curse, is she willing to do whatever it takes to save two creatures of pure evil, to whom she is nothing?

Marea Belle was doomed at birth. In Darkholm, having red hair means only one thing: Witch.

After her parents are executed in a witch hunt, the only thing that saves Marea is the chastity device that proves her purity. Spared the flames, Marea is dumped in a sack at the doors of a cursed castle; a sacrifice to appease the monsters within.

The denizens of the castle want nothing more than to devour Marea's soul. The huge, terrifying beasts within take her to an underground experiment room and make her their plaything. Somehow, she survives and escapes the monsters, hiding deep within the castle, where she finds a magic mirror which becomes her sanctuary.

Inside the looking glass, she falls in love with two men. But she can only remain there for a few hours at a time before she has to return to the castle and the inevitable horrors within. No-one can escape the castle, and no-one can survive the beasts within. When Marea is forced to give herself to the beasts, she risks losing herself forever, but will her sacrifice be enough to break the ancient curse?

This full-length story is grim and a little complicated. This is a dark fairytale that tiptoes on the boundary between horror and romance. It is disturbing, bleak, and certainly not for the faint-hearted.

Excerpt

Arriving at Heachley Hall.

I shortened the lengths of my strides, ignored the numbing embrace of a premature autumn and allowed my senses the opportunity to coax awake quiescent memories.

Years ago, as a young girl, I’d walked the same path alongside my father and knocked on the front door of Heachley Hall. The gardens boasted pungent roses and mobs of fragrant lavender, songbirds chatted exuberantly to each other and there was the crisp flavour of sea salt in the air. The house itself was a blur of grey stonework and slate with an arched porch framing an impressive door. Beyond, a dark wood. The smattering of recalled images, no different from the jumbled pieces of a jigsaw, brought with them a maelstrom of muddled emotions.

Strange how memories lingered in the form of smell, sound and occasionally taste, but visually, they easily faded into a frustrating void. Nothing else discernible remained in those memory nooks. Somewhere, waiting to be rediscovered, was a clearer picture of that day. And the reason why I’d chosen to forget it.

The garden resembled a meadow. Thistles strangled the wild grasses and verdant moss roamed wild. Once a cultivated lawn, the generous frontage had lost its beauty to the unstoppable – time and the seasons. The gravel path scrunched underfoot, leaves rustled incessantly and a crow announced our arrival with a fanfare of squawks. Approaching the weather-worn door, I smelt the decay of mulched leaves. Of the house, especially its interior, nothing came to mind; it was a vacuum waiting to be filled.

The door’s diminutive size surprised me. Where was the grandiose entrance? I had been much smaller, seven, maybe eight years old, when we’d called upon Great-aunt Felicity. The visits were part of that pervasive nothingness that contained most of my early childhood.

Mr Bridge swung the key ring around his little finger. His car, an urban smart tattooed with the name of the estate agent, was squeezed next to a hawthorn hedge just outside the iron gates. He’d waited for me to arrive before crossing the threshold, as if the weed infested driveway, that cut a crescent shaped path through the lawn, was tainted in some way.

While Mr Bridge fiddled with the stiff lock of the front door, I stuffed my hands in my coat pockets and surveyed the ivy that choked the flintstone walls of the Victorian mansion. A cloak of fog swaddled the house, its tendrils swirled around the window sills, rising like a white creeper to the heights of the pointed gables where it stifled the huddled chimney pots. The poor house was smothered by nature.

He pushed the door ajar. ‘So this is your late aunt’s house, I gather? I’m very sorry for your loss,’ he said with appropriate solemnity.

I smiled sweetly. He wasn’t to know the circumstances. ‘Thank you. Sadly, I only found out about Felicity’s passing a few days ago.’ I acknowledged his sympathetic glance before continuing. ‘She died in February. Mr Porter had problems finding me.’ I’d missed her cremation.

‘Oh,’ Mr Bridge invited me to enter first.

She hung a right, hoping her usual parking spot was open, and took her foot off the gas.

Gabe was waiting on the sidewalk.

Her heart dropped.

He’d never done that. There must be something wrong. She fought the cold chill rattling her. What could be so urgent he couldn’t wait for her to walk into the restaurant? Or what was so important it needed to be discussed in private outside? Taking a deep breath, she navigated into the slot and shut off the car.

Gabe rushed to her door and opened it. She scrambled out. “What’s wrong?”

He clasped her hand and ushered her off the street to the sidewalk. Gripping both of her hands, he smiled, holding them against his heart. “Nothing’s wrong.” He nodded and shrugged, looking boyish, manly, handsome, adorable.

“Then what?” She searched his eyes for a clue. The sky was bright, and she could clearly see his beautiful eyes gleaming with—

Was she seeing happy-excitement, or...? Adrenaline shot through her, making her feel light-headed. “What?”

“Before it gets too busy, while it’s only you and me…” His wavy hair gleamed when he bent his head and kissed her hand. “I just didn’t want any distractions or songs, or work, or anything to get in the way.”

Was it Ella? Is she okay?

“You need to know you’re the last person I think of before I go to sleep, and the first person I see when I wake up. And I’m sure,” his eyes smiled, “if I remembered all my dreams, you’d be there too.”

“What?” she stared at him through the blur as her eyes began to fill. No one had ever said anything as poignant, as breathtaking—to her.

No one had come close, or a million miles away, to expressing anything nearly as tender or lovely—about her.

Butterflies, confetti, car horns, songs, and a thousand jangled, tangled, elated thoughts filled her heart and spilled over, bringing tears.

Before she could say anything, Gabe cradled her face in his hands and guided her lips to his, and she closed her eyes. And as crazy as it was, Juliet started crying. It wasn’t a sob, or heavy weeping, but warm tears poured from her closed eyes and streamed down her cheeks.

Breaking from the kiss, she turned to the adjacent red brick building and quickly wiped her tears away with the back of her hand before he could see.

But Gabe must have seen them, because she felt his hands on her shoulders, and he pulled her away from the building and against his chest and held her. They rocked together like that, on the sidewalk, under the moon and stars while distant sirens cried. Minutes ticked by without a word, but his embrace told her everything.
