It’s not easy, being an unmarried woman in the England of 1814. But Nancy Worth will not marry where there is no love, and every man in her small Sussex village is either too old, too young, or has a face like a fish. Except for the handsome Bartholomew Boult, and he has his own reasons for pursuing her.

When, against all the odds, Nancy does find love, both her family and his are determined to put a stop to it. He is gentry, and she a farmer’s daughter. With lies and gossip flying, as well as the unexpected resumption of war, it seems everyone is trying to separate her from Will Carlton.

Excerpt

Nancy dragged the bonnet from her aching head and swung it by its ribbons, using it to dash intrusive sprays of vegetation out of her way. Wrapped in smothering thoughts, she did not hear the voices until she stepped out of the narrow way into the edge of a field.

Only a few yards away, Bartholomew Boult was speaking to one of his farmhands. He turned as Nancy appeared abruptly behind him and snapped a command. The farmhand slouched off with an interested glance over his shoulder.

Boult took a couple of steps towards her. “Miss Worth? May I be of assistance?”

Nancy blinked the angry tears from her eyes, her spine ram-rod straight. “I know my way, thank you, Mr Boult. I am quite all right.”

He came nearer. “Are you sure?”

He was too close for her comfort. She could smell the maleness of him and, despite her dislike of the man, her body betrayed her. Her belly fluttered and she was uneasily certain that he could feel the warmth that had flooded her loins.

He smiled, relishing her discomposure. His wager with Satterthwaite was as good as won. A ripe, juicy plum, ready to fall into his hand. The only question was whether she would fall without the prize of marriage. And whether it would be worth the brouhaha if she did, he thought cynically.

No harm in edging the matter along. He reached out a forefinger, set it under her chin and planted a kiss on her lips.

The next instant, his ears were ringing from the slap she dealt him.

“How dare you?” She was standing very upright, her eyes kindling with fury. “You forget yourself, sir.”

He rubbed his cheek ruefully, but a grin spread over his face. So she wasn’t the easy conquest he had thought. Better! Much better. This would provide some sport.

“I beg your forgiveness, but you must agree that some of the fault is yours. You have such damnably kissable lips.”

“Let me pass, if you please.” Nancy crammed the bonnet back onto her head. If she had remembered that this path touched on Boult’s land, she would have thought twice about coming this way on her own. She had not forgotten entirely the suspicion that had surfaced, so formless that it was like trying to catch a moonbeam in a jar. How had he known that she had been visiting Susan that day? But she was far too angry to be afraid.

“Come, Miss Worth, cry quits. Indeed, you have my sincere apologies. May I squire you back to Millcote, to make amends?”

“No, you may not.” Her thunderous face reinforced her words.

“I bow to your wishes. Believe me, I have no desire to put you out of countenance. And pray put my lapse of behaviour out of your mind. It shall not happen again.”

Sincerity, that’s the dandy. Let her think she’s got the better of me. I’ll wager she ain’t been kissed before. Give her time, and she’ll want more.

It was all Nancy could do not to run, but she kept her head up and walked steadily away down the path. Once she was sure he was not following her, she stopped to scrub at her lips, but she could still taste him.

She was uncomfortably aware of the flash of desire that had swept over her, but he could not have known of her feelings, could he? Moistening her handkerchief at her lips, she scrubbed harder. Surely, she could have these yearnings only for the man who engaged her affections? It was what everybody said happened. And she did not like Bartholomew Boult one little bit.

Water. She needed to wash his touch away with the cleanliness of water. There was a stream a little further on. She could dip her handkerchief in that. But when she came to the banks of the brook, Will Carlton was sitting there with his back towards her and his sketchpad on his knee.

About The Author

I always wanted to work with animals, although I was strongly attracted to drama and flirted for a while with the idea of trying for a Drama College. But the animals won, and I became a nurse at the Blue Cross Animal Hospital.

I’d been there seven years when the hospital had central heating put in. I married the engineer and spent the next twenty-seven years driving a truck known as the Flying Pig around the building-sites of London, loaded to the gunnels with boiler sections, copper tube and the occasional smelly contents of a grease-trap.

