It’s easy to think the jilted groom is probably a jerk. But what if he’s not? What if he’s the good guy?

Faith Copeland has moved back home to the North Fork, where she has to live with stares and whispers behind her back. In Darling Cove, she’ll only ever be Greg Mallory’s runaway bride.

Darling Cove Police Officer, Gregory Mallory has been living with the scars and shame of being left at the altar. Since Faith took off, he’s not wanted to settle down, putting the Mallory name in jeopardy.

When his runaway bride returns, Greg’s tough façade begins to wear away.

Can Greg and Faith deny the attraction still burning inside them after so long? Will they survive this time around if it doesn’t work out?

Excerpt

Plastic, metal and breasts.

Greg mentally inventoried everything he felt against his skin. His bare skin. It’d taken several seconds to process that he was standing in his underwear. With Faith’s body pressed into his chest, his arms around her shoulders prevented her from falling. His Faith. Her fingers twisted around the camera to secure it, causing long fingernails to scrape against his stomach.

“I have it,” Faith whispered as the pressure of her body against his began to wane.

Not so fast.

His fingers settled under her elbows holding her in place. The bottom of his chin brushed against the top of her head. All these years of imagining what he would say if they were in same room was lost to him at that moment.

Her head tipped back to meet his gaze. Months of distant glances all crashed down into a full-on eye locking stare. Smokey colored eye shadow swept across the beautiful blue eyes he’d gazed at for so many years. Pink lips she’d sunk her teeth into while watching him walk around his house as a young man had driven him to distraction. Her mouth…what he’d done with that mouth. Before…and after he took her virginity.

But one day, uncontrollable tears fell from those eyes. The astonishing words that had tumbled from her lips and mouth still burned in his memory after all these years: Greg, I can’t marry you.

He’d been too proud to beg and was brought up that a gentleman doesn’t raise his voice to a lady. There were so many restless nights he’d lie in bed speculating if Faith’s strange behavior a few weeks before the wedding shouldn’t have been dismissed as jitters.

The white-hot anger had melted away years ago, and even the mild taste of bitterness diminished. All he was left with was burning curiosity. He knew why she left. It was how she could leave that left him bewildered. An assignment in Iraq had come up. It’d been scheduled to leave two days before the wedding. She had sheepishly asked if they could postpone. Although he was quite annoyed, he’d been polite enough to hear her out. Until she dropped the bomb that it was a three-year assignment!

That topic however didn’t seem appropriate at the moment as he held her in that small office.

Greg was ready to speak, but Skye stood in the doorway with wide eyes and an open mouth.

“I’ll be out in a minute,” he repeated, but this time over Faith’s shoulder.

It forced her to spin around. “Oh my God.” She broke away to pull the camera strap over her head and took a giant step towards the door. “I just came in here for water.”

“A big tall glass of it I see.” Skye smirked with her arms crossed.

“What’s taking so long? Son of a—” Gwen rushed into the room as well.

It was enough to have a breakdown over! He was standing in tight boxer briefs in front of his two sisters and the woman he almost married. He dropped his hands to cover the nervous erection that liked to pop up at such inopportune times.

“My father’s getting too many calls, we have to get this moving.” Andrew came up behind Gwen and glanced at Greg. The panic he felt must have been all over his face. Andrew took immediate charge of the situation. “Ladies, let the man get dressed. Come on. Out. You too,” he said to his wife tapping her on the behind.

That’s my sister.

Andrew closed the door but stayed inside the room. He walked to the garment bag hanging on the coat rack. “I’ll give you a hand.” The man ran fashion shows and was used to seeing both men and women in all stages of undress.

Still, it was a little unnerving to have him there while Greg was battling his emotions. “I know how to put a suit on.”

“Prada suits can feel awkward at first. I wish you would have given me your exact measurements. I could have had it altered for you.”

“That’s not necessary. I doubt I’ll wear it again,” he said quickly, then inwardly choked, realizing that may have been an insult to the man’s livelihood.

While Greg had been quietly admiring Andrew’s sleek sophisticated look, he preferred jeans, flannel shirts and work boots. And a Glock tucked into his waistband. But he suspected Gwen didn’t want him packing heat in her engagement photos.

