Synopsis

A shadow meets the light …

When someone needs to disappear, the Chicago mob calls on Joe Rossi. A man who can move without a sound, and kill without a word, they don’t call him the Shadow for nothing.

This time, it’s a New York crime family in need of his skills, but it takes one glimpse of her to make him agree to the job.

Liliana Marcello is every inch a principessa della mafia. Her life has taught her to be wary of strangers, yet her ballet career contradicts everything by putting her on display.

It’s a man with a dark smile and a constantly changing demeanor that makes her feel safe again, but it’s the unknown that holds her back.

It takes one look …
One dance …
One word …
One smile to captivate a man.

And one second to kill a woman because of it, too.

Not all monsters hide in the shadows.
How are you supposed to see them coming?

Excerpt

“Drink?”

Liliana made a face. “You know, I probably shouldn’t.”

“Ah, dancer.”

She shrugged. “Everything needs to be exactly as they want it.”

“As long as one of the things they want isn’t for you to starve yourself, or work yourself dead then … whatever makes you happy, Tesoro.”

“Some girls do.”

“Hmm?”

“Starve themselves down to nothing but sticks in the hopes of being noticed, or whatever the case may be. Their brains and mind get so sick from it all that they don’t even realize how much they need help. It’s sad, really. Scary. Once, I might have been one of those girls, too. Not so much anymore.”

Joe glanced down at the glass of whiskey he had poured, and twirled it a bit making the ice inside click against crystal. “Can’t say that’s a bad thing, though.”

“No, growth is … good.”

“It can be.”

Joe kept his gaze on the whiskey, and Liliana suddenly decided to be a little bold. They weren’t outside where anyone could see, or where her sister was right there to watch and make her feel nervous. There was no stumbling over her words, or feeling skittish.

Really, Joe didn’t make her anything but comfortable.

And a little hot sometimes.

Crossing the distance between them, Liliana came to stand right in front of Joe. It was only then that he finally glanced up from the glass in his hands to give her one of his slow, easy grins. The kind that made her stomach do that weird clenching thing—like butterflies for big girls.

“Hey,” she whispered.

Joe tipped his head to the side a bit. “Hey.”

“Thanks for helping me today.”

“Don’t mention it.”

“Lucky you were there to help me, really.”

Joe quirked a brow high. “Yeah, lucky.”

Before Liliana could over think her next move, and while she was still feeling that bit of boldness in her heart, she stood on her tiptoes, and kissed Joe. It was a fast kiss—nothing too spectacular, and certainly not lingering. Just a sweet press of her lips against his, and then she was pulling away again.

As fast as it had happened, it was over.

Then, she waited.

For him, that was.

Joe’s gaze darted to hers, and she swore she saw a flash of heat behind his eyes. Without ever looking away from her, he set that glass of whiskey to the wet bar, grabbed her waist with a firm grip, and brought her even closer. She didn’t even get the chance to take a breath before he kissed her.

His kiss was not like hers.

Deeper, harder, and hungrier. A teasing stroke of his tongue against the seam of her lips, demanding she open up to him, and let him in. She couldn’t even help herself but to part her lips, and taste him.

Joe pulled her closer still until her chest was molded against his, and she found it hard to take in a decent breath. And only then did he pull away. His hand came up to cup her cheek, and his thumb stroked her cheekbone with a soft touch.

“I mean, if you’re going to kiss me,” he murmured as he pulled away, “then at least really kiss me, Liliana.”

She laughed breathlessly. “I wanted to see …”

“What?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you see whatever it was?” he asked.

Liliana grinned widely. “I did.”

“And?”

“Would you like to go out with me sometime, Joe?”

Synopsis

coz-en (kuz-uhn)
verb
1. trick or deceive.
• obtain by deception.

She was named most appropriately.

Cozen Taylor has more than earned her place as one of North America’s most successful thieves. Her name is whispered amongst criminal elite as the go-to thief when someone needs a heist.

She has never failed.

A call from the Miami-based Astor family could change all that with a job that seems almost impossible to complete. The mark should be simple—a stolen family heirloom, the man who has kept it hidden for over twenty years, and six months to return the piece to its rightful owners.

Nothing is ever that easy.