When we stopped the installation side, there were no longer fitters waiting impatiently for my truck and me. For a while I acted as part-time secretary/book-keeper/maker of tea, but seized the opportunity to pursue my love of writing.

Do you remember ‘composition’ when you were at school? That was my favourite thing, apart from history. Even when I was driving The Pig, stories would come into my mind and I couldn’t wait to get back and write them down. Walking Polly the English Bull Terrier helps (she goes at two miles a fortnight!), as does running through our lovely Surrey countryside.

This week's new Novella Niblets Release

Winter Fairy Tale
Contemporary Romance
By: Laura Lamoreaux and T.L. French
Publisher: Roane Publishing
Release Date: February 15, 2017
Keywords: Contemporary, Romance, Sweet, Novella, Wedding, Valentine's Day

Sometimes, to remember all that is best and bright about love, you must go home.

After being dumped by her boyfriend of two years, there is nothing that Sarah Jepsom dreads more than going back home to her marriage-obsessed mother.  To make matters worse, it’s for her little sister’s fairytale wedding on none other than Valentine's Day.  The only positive note is it will also be a chance to see her dear friend Mark for the first time in a year.

Sarah's Bridezilla sister Valerie takes it upon herself to invite Sarah’s old high school boyfriend to be her date for the wedding. Nathan is set on renewing their relationship, but old feelings remind Sarah why it didn't work the first time. When Mark confesses his long-held feelings for her, Sarah is angry and convinced that romance is not for her. Then, her father reminds her of all that is best and bright about love, that can often be found right under our noses.

Excerpt

“You know,” Nathan said, leaning over and dropping the tone of his voice. “You haven’t changed a bit. Still the same, beautiful Sarah.” He pressed his lips to the side of her neck.

Sarah jumped.

There was a crash.

“Oh, shoot. That’s just like me. I just make a mess anywhere I go,” Mark said loudly. He stood up from the table and dropped his linen napkin onto the mess he had just made with his soda. “I’m going to see about getting us some waiters in here. Sarah, do you want to come with me?”

Sarah jumped up from the table, face on fire. She could still feel Nathan’s hand on her leg like a brand. “Yes! I mean, sure. The manager came by a while ago. Maybe he’s still here.”

Nathan grabbed her hand. “You don’t have to do that. Let Mark--”

“No, no. I’m the Maid of Honor. I should go,” she said, pulling it away and giving him her biggest, brightest, smile. It was the one she usually reserved for worried clients. It made her face hurt too much to use in real life.

“Are you going to find out where our food is? This is supposed to be a catered lunch,” Valerie said, seeing Sarah rise from the table.

“Yes, I’m on it. Just hold on everybody.” She hit everyone with the smile again, and stepped away from the table, heading toward the hostess’s station, with Mark beside her.

Mark put his arm across her shoulders and drew her behind a wall, screening her from view of everyone at the table. “Are you okay?” His hazel eyes searched hers, anxiety for her well-being clearly etched in the worry lines around them. “I know what he did to you--”

“That was a long time ago,” Sarah said, shaking her head to cut him off. “I can handle him now.”

“Like you were handling it at the table when you were practically crawling out of your seat to get away?”

Another flush heated Sarah’s cheeks. “What, is it wrong that I didn’t want to cause a scene at my sister’s wedding?”

“No, what’s wrong is that you let him get away with it before, and you’re letting him do it again!”

“It’s not the same. We weren’t even alone together.”

“And how long do you think it’s going to be before he corners you somewhere?” Mark backed a step away from her and pushed his hands into his hair. “I can’t stand listening to him tell you how long it’s been since he got laid. And every time he would give you that look, I--”

Sarah knew just what look he meant. The intensity of his stares had made her feel special when she was in high school. Now, it felt different somehow.

Maybe because she knew what came next.

Mark put his hands on her shoulders. “I don’t want you to get hurt. Not again.”

Cursed and disfigured, Calliope must find true love before the final leaf falls from the Enchanted Tree. Being bound to her mansion on the outskirts of town leaves her with little hope.