“Gwen filled me in on what happened with uh…that woman.” Andrew handed him a tan dress shirt, breaking the awkward silence. “I’m sorry. That must have been difficult.”

Greg had been ready to respond with a touch of sarcasm. Except Andrew had been widowed before he met Gwen. “Yeah. Well. Shit happens.” He tugged the dress pants to get them to fit over his thighs.

Andrew smirked touching his chin. “I have the same problem with Prada’s slacks.”

Greg turned toward the mirror. The fabric stretched tight across his butt. But the waist fit nicely, and the length was perfect. He buttoned up the shirt and stuffed it into the pants. His eyes rolled at the tie. “Purple?”

Andrew opened his arms. “Your sister made me wear a lavender shirt. You’re lucky you only have to wear the tie.” He smoothed his own, bright sapphire blue to match Gwen’s eyes.

A knock pounded on the door and it opened. “Seriously we have to… Oh my God!” Gwen squealed as her hands flew up to her face. “Greg! You look so handsome.”

Considering a former model was standing next to him, Greg took that as a huge compliment.

Review

Faith Copeland knew coming home would be hard but knew it was the right thing to do for her family. What she never expected was the hope of a second chance at the love she walked away from so long ago.

Greg Mallory has spent the last ten years trying to get over Faith, but that proved to be harder said than done. Now that she's back, those old feelings surface stronger than ever.

Although years have passed, they come back together like it was just yesterday. Their connection grows even more intense and this time neither want to let their second chance get away.

In order to have a future Faith knows she must reveal the secret that she's been keeping. And when Greg learns why she really called off their wedding, will he be able to accept it as a mistake and embrace the future? Or will this be what finally breaks their connection and have Greg walking away this time?

Must Have Faith is a captivating, heartstring pulling read that you won't want to put down.

The love and passion that flows between Faith and Greg flies off the pages and straight into the reader's heart. Even though so many years have passed, the love they share has never waned. I adore how much they understand each other and are always there for the other in the good times and bad.

Faith is a strong, independent woman that isn't afraid to stand up for herself and speak her mind. In a man's world she a woman that doesn't let anything stand in her way.

Greg is everything you could want in a hero. He's strong, loyal, kind, and mouthwatering in a uniform as well as a suit. He's a man of his word. I love how he goes all in with Faith and vowing not to let her get away again. Even when he knows she plans to leave again, he doesn't let that stop him. How can you not swoon over him?

While they try to fight their pull to each other a love like theirs can't be denied for long. And when it does... hot damn does it hot! Each and every time was hotter than the last, but just like in everyday life sometimes you get caught. (And when they do... I laughed so hard!!)

I really enjoyed Must Have Faith with it sensational storyline, the sexy and charming hero, the beguiling and endearing heroine, and the off the charts romance.

I highly recommend you pick up Must Have Faith, a bottle of wine, and settle into your favorite reading spot today.

Release Blitz & Review ~ Trust Me, A Moment In Time Novel, by G.P. Gadbios

Happy Book Birthday To G.P. Gadbios and Trust Me!

Trust Me
A Moment in Time Novel
by G.P. Gadbois
Release Date: May 7, 2018
Publisher: Roane Publishing

The attraction Suzanne feels towards Bill is intense when their paths cross again. Because he is seeing someone else, she keeps her feelings bottled up and leaves. To heal from the heartache, she turns to family, her girlfriends, and her horse.

Bill knows he’ll never settle for another, but trusting Suzanne has its risks. He listens to his heart, breaks up with his current girlfriend, and takes a trip to Canada to woo Suzanne.

Bill must return home. Unable to deal with the separation and a long distance relationship, Suzanne makes a life changing decision and moves to Bill’s home town.

Will the nasty graffiti, the threatening notes, the interference of Bill’s ex-girlfriend, and the tragic break-in impact Suzanne’s decision and send her back home for good?

Excerpt

The sky grew dark, the wind picked up, and it started to drizzle. Bill hurried, bought a burger, fries, a drink and returned to his bench at the top of the bleachers. On fairgrounds the further away he was from the horses, the better, he felt. He pulled his jean jacket on, put on a baseball cap, and kept his head down. He munched on the greasy food, and watched the Flag Races.

