“Nicole!” Kayla fumbled in her bag for her phone. She never should have turned off the light in the first place. The fear in her boss’s voice took her by surprise. Never in her wildest dreams—and she’d had plenty of those—did she think the indomitable Nicole Halstead would be afraid of anything, much less something as harmless as being stuck in a dark elevator. The woman was a Titan of commerce. A ballbuster. Kayla had fantasized about reducing her to a quivering mass, but not like this.

She was no stranger to a woman’s fear, but it was usually something planned and meted out in small increments—as she chose. Not to mention, the person experiencing the fear did so willingly. This was completely different. Stay calm. Only one panic-stricken woman allowed per stuck elevator. Kayla took a deep breath to steady her hands. In no time, her fingers closed around her phone then light flooded the small compartment.

Her boss stood in the far corner, hands fisted and trembling beneath her chin, her eyes wide and her face pale.

“Are you okay?” Under the right circumstances, Kayla loved to see a woman’s fear, knew how to handle it, but this?

“I’ve got to get out of here.”

The panicked woman cowering in the corner was not the same person Kayla had grown to respect over the last few months. “We’ll be out of here soon. Relax.”

She checked the battery life on her phone. They had a half hour, maybe a little more, she judged, depending on how much juice the flashlight app used. Turning it off wasn’t an option. Using her foot, she scooted her purse into a corner then bent and placed the phone on top so the light illuminated as much of the car as possible.

“Can’t…. Out…. Let me out.”

Her boss’s breathless demand did nothing to ease Kayla’s concern. She had to get Nicole’s mind off their confinement—get her thinking about something else, something more pleasant. “It’s okay. We’ll be out soon. While we wait, why don’t you tell me about your vacation? Where did you say you were going?”

Nicole’s gaze remained fixed on the door. Her lips vibrated as she struggled to get a grip on her fear. “M-Maui. Saphros.”

Kayla froze. Surely she’d misheard. Saphros on Maui was one of the most exclusive lesbian-only resorts in the world, known for their women-only policy, but it was rumored they catered to all levels of kink as well. It was high on her bucket list of places to go if she ever won the lottery.

“I’ve got to get out of here.” Nicole lunged forward. Wedging her fingers into the seam between the doors, a sound ushered from her lips sounding more like a wild animal caught in a trap than a human.

Kayla reached for her. Grabbing her arms from behind, she tried to pull her away from the door. Nicole wrenched out of her grasp and spun around. Eyes wide with terror, she clawed at her blouse, managing to tear the neckline before Kayla could stop her.

Shit. She had to do something before Nicole hurt herself. She’d seen panic attacks before. Subs, eager to please, would refuse to use their safeword and end up in over their heads. Confidence and a clear head were called for. Could this circumstance be much different?

You can do this. Put on your big girl panties and take control. Forget she’s your boss, and put an end to this shit.

Squaring her shoulders, Kayla let go of the tight leash holding her dominant side in check. “Stop it right now, bitch!”

Nicole’s hands stilled. Her eyes focused on Kayla. And there it was—that flash of recognition. The woman knew a thing or two about submitting. Wasn’t her boss just full of surprises today?

Blog Tour & Giveaway ~ The Hearts of Dragon, The Dragoons Saga, by Josh Vanbrakle

TheHeartsofDragonsTourBanner

The Hearts of Dragons, book two in the Dragoon Saga, is available NOW.
To celebrate, I'm going to be spotlighting both books that kick off this epic new trilogy today!

The Wings of Dragons

From fantasy author Josh VanBrakle comes an epic new trilogy of friendship, betrayal, and explosive magic. Lefthanded teenager Iren Saitosan must uncover a forgotten history, confront monsters inspired by Japanese mythology, and master a serpentine dragon imprisoned inside a katana to stop a revenge one thousand years in the making.

Lodian history declares lefthanded people chaotic, dangerous, and devil-spawned, but Iren, the kingdom’s only known Left, thinks that’s an exaggeration. Sure, he loves pranking the residents of Haldessa Castle, but that’s harmless fun to get a little attention.

When one of his stunts nearly kills Lodia’s charismatic heir to the throne, Amroth Angustion, however, Iren confronts a no-win choice. To avoid execution, he must join a covert team and assassinate a bandit lord. The mission is suicidal, and Iren’s chances aren’t helped when he learns that his new katana imprisons a dragon’s spirit, one with a magic so powerful it can sink continents and transform Iren into a raging beast.