Three-hundred million for a successful heist. No smart thief would turn the offer down. Cozen didn’t expect a complication like him to put a kink in her plans, though. Sargon Makri—tall, dark, gorgeous, and entirely dangerous. For her life, her heart, and for the success of the heist.

The last thing Cozen needs to be thinking about is Sargon, and how she can get him into her bed … especially when he just happens to be her mark’s bodyguard. The thrill of the job has never been more addicting to Cozen, and she will risk everything to make the heist a success.

But at what cost?

From author Bethany-Kris comes a whole new world. A North American network full of criminals battling to stay on top, and painting the streets red in war as they dabble in the game of betrayal. Malicious, cunning, forbidden, and violent—welcome to The Empires and Badlands.

Excerpt

The old woman had not looked away from Cozen yet. Her gaze would probably be unsettling to some, but Cozen was accustomed to people trying to figure her out. Like she was some kind of prize to be unwrapped if they could manage to get through her many layers.

“Tell me, girl,” the woman said, her wrinkles being all the more prominent as her gaze narrowed on Cozen. “Do you genuinely believe you are the best thief on this continent?”

Cozen didn’t even think about it. “I think I am one of the best, ma’am.”

“But not the best.”

“I was taught by the best. It would be incredibly rude of me to be so arrogant as to say I am better than them because they taught me. Isn’t that how it should work?”

“Grandmamma, be nice,” Remington told the woman as he slipped the cat from her lap, and put it to the ground. But not before the ball of white hell hissed and tried to bite the man on his arm. “There is a reason Ace suggested he take this job to Cozen.”

“She’ll get it done for you, Pearl,” Ace agreed. “Cozen is golden. Never had a failed job, yet.”

Wait.

This old woman was the one who called her for the job?

Damn.

It really did take all kinds of people to make the fucking world go around.

Fourth’s gaze slipped in Cozen’s direction, and with the narrowing of his eyes, she felt his disbelief about her presence make itself known once more. Although this time, he chose to keep it silent and not open his mouth.

Nonetheless, Cozen felt it.

She knew it.

Pearl peered up at Cozen with a slow smile. It was as though she could read Cozen’s mind, or maybe it was just the woman’s age who gave her insight to the people around her. Who knew what it was?

It was still unsettling.

“How old do you think I am, girl?” Pearl asked.

Cozen pressed her lips together. It was not nice to guess a woman’s age, and certainly not a woman whose face looked like weathered, pale leather. “I would say you have lived long enough to know it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to answer that question, Mrs. Astor.”

Pearl smiled. “You would be right. I am ninety-five. I have outlived my husband, three of my children, and six dogs. I am on my fourth Persian cat at the moment—you saw her. I call her Sweetness.”

“She did not look very sweet.”

“Because she isn’t. I like to surprise people.”

“You’re older than the Queen of England.”

Pearl nodded. “And richer than the bitch, too, darling.”

Cozen smiled widely, unable to stop herself. Laughter lit up the estate from the men. None of them seemed particularly surprised by Pearl’s quick wit.

She learned something in that moment.

Age meant nothing.

“Shoo,” Pearl said to the gathered men. She flicked a jewel-covered hand. “Leave us alone for a while.”

“Grandmamma,” Remington started to say.

“Oh, go, Rem. I can do this myself.”

Fourth and Ace were already pushing out of their chairs without needed to be told. Pearl and Remington the Third passed another look between one another before the man followed behind his son, and the broker he called in for this deal.

Or rather, the broker Pearl called in.

“Sit,” the old woman said, gesturing at the seat across from hers.

Cozen sat. “I hear you need a thief.”

“So, what is your grand fucking plan now?”

“Well, that wasn’t my plan to begin with. It was yours—it didn’t work really well for us.”

“Keep taking those shots at me, man.”

Darren rolled his eyes. “I mean, let’s go at them from a different direction. From behind, in a way. Make it hard for them to do business. Rough up the streets where their Capos have control. Step in between their contacts keeping things under control.”

For a long while, silence stretched on between the two brothers.

Then, Kev spoke. “I like it.”

“Thought you would.”

“You know, I got word someone saw Johnathan Marcello around here shortly before the fire started,” Kev said.