Yareena and the mansion staff do their best at matchmaking, but Calliope can't reveal her darkest secret. Will Bastian discover her true beauty before it’s too late?

Excerpt

Calliope returned her attention to Bastian, grasping his shoulder with a gentle hand and giving him a small shake. When he didn’t stir, she considered how she could clean the wound without undressing him as he slept. She had never taken off a man’s clothing before, and she hardly wanted her first time to be when he wasn’t even aware of her actions. But, no other options seemed available. She started at the bottom button of his shirt, working her way up with trembling fingers, and spreading the fabric apart when the last of the buttons slipped free.

Her eyes roamed his upper body. While she was supposed to be assessing the extent of his injuries, she couldn’t deny the flash of heat that blasted through her at the sight of his bare skin.

She dipped a washcloth in the basin that Mrs. Widdleworth left on the night table, wringing out the excess water. As she dabbed at the gash near his naval, his vulnerability in that moment struck her in a way she had not expected. After their first encounter, she would have predicted his ego to get in the way, choosing to bleed to death in the cold rather than accept anything from her.

Although he suffered a serious injury, his daughter seemed to remain his utmost concern. Could his earlier ill-temper have been an unusual display? A behavior born out of fear for his daughter’s safety?

Maybe she had been wrong about him.

She pressed her lips together, allowing the notion to sink in as she dropped the bloody fabric off to the side, and proceeded to stitch the wound with shaky fingers. When the task was complete, she picked up a fresh cloth to use as a dressing. Relief washed over her as she inspected the area before covering it up. The slice in his flesh went deep, but not nearly as deep as she initially feared. She positioned the bandage and fixed it in place, her gaze catching a thin trail of hair that started under the center of his chest, following the way it continued lower down his body, and even further yet where it dipped beneath his trousers.

“It’s been a long time since a woman has laid her hands on me,” Bastian said, his voice rough.

Calliope jumped, heat infusing her cheeks. “My apologies if this offends. Marcus doesn’t fare well with blood. I had to care for your injury myself.” Her eyes met his, and to her surprise, no anger seemed to stir there.

“I was only teasing.” He swallowed hard, appearing to bite back the immense discomfort he had to be feeling. “Thank you.”

She inclined her head. “You’re welcome.”

“I shouldn’t have been so terse with you earlier. Yareena is my life, and when I couldn’t find her, well…” He reached for his face, pressing the heel of his hand against his jaw. “I lost my sense for a short while. I apologize.”

Excerpt

From Stealing Time by Wendy Sparrow

Zeit snapped his fingers as he approached the sweet brunette stumbling through the snow. All around him, shoppers froze, and the air went still. Snow hung in place like a fog. Hannah shouldn’t be out on the streets on the day before Christmas. It was too busy. Too crowded. Hell, it was too easy—she made it easier to kill her than to keep her alive on days like this.

He could feel the pull of the Fates as they attempted, once again, to steal her from him. His beautiful conundrum was standing too close to the curb again and about to hit a patch of ice. In another fifteen seconds of mortal’s time, she’d have slipped on the ice, as that woman carrying the terrier brushed by, knocking Hannah out in front of the snow plow.

Messy.

“You’re getting gruesome,” Zeit called to the Fates.

He stopped in front of the pink-cheeked mortal.

“Thirty-eight times now, Hannah.” Thirty-eight times he’d stopped the clock for her.

Snow clung to her eyelashes, and her red lips were parted, probably in shock that she’d, once again, dropped her favorite scarf. Her hand was poised at her neck, feeling for the crimson scarf he held in his hand.

And Raz is all too eager to oblige. But Beth is uneasy, and with good reason. Raz and his crew have developed a worrying reputation around town. Assault, vandalism, theft – it seems there’s nothing they haven’t done…according to rumour. But are the gossips to be believed?

Will Beth listen to the disturbing tales and keep her distance? Or will she decide for herself and get to know the real Raz as they work together, amidst the strawberry fields?