Suzanne’s turn came up once again. Her skill, speed and accuracy to pick up and drop off the flag into the barrel in 9.352 seconds got her the fourth place. Bill found her results amazing since this class had a larger number of participants, both male and female.

It poured rain during the Keyhole race. The spectators thinned, only the die-hard stayed to watch. Bill kept his eyes on the gorgeous cowgirl waiting near the gate. He kept his head down as Suzanne scanned the bleachers often. I’m a sitting duck here. To his relief, her name was called. She patted her horse’s neck and readied herself. She raced between the four barrels. Cinderella turned sharply, slipped and bumped into a barrel that wobbled but didn’t tip over. Bill stood holding his breath until he realized Suzanne was safe and the race was over.

Only a couple races left before I surprise her. Bill wiped his sweaty hands on his damp jeans. To calm his nerves and stretch, he left his seat. I should have brought flowers. The muddy path leading to the carnival area didn’t have one single wild flower, not even a dandelion. I’ll get her a teddy bear instead.

“Everyone wins.” The girl at the dart booth shouted, waving her arm. “Come here, give it a try. You can’t miss.” She convinced him.

He handed her five dollars and she gave him three dull darts. He burst two out of three balloons and walked away with a plastic mini-dinosaur. If this doesn’t win Sue over, nothing will. He shoved his prize into his coat pocket and returned to the bleachers.

The rain stopped, but the sky remained grey. In the arena, the Pole Bending races were taking place. Bill decided this race was his favorite. Cinderella and Suzanne raced to the far end of the poles, maneuvered around each pole with skill and grace once, then again in the opposite direction and raced back to the finish line at a high speed. Suzanne hugged Cinderella when she stood in the ring with her second-place ribbon.

The Dash Race was the last game of the day. Speed being the main objective, Bill thought it breath-taking. Cowboy hats flew off as riders and horses sped from one end of the ring to the other. All-in-all he found this race demonstrated the strength and speed of the horses more than the skill of the riders. Suzanne and Cinderella were good, Serge and Alexander the Magnificent were better in this race, finishing three seconds sooner.

Games are over, it’s show time. Bill followed Mr. Martin’s instructions and found Suzanne in between trailers, brushing Cinderella. Although the horses appeared to be tied safely to the trailer, Bill froze; too many horses in the small, confined area. You came this far, don’t let this stop you. Bill’s pep talk was interrupted.

“Sue, are you hungry?” A voice boomed from behind him.

“Only if you’re buying.” Suzanne replied without looking up.

“Come on, you won more than I did.” The man squeezed past Bill and stopped beside Suzanne.

Bill envied and hated the guy all at once. He’d moseyed in and stolen his moment.

“Brian, stop whining…” Suzanne said as she stood and turned to face the intruder. She closed, and then opened her eyes. “Bill!”

Brian followed Suzanne’s gaze and his eyes narrowed as he examined Bill.

“Is it really you?” Suzanne moved around Brian. “How long have you been here?”

“All day. Please come closer?” Bill ignored the intruder, and sprung his declaration for all to hear. “I’d like to take you up on that second chance offer.”

Her eyebrows rose for a split second before she smiled, and ran into his open arms.

“God I’ve missed you, Sue.” He lifted her off the ground.

“Sue, will this reunion be long?” Brian barked.

“I hope so,” Suzanne replied without looking at the guy.

Bill set Suzanne down and pulled her against him. She was finally where he wanted her.

“Fine, I’ll see you around.” The intruder took his leave.

Suzanne ran her hands up and down Bill’s back. “I’m so glad to see you, but I can’t believe you’re here.”

He’d waited so long for this moment, and didn’t want to waste it with explanations. There would be plenty of time later. He tilted her chin up and kissed her. She tensed, but didn’t fight it. A hint of peppermint lingered on her soft responsive lips and the combination excited his senses. Horses neighed and Bill’s head shot up. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath when he saw no one around. His promise to Mr. Martin would be hard to keep.

“Bill, are you okay?”

He nodded. “Let’s go grab a bite to eat. I’ll buy.”

Review

Suzanne Martin never expected to meet a man that would captive her in a small town so far away from her home. And just as their relationship is heating up, she walks away from him thinking it was for the best. But a year has past and she hasn't gotten over him, so when the opportunity to rekindle their relationship, will she take the chance or walk away again?