Adding to Iren’s problems, someone on the assassination team is plotting treason. When a former ally launches a blood-soaked plan to avenge the Lefts, Iren finds himself trapped between competing loyalties, and the fates of two nations will depend on his choice.

Seven months ago nineteen-year-old Iren Saitosan saved the continent of Raa, but victory had its price: his Dragoon transformation left him unable to use magic. In a culture that relies on spells just to open doors, the impairment has crippled him. Unwilling to live dependent on his friend Minawë, Iren departs in search of a cure.

Meanwhile, Minawë faces a greater loss. She had to watch her mother’s murder, and she has yet to overcome her grief.

She will have to find the strength to move on, though, because a ruthless pair is hunting Iren. They know about the Dragoon, and they’ll stop at nothing to gain its power. If they succeed, they’ll plunge Raa into its most devastating war in a thousand years. Only Minawë can rescue Iren before that happens. But even if she finds him in time, a secret from the past may turn him against her.

About Josh VanBrakle

Josh_VanBrakle_AuthorJosh VanBrakle is the author of the perfectly logical combination - to him, anyway - of epic fantasy novels and environmental non-fiction. Born in Pennsylvania, Josh grew up in Hershey, Chocolatetown USA. He now lives in the rural Catskill Mountains of upstate New York with his wife and two ill-behaved cats.

Josh grew up with a passion for both reading and the outdoors. His parents claim he learned to read using dinosaur books, because all the dinosaur names had phonetic spellings after them. From an early age he was telling and writing stories.

While the ideas for his first novel originated in high school, Josh set them aside to pursue a career in environmental protection. He might never have gone back to writing had it not been for a serendipity moment. He saw a newspaper article advertising workshops hosted by Shannon Delany, author of the 13 to Life series and the Weather Witch series. Thanks to those workshops, two years of hard work, and the incredible support of his family and coworkers, Josh's debut novel, The Wings of Dragons, was born.

Although Josh is now writing more than ever, he continues to work a day job at a local environmental nonprofit promoting rural land conservation. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, kayaking, nature photography, and generally being outdoors wherever and whenever possible.

To keep up to date with the latest in Josh's titles, including the Dragoon Saga, visit his website, or follow him on Twitter.

Synopsis

Fight.
It’s an action some encourage and others dissuade. Since the day I was born, fighting has been instilled into my mind. Regardless of your opinion, it’s something we all do. At some point in time, consciously or subconsciously—either emotionally, physically, or spiritually—we struggle. Many will strive to withstand their battles, but only those who were born to fight will overcome them.

A true fighter lacks weakness. They abstain from carelessness and refrain from trusting their opponents, but most importantly, they never accept defeat.

I am a true born fighter. Each second of every day, I fight. Rip the ones I love most away from me, I kill. If I’ve learned anything from this life, it’s to always expect the unexpected. As long as my heart continues to beat, and no matter the costs, I will be victorious.

Author Bio

I started writing at a very young age, mostly as an escape from the real world. It is something I have done on and off throughout my life, but never went so far as to actually try and get published.

I started my latest story, My Life As I Knew It, around 3 years ago. I was on a roll with it until I allowed life to get in the way. I am now officially picking up where I left off. It is the first book of a series on which I'm working.

I came up with the premise for this story while undergoing some pretty harsh challenges in my personal life. As mentioned before, I always liked writing as a means of escape. While going through these particularly tough times, I had a moment when I thought about what it would be like to go back in time and do certain things differently...which I'm sure almost everyone has thought about from time to time. I sat in front of my keyboard one morning, thought about what I would do if I had that chance and went from there.

Excerpt

He smiled and reached out to pull the guitar toward him. He strummed his fingers over the strings and played a few chords before glancing over at me proudly.

“Impressive.”

He offered me the guitar. “Your turn.”

“And what makes you think I can play?”

“Your bloodlines.”

I snorted out a laugh and clapped my hand over my mouth in horror.
“Play away,” he said, ignoring my snort, and pushed the guitar into my hands.

I stared down at it with my mouth hanging open. The way my heart raced you’d think he’d pulled the pin on a grenade and handed it to me. Relax Violet. It’s an instrument. It can’t hurt you. Unless I tripped over it and broke my neck. And that could happen. Probably not entirely realistic while I’m holding it, but if I dropped it and then got up and tripped, it … oh dear god, what is wrong with me?