Darren cleared his throat. Out of the corner of Siena’s eye, she saw Darren look in her direction before going back to the conversation at hand.

“That so?” he asked.

“Apparently.”

“Anything else?”

“So far, the investigator agrees an accelerant was used, and they’ve called it an arson.”

“Just like my place,” Darren muttered.

“But hey, we know who probably did it,” Kev said.

“Yeah, I guess so.”

“We’ll get him.”

“Among many,” Darren agreed. “For now, though, where do we live?”

Kev laughed dryly. “Well, Ma wants me over there. You, too.”

“For a while, that’s fine. But you know how it is.”

“That won’t work with Siena, though,” Kev put in. “She’s the one handling Greta and Giulia, you know what I mean?”

“Ma won’t have Dad’s bastards going in and out of her house all the time. She puts on a good show, sure, but—”

“She’ll only take so much.”

“You could just say fuck the girls for now,” Darren offered. “Focus on everything else.”

“I need them compliant, just in case.”

“Sure, sure.”

“Siena’s enforcer said she did well while we were gone—never acted out of line.”

Siena smiled at that—faintly so it couldn’t be seen. All the while, she never looked away from the men cleaning up the mess that was once her brother’s home.

Good things were coming her way.

She could tell.

“She’s still got her apartment, too,” Kev added quietly. “A couple of months there with an enforcer looking after her won’t be a big deal. I even got the guy to check on the building—there’s an apartment available two doors down from hers.”

“You’re going to send her back to her place?” Darren asked, incredulity coloring his tone. “After everything she did with Johnathan, and even after Ginevra?”

“We don’t know that she helped Ginevra—”

“Suspecting is more than enough in this case, Kev! You’re fucking crazy to let her out of your sight, and you know it.”

“I have to,” Kev grumbled, “for now, anyway.”

Siena smiled wider.

That time, she hid it by looking up at the bright sky.

Good things had come for her.

Excerpt

“Quite a show back there,” he told her.

Catherine’s gaze narrowed. “You were watching me … following me?”

“Zeke—do you remember him?—owns this club, Catherine. I happened to be upstairs in the corner when you came in. You didn’t see me. I had my back turned. Zeke let me know you were there, that’s all. I didn’t intend to follow you until I heard the guy say something about looking for you when you skipped out. I just came to check—”

“To what, protect me?”

Cross scoffed. “Apparently, you do that just fine on your own, babe. He never would have picked his cock, by the way.”

“No man ever does.” Catherine let her knife drop to her side. “Quit smirking like that.”

His lips quirked at the corner again. “Am I?”

Cross.”

“If you’re already here, can I buy you a drink?”

Catherine looked away. “I don’t drink.”

He should know that, after everything.

“Good,” Cross said, reaching out to stroke her cheek with two fingers. Anyone else, and Catherine would have pulled away. It was habit and instinct and love that made her punish herself by letting him touch her and enjoy it. “Then have a dance with me. You still dance, don’t you? I loved that, Catty.”

She shivered in her heels, confused and overwhelmed all at the same time. Invisible butterflies beat inside her stomach and into her throat. She hadn’t felt that sensation since she let this man take her virginity when she was sixteen.

“You don’t speak now?” Cross joked.

Catherine let out a soft exhale, and met his dark gaze. “I was told by someone to do what felt right where you were concerned.”

He chuckled. “What do you mean, someone?”

Cara.

Her therapist.

She didn’t tell him that.

“Someone,” Catherine repeated. “The problem is, Cross, every fucking thing feels good and right with you, and you can’t even help it.”

“But is it really a problem when it’s like that for us?”

Yes.

“Let me save us both some time here,” Catherine said, knowing exactly where this whole thing would take the two of them. “Let’s pretend like we danced, but don’t. Let’s act like we talked, you were arrogant, charming, and good-looking, because you are. Except we actually won’t talk at all. I didn’t bring my car; I took a cab because it’s easier. So you can drive me back to your place because you are not coming to mine. We’ll fuck, and there you go. That’s what’s going to happen anyway, Cross, because it just will. Let’s save time and nonsense, and go.”

He cocked a brow.

Catherine just stared at him. “Well?”

“All right,” he murmured.