Bill Grant has tried to move on after Suzanne ended their relationship but she's always been there in the back of his mind. When he learns that she would love a second chance, he makes a plan to win her back.

As their relationship deepens strange occurrences seem to be happening to her and Bill. Will they be able to withstand the bumps in the road or will the misdeeds drive them apart forever?

Trust Me is an intriguing, enchanting read that captivates the reader from cover to cover.

I love how Suzanne goes all in with second guessing. She doesn't know if this time they will last forever, but she takes the chance that it could be everything she always hoped for. I love how kind, honest, and loyal she is to everyone around her. She's got a big heart and isn't afraid to show it.

When Bill commits his heart and soul to Suzanne, he never wavers no matter what is thrown at him. There is really nothing he wouldn't do for her. And when it comes to everyone else, he's always fair and honest, always willing to lend a helping hand when needed. He's a down to earth man that appreciates the little things.

After Caught Between Worlds, I was really excited to get to know Suzanne and Bill better and Trust Me doesn't disappoint. The storyline is riveting, the hero swoon worthy, the heroine delightful, and the passion exquisite.

Trust Me is a most pleasurable read and I would highly recommend.

Excerpt

Paige reappeared at the table, bustling a bit. “OK, guys, I’ve ordered coffee, and some really great dessert, and paid the bill already, including a nice tip. Unfortunately, Chris and I have to go, because there’s a thing I have to do tomorrow, and I have to prep tonight. I’m so sorry.”

Liz’s mouth dropped open in shock at her friend, as Paige came around the table and gave her a big hug.

Chris said, “What thing? Wait, we don’t get dessert?”

“It’s something I forgot about completely, sweetie. I’m so sorry. All my fault. We have pie at home.” She gave Tom a long hug from behind his chair, pressing her hands across his chest. “Have a great time, you two! Dinner was great! Love you both!”

She grabbed Chris’s hand and practically dragged him away.

Liz looked across the table at Tom as the waiter brought coffee and dessert. It did look amazing, but Liz didn’t see it, because all she could do was stare in pure, abject horror at the two name tags that Paige had stuck to Tom’s chest during her hug. The top one said:

“Hi, My Name Is Tom”

The one immediately beneath it had been altered to read:

“Your Name Is Liz”

“I feel like there might be something here that I’m missing.” Tom’s deep voice pulled her out of her thousand-yard stare. She looked up into his handsome face, which was wearing quite possibly the most endearing smile she had ever seen in her life. There was simply no getting out of this.

“You are wearing two name tags,” she said, the corners of her mouth lifting into a smile. “It’s Paige’s way of trying to be a good friend while simultaneously being a colossal, meddling pain in the ass. She knows there’s no reasonable explanation for these,” she waved at the name tags, “except for the real one, and that I’m a terrible liar anyway. So she’s forcing my hand.” She shook her head, sighed, picked up her fork, and waved at his dessert plate. “Start enjoying, and I will share my tale,” she said expansively.

Tom was astonished at the rapid turn of events. First, Paige had pulled Chris away so quickly and left them together. Second, Liz had looked completely panicked for a minute, but now looked calm, almost resigned. He picked up his fork and started eating.

“So, I don’t know if guys do this, not being one myself, but I will tell you that almost every girl I have ever met in my life has built for themselves some sort of fantasy at some time or another. And there is usually a leading male role in these fantasies. It might be a different guy in each different story line in her head, but probably the same basic formula for the guy. It’s a stereotype, but think, ‘tall, dark, and handsome.’

“Some girls get more specific than that. Think, ‘tall, blond, doctor, and loves dogs.’” She took a sip of coffee. “And then there are some girls who take their fantasies to an entirely different level when it comes to specifics. So, here’s where you need to follow along carefully, think ‘six-foot four, shaggy light brown hair, blue eyes, broad shoulders, defenseman on a hockey team, enforcer, amazing smile.’ I could go on, because believe it or not there are a few more, and they all fit, but I’m hoping you’ve gotten the idea by this point.”

Tom had stopped and was staring at her, his fork halfway to his mouth, wondering if she was kidding.