His mom called out his name and he gave me an apologetic shrug. “I’ll be right back.”

He left the room and I remained where I was, the guitar still burning my hands. It had been months since I’d played. Months since I’d felt that wave of joy I got whenever my fingers ran over the strings.

A yearning, so strong it sent butterflies fluttering in my stomach, washed over me and my fingers moved. They ran over the strings, playing whatever came to mind. I closed my eyes and let myself be swallowed up by it all. I allowed myself to forget and be something else. Someone else.

I didn’t know how long I stayed like that but a shuffle behind me forced me back to reality. I opened my eyes and twisted around. Carter stood in the doorway, a look of wonder on his face and it made me squirm. I dropped my hands, rested the guitar on his bed, and scrambled to my feet. “I should go.”

He moved toward me slowly, as though scared a sudden movement would startle me. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing,” I mumbled and folded my arms across my chest, tucking my hands into my armpits where they’d be safe and wouldn’t stray towards anymore strings.

His brow creased and I saw him trying to work out what had happened but I didn’t want to talk about it. I tried to duck out of his room before he asked me anything. He gripped my arm, stopping my quick exit. “It’s okay,” he said. “You’re allowed to enjoy things. You’re not betraying your sister by having fun or doing the things you want to do.” His voice, filled with sincerity and kindness, caused a lump to take up residence in my throat.

His hand ran along my arm and towards my hidden hand. He tugged on it until he freed it and he squeezed my fingers gently. I shook my head because he’s right, but he’s wrong at the same time. It was guilt over Rose that stopped me doing things but when it came to music, there was so much more to it.

Music destroyed Gran’s life. It ruined Mom’s childhood. I couldn’t love something like that because if I did, I’d open myself up to the same hurt. And I’m not anywhere near as strong as Gran. It would destroy me. It would be my trigger.

I wanted to tell him that. I wanted him to understand. But the words wouldn’t come out of me.

Synopsis
I lived my life by two principles: order and excellence.
My moral compass steered me out of the slums of backwoods Tennessee and towards the woman I was destined to become, but not without gathering a few skeletons along the way.

Eventually, I found success, but my restless, relentless nature still left me feeling unsatisfied.

Then I met a ghost of a man.

At first, I was sure Daniello was a figment of my imagination, a beautiful and dangerous apparition with a fat cock and an animalistic hunger. He threatened my control and need for order, and in his absence, I became more haunted by my past.

He wanted me submissive. I wanted to know him.

Then my ghost met my skeletons.

Review
Taylor appears to have to all on the surface, but there are secrets that she's been hiding. Secrets she is not willing to share. Secrets that are better left in the dark. At least that is the way she feels and how she wants to keep it. She's been going to The Rabbit Hole looking for someone to excite her, control her, top her. But no one has ever caught her eye until he walked in.

Daniello is a man with his own secrets but his take control, take no prisoners personality is a force to be reckoned with. He's noticed Taylor and finds her captivating. So after some very sultry interactions, he makes an offer to "spend time" with her, an offer she is finding very hard to say no to. Daniello has that effect on her, but with his seductive stare and alpha magnetism, I'd find it hard to say no to him as well.

Their give and take relationship is scorching. Several cold showers are needed after their encounters! Wow!!

But secrets never stay in the past and Taylor's are about to be exposed, but being the tough woman that she is, she goes it alone. This isn't Daniello's problem. Too bad he doesn't see it that way. And after all is said and done, Taylor thinks her life is finally back on track but little does she know, her trial and tribulations have just started.

Seriously, Angelica has an ability to draw a reader into a story and never let you go. This is by far my favorite so far. The characters are enchanting, captivating, sexy as hell. Their lives are complex, mysterious, intriguing. Their chemistry is electric, so much so that it sizzles your fingers as you turn the pages. As more is learned about Taylor, the more you appreciate the person she has become. The little we learn of Daniello, keeps us entranced in his mysterious revelations.

And that cliffhanger? Oh my goodness!! What the?? I did not see that coming! That only will keep me waiting on baited breath to see what happens next.

If you are a fan of Angelica's, then you will love this book. If you are new to Angelica's, then hang on for the ride of your life!