Behind the shadows lies the truth…

A magic mirror and a houseful of ghosts await Kristen when fate leads her to Wanderly House. Secrets and spirits consume her days, but one look in the magic mirror and her heart falls fast. A mask, a cloak, and a key leading her to an enchanted evening in the faery garden might be Kristen's end as all that glitters may well have sharp teeth.

Magic mirror on the wall…

Connor is trapped in Faery. With only a view through a bewitched mirror to the real world, his attention is nabbed by a curious cat shifter with a ghostly following. Can he find a way to break the spell that binds him so he can reach the girl that haunts his dreams?

When the forces of Faery and Wanderly House collide, will Kristen and Connor's love be enough to save them?

Water Woman

Sparks fly when a Spanish water woman, and an African two-horned horse shifter meet at a masquerade. Kimoni has gone to ask Isidora to use her skills to aid him with his ailing grandfather. When strangers claiming to be Isidora’s relatives try to force her to share her powers, the pair is plunged into danger. Isidora and Kimoni look for a way to fight the ruthless intruders, while also saving his grandfather.

Using their combined powers, they meet the challenge, all the while conscious of the growing attraction between them. It has been a long time since Isidora has met a man who calls to her as Kimoni does. The strong, handsome horse shifter sings to her senses, and she sees a matching spark in his eyes. Can love between them blossom? Can a water woman and a horse shifter find happiness together?

Dragon Law

The kingdom of Baelin is under attack. A terrifying dragon rains fire down on the capital city, burning all in his path. The people’s one hope lies with the Princess Draxa, who – in accordance with an ancient rite – must willingly sacrifice her future to sate the beast’s wrath.

For her kingdom, Draxa will do it. She will leave Andre, the fierce soldier she loves with all of her heart, don her red cloak, and make the treacherous trip into the heart of the mountain, to face the monstrous Lord Siouxlian in his lair.

Feather Fall

Brooke Adair's autism has turned the world into a constant puzzle, especially when it comes to men. When she meets fellow swan shifter Blake Landen in a dream, though, Brooke feels a potential connection to someone who could understand her. If she lets him.

But trusting in Blake takes a whole lot more courage than Brooke has. After all, if she doesn’t take this leap, Brooke might miss out on meeting the one man she could actually learn to understand.

Duty or Desire

Alyona Wyrden dwells contentedly in her elven realm, but when her brother disappears, she travels to Earth to bring him home.

Camden Kerr hunts down magical artifacts, keeping them out of the wrong hands. The amulet that draws Alyona to her brother is just the sort of object Cam’s after. The way his flesh responds to the lithe, blonde necklace wearer is a different matter altogether. When their paths keep crossing, Camden decides they can work together-until he discovers her elven heritage.

Can their attraction defeat prejudice? Which will rule—duty or desire?

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Sharon Hughson
Keeping the word count under 15,000 words. Usually, I can whip a short story into shape in 10,000 words or so, but this one had more complexity. Even though I brought my fantasy creature to Earth, I still had to give some description of her home world, since that’s her context for describing everything she experienced on our planet.

Dana Wright
Keeping the romance sweet. I write erotic romance under my other pen name, so I had to remind myself not to go into steamy territory. lol.

Sheryl Winters
What was the hardest part of writing your story? The hardest part of this story was getting into Brooke’s frame of mind. Brooke is autistic, and I never wanted the story to be about her Autism and how she overcome it to fall in love.

Nemma Wollenfang
Mostly it just flowed. You know when you get an idea in your head and you just can’t let it go, you have to keep typing? Yeah, it was one of those. I guess the hardest part was finishing it in time (as I started quite late).

Claire Devon
Although I wanted to write about two fantasy folklore beings not normally written about it did require more research into their cultures and their (imagined) characteristics. I wanted to keep the Abada true to his legend and the Aloja true to hers. It's always fun to investigate other places and people but I want to be careful to portray them properly and respectfully. It's not like if I'm writing about something occurring in Los Angeles in the movie business—I know that quite well—it's investigating countries I've never visited with paranormal beings I'd never heard of before I started the story. That was fun, but hard.