“So, you show up, Paige tells me you are the Micky I’ve been hearing about for years, and says Chris has decided that we would get along great and wants us to go out for dinner. I very carefully pointed out to her the details I just mentioned–which she knew, being my best friend for, oh, I don’t know, forever–and explained that it was a terrible idea, because I wouldn’t even be able to remember your name. She suggested a name tag. I said I wouldn’t be able to remember my own name…and here we are.”

Tom finished the last of his dessert quietly, sat back, and looked at her. “So, if I’m understanding this, what you’re saying is that I am your personal fantasy.”

Review

Liz Williams is the life of the party and everyone's friend, but one look into Micky's eyes and she quickly becomes befuddled.

Tom McCullin has never met a woman quite like Liz and getting to know her better is item one on his is list of things to do.

Their friendship was destined to be right from the start but as their relationship deeps the past starts muddy up the waters. Can they find a way to move past their issues before it's too late? Or will miscommunications and misunderstanding be too hard of a road block to overcome?

Kissing Micky is a fun, witty, captivating story that grips the readers attention from the first page until the incredible end.

I really love Liz (and not just because of her name 😉) with her feisty, no holds barred attitude. He ability to speak her mind no matter what is refreshing and endearing. She could have easily let her past change her but instead she embraced it and thusly made her stronger. She's open, honest, loyal, witty, and down to earth making her just the type of person you want standing next to you in good times and bad.

Tom, aka Micky, has got the looks to make women stop in their tracks and drool, but if you look past the handsome exterior you'll discover a man that is worth swooning over. Sure he can go all caveman and possessive sometimes, but he really is just a teddy bear that would move heaven and earth for the people he loves.

I really enjoyed getting to know Liz and Tom and watching them fall in love, build a long last friendship, and helping each other work through their issues. Their connection is electric right from the start, and when the sparks ignites, the flames fly right off the pages. Talk about some heat!

Overall, with its entertaining storyline, incredible heroine, drool worthy hero, and intense passion, this make a perfect combination for a very pleasurable read. I honestly believe once you start Kissing Micky, you won't want to stop.

Or maybe you will so you can find your own Micky to kiss and kiss and kiss some more. 💋

Release Blitz & Review ~ Eye On The Ball, Playing For Glory #1, by Francine Beaton

New from Francine Beaton!

Eye on the Ball
Playing for Glory #1
Publisher: Roane Publishing
Contemporary Romance Novel
Release Date: March 19, 2018

What would prove stronger? Love or Loyalty?

Top professional rugby player Jakes du Plessis desperately wants to keep his team's vow of celibacy in order to win the new International Rugby Club Competition, but he didn’t count on meeting ethereal artist Angie Summers.  Even a promise to his friends and teammates, demons from his past, and a distance of more than 9000 miles, could not stop Jakes from falling in love with Ange.  In the end, it took teamwork, perseverance and a whole lot of grovelling from Jakes’ side for them to overcome these obstacles, and find their Happily Ever After.

Excerpt

She took the envelope from uncle Bob in silence. She would not grovel for this job. She had to make another plan. She grimaced, “I guess you want me to leave now?” she asked.

Bob nodded, “Yes, I’m sorry Ange.”

Ange didn’t reply. She turned around to walk to the room next to the kitchen where she stored her jacket and bag. On the way to the door, she picked up a pitcher with ice water and walked towards the table where Jakes now sat with her brother, her fiancé, and a couple of their teammates.

Ange did not even glance at her brother or Chris when she stopped next to their table. She heard Jesse’s voice when he asked the others if they wanted more beer, and they all turned to her expectantly. Even Jakes lifted his head to look at her. Did he look guilty, or embarrassed, Ange wondered. Well, it didn’t matter anymore. He got what he wanted, she guessed.

His voice was gentle when he asked for another beer, so much different from his angry tone of voice when he spoke to her every other time. Her mouth almost dropped open, but he was not going to fool her. Her face was set when she spoke.

“You can fetch your own beer.”

She saw his frown and confused face, but she did not care. He caused her to lose her job and her only way to help Clara. She glared at him again, “I’ve got something else for you.”

Ange lifted the jug and poured the ice-cold water over his head. She heard his sudden indrawn breath, and her brother and his friends’ shocked protests, but she didn’t wait. She turned around and walked out of the clubhouse, suddenly calm. She was aware the place was quiet, apart from the South African’s soft muttering. She heard her brother’s voice, but she did not care. She felt so much better for it.

While she walked back to her car, Ange realized it was not fair to Jakes. Maybe she should have saved some of the water for Chris. He might need it to cool down in a place where he needed it most.

* * * *

When Jakes managed to cool down…, no not cool down. That ice water cooled him enough…but when he felt calm again, he’d had more than enough for one night. He did not know what he’d done to make the woman so angry, but he didn’t care anymore. She’d caused him enough damage already.

“What did you do to my sister to make her so angry?” Jesse asked him.

Jakes stared uncomprehendingly at Jesse, and shook his head, “Your sister?” he asked, confused.

“Ange?” Jesse asked patiently. “The one who poured a jug of water over your head?”

Jakes stared at Jesse. “She’s your sister?” He was shocked. Jakes noticed Jesse’s nod, then he sighed, “Hell, I hadn’t done anything. I should be angry. She was the one who damaged my leg again last week. The first time I saw her she spilled water on me. Why she’s angry, I don’t know.”

The other men at the table glanced at each other. To Jakes’ surprise, they burst out laughing.

“What the hell?” he exclaimed, standing up. “I can’t see what’s so funny,” he grunted while he threw money on the table. “Just keep your sister away from me,” he said to Jesse before he stalked away as fast as he could. This was becoming a total frustration, he thought, while he walked the couple of blocks to the apartment.

It was freezing cold, he was away from home, and somehow he’d managed to get on the wrong side of the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. The fact she was apparently engaged to the biggest asshole on the team should have given Jakes enough signals to make sure he stayed away. Without making too much noise, he let himself into the apartment he shared with Michael, with the realization that his own pep talk did not help. He still thought she was beautiful that she had a fiancé was enough warning for Jakes to stay away. That reason, together with the rest of the list why he should not even think about her, was as long as his forearm.

Review

If you are looking for a read that will take you on a journey from the US to South Africa and have you falling love along the way, then I recommend you pick up Eye on the Ball.

The connection between Jakes and Ange is intense and watching them fall in love is captivating. Their journey isn't without it's pitfalls, but their perseverance is endearing.

Ange is a feisty little thing you can't help but love. Her heart is big and her need to help everyone is sensational. Jakes may appear like the strong silent type, and he is, but there's also more to him than meets the eye. These two may not appear to be right for each other, but the more you get to know them the more you can see how perfect they are for each other.

I really enjoyed this debut read from Francine. The storyline was fresh and intriguing and the charterers well developed and readers can easily connect with them. The passion is a slow burn slowly ignites into a burning inferno that time and space can't extinguish.

I highly suggest you pick up Eye on the Ball and get to know Jakes and Ange and fall in love right along with them.

About The Author

Born and brought up in Pretoria, South Africa, Francine had no choice but to fall in love with rugby at a young age. With three older, rugby-playing brothers and a father who was a fanatic supporter of the local team and the Springboks, Francine adopted the motto, If you can’t beat them, join them. After trying to play one game, Francine gave up the idea to play rugby. She opted to watch the boys from the side.

At the tender age of ten, she discovered the romance section in the local library and that was it. She was a fan. By fourteen, she had read all the ones in the Afrikaans section and switched to the English section. There was a time when Francine briefly abandoned her favourite genre to lose herself in crime novels, but as they say: you never forget your first love.

Rugby, romance and writing is not all that keep Francine busy. If she does not spent time with her Scottish husband and teenage daughter either at home or travelling, Francine loves to read, or dabbles in photography and painting.

She is a member of the Romance Writers Association of South Africa (ROSA).

I've tried telling my friends and family numerous times, but something always gets in my way. At least that's what I tell myself. Since my ex-boyfriend basically called me a walking disease, I've lost a bit of my self confidence you could say. I mean, how am I suppose to tell my friends and family? I guess writing a letter to my parents won't cut it.

More importantly, how is Travis, the new guy I like going to take the news? He is perfect, and I am far from it. I have to trust him, but trusting someone is easier said than done.

If dealing with HIV wasn't enough, the bombshell my mom decided to invoke on my sister and I sure takes the cake. At least that's what I thought, until I attended Lauren's birthday party. Who knew that would be a night I would never forget.

This isn't good. She knows, damn it. I can't even lie to her and tell her I take the

medications for a different reason. She knows what the medications are for. I completely

forgot I had my medications in my purse when I gave her permission to go in it to grab the

tampon. I mean, I wasn't thinking. I was half asleep.

I don't know what to say. She’s caught me off guard. I stay silent.

"The medications are anti-retroviral medications. They are used to treat HIV."

Cori gasps, completely shocked. Cori looks at me, but I turn my head. I can't look at her. "Do you have HIV?" She asks.

I stand up to clear my plate. I've lost my appetite. What am I supposed to say?

"Those aren't mine."

Brennley stands up. "Hayden, I saw your name on them."

I get defensive. This is my worst case scenario. I wanted to be the one to tell them on my own accord, so Brennley finding out this way? It’s awful.

"Maybe I took them out under my name for someone else, did you ever think of that? Maybe someone who’s ashamed of having to go to the pharmacy to buy them, worried they will be judged? Did you ever think of that?" Okay, that was a horrible lie, but I'm feeling cornered.

Brennley blows out a breath, and scratches her head. "No, I didn't. I wasn't accusing you of anything. I was just stating what I saw."

I'm angry, but only because they found out like this. "Well, don't jump to conclusions."

I look over at Cori and I can see tears forming in her blue eyes. "Hayden, just be honest with us. Whose medications are those?"

I squeeze my eyes shut. I will not cry. "No one's!" I shout.

I look over and see tears now forming in Brennley's eyes. I can't do this. There are too many emotions floating throughout this room. I'm sad, hurt, angry, devastated, frustrated, and feeling very, very guilty.

"They aren't mine," I sob. My shoulders begin to shake. Cori comes over and lifts my hands away from my face and wraps me in a hug.

"Hayden, it's okay if they are yours, just be honest with us. We don't care if they are yours."

You know the feeling you get when you are about to cry and someone asks you if you are alright, and it's them saying that, that makes you ultimately cry? That's what I'm feeling right now. I release Cori's grip on me and gently push her away. I turn and walk to the other side of the kitchen. I turn to face them. I wipe the tears that have spilled down my cheeks. I shake out my hands. My heart is hammering in my chest. My chest feels tight, like an elephant is sitting on it. I feel a bit dizzy, like the room is moving and I'm having trouble seeing straight. I take a deep breath until both of them come back into focus.

I decide it's time for the truth to come out. Although when I tell them I can't look at them. I'm scared to see their reaction.

"Alright, I give up. Those pills are mine." I cry. "Because I am, in fact, HIV positive."

Happy Book Birthday To
Reality Ever After!

Reality Ever After
Virtual Match #3
By Sharon Hughson
Release Date: Jan. 22, 2018

Happily ever after collides with reality to make or break their love.

Systems architect Marcus Jordan proclaims his love for career girl Veronica Shay, but life keeps hurling obstacles into their relationship. When Ronnie’s niece is born prematurely, Ronnie rushes to be the big sister Tony needs, knowing she is to blame for his fear of failing at fatherhood.

Marcus decides to help put their daddy issues to rest, but his discovery sends Ronnie into a tailspin. Ronnie already knows trusting men risks her heart and stability. Why would she want to meet the first man who rejected her?

An even bigger secret about Ronnie’s father convinces Ronnie to give him one chance to explain, never knowing it will bring her face to face with the true source of her trust issues.  Will the revelation come too late to restore the happiness she’d found with Marcus?

Excerpt

Marcus pulled Ronnie against his side, and she nestled under his arm like a kitten seeking warmth. His hand squeezed her waist while his chin tapped the top of her head.

“Thanks for coming.” Her voice was hushed, as if a normal tone might wake the babies.

“Stop thanking me. I wouldn’t have let you come alone.”

An independent part of her raised its back at what sounded like overbearing words. Ronnie shoved the ire away. Marcus wanted to take care of her in the same way she wanted to take care of her brother.

Movement beyond the second nursery caught her eye. A dark-haired man stood up, his face covered by a mask and body engulfed in a yellow paper gown: her brother. He spoke with a nurse before walking out of sight.

Ronnie scanned for an exit, shuffling toward the nurse’s station visible through the nursery’s glass wall. She drew slightly away from Marcus, preparing to be strong for Tony.

Her brother was discarding the paper robe and mask when she rounded the corner. He swiveled toward her with military precision and wrapped her in his arms.

“How is Jen?” Ronnie pulled away slightly and watched his face for tells. Dark circles smudged his eyes and wrinkles drew his mouth into a firm line.

“Stable. She lost a lot of blood, but they saved her uterus.”

Ronnie had been reading about placenta previa and the related side effects during the flight. About five percent of women needed a hysterectomy to staunch the blood flow associated with the misplaced placenta. As much as Tony wanted to father a son, it would have been heartbreaking for them if this was their only child.

“The baby?”

“She’s plugged into a breathing machine and hooked to a dozen different monitors. Most of her vitals are good, but she didn’t breathe on her own at delivery.”

A girl. This tiny one didn’t know how lucky she was to have a loving, protective father watching over her. A tug in her chest distracted. Was she wishing for a father? The one who sired her had walked away, and the replacement her mother chose had done unspeakable things.

She shook her head, tucking a strand straying from her upswept hair behind her ear. That was old news. This was the future.

Ronnie squeezed her brother’s fingers. “What can I do for you?”

Tony shrugged.

“Are you ready to sleep?” Ronnie peered into the tired lines of his drawn face. The adrenaline she imagined fueling him all day had run out, but behind the hazel eyes like hers, she saw anxiety, and she’d been reading those eyes for three decades. “How about a walk?” Ronnie wasn’t sure if it would help him, but anything had to be better than sitting in a hospital room.

Marcus squeezed her waist. Ronnie glanced up at him, breath catching at the tender look in his cobalt eyes.

“I’ll book a nearby hotel.” It was the one thing he hadn’t done in advance since they might have stayed at the hospital with her brother. Marcus wouldn’t expect to share a room with her and understood she wanted to pay her own way.

Ronnie rose on her toes and nearly touched his ear with her lips. His indrawn breath made her heart vault against her chest.

“One room.”

His eyes widened. She pressed her lips to his in a perfunctory kiss then turned to thread her arm through Tony’s.

“There’s a waiting room down that hall.” Tony gestured to the opposite side of the nurse’s station.

As he navigated the maze of halls to another bank of elevators, Ronnie fell into step with her brother. On the ground floor, he led her into a walled-in garden. Their shoes thumped against the paved path around the edge. Minutes passed in silence, and she drew a deep breath of temperate air, so different than the chill moist air near her apartment.

“Greg and Angie will be down tomorrow.”

Tony grunted.

“When’s Mom going to be here?”

“Dennis wanted to drive over and stay through the holidays.”

The holidays? It was nearly three weeks until Christmas. Ronnie shook her head and drew a breath to comment.

Tony continued. “She doesn’t want to fly in case she has an episode. It embarrasses her to lose control of her limbs.” He sighed. “While Dennis relayed their plans, she never stopped blathering about this being the only grandchild she’ll ever meet.”

Ronnie hugged his arm. The firm bicep bulged beneath her fingers, reminding her of Marcus’s very un-engineer-like arms. She pushed thoughts of him away. He was a distraction, and she needed to focus on her family. Hadn’t she told him as much on Sunday?

If she could shake her mother right now, Ronnie would do it. Couldn’t she see that Tony needed encouragement? Obviously, this terminal illness was going to exacerbate her mother’s self-centered tendencies.

“How can I help?” Please don’t say handle, Mom. But, she would do it if that’s what he needed.

Tony stopped walking and faced her. A desolate look stared back at her. “I don’t know how to be a good father. How could I? I never had one.”

Ronnie’s stomach nosedived into her feet. The truth was too much of a burden for her brother, which is why she had kept her secret for so long.

“Stop.” Her voice broke. She stiffened her spine and squinted at him. “You are three times the man of anyone who ever claimed to be your father.”

His ragged breaths did nothing to cool Ronnie’s flaming cheeks. If she could go back, she wouldn’t tell him anything.
