The daughter of the Xenian emperor, Julietta never meant to fall in love with a Terran man while visiting Earth. Leaving to fulfill her responsibilities on her home planet opened up a hole in her heart that could never be filled. When March, now a cyborg, unexpectedly shows up just before she is to be bonded, she struggles to find the courage to turn him away a second time and follow through with her duty. Before she can act, the lovers are thrust into a political conspiracy that threatens the Xenian empire and their lives.

Excerpt

Leaving had carved a hole so deep and wide it could never be filled. She averted her gaze. “I said I was sorry.”

“On my PerComm. Yeah, I got the message.”

“It was the only way.”

“No, it wasn’t the only way.” He glared. Terran eyes were so expressive, revealing every emotion. “Another option would have been to tell me the truth, face-to-face, to wake me the fuck up and say, “Gotta run. See, ya!”

Not an option. Because if she had, she never would have been able to leave at all.

“I made some mistakes,” she said. Going to Terra counted as the first one. Then she’d gotten involved with March. As powerful as falling in love had been, it hadn’t bestowed her with the courage to face her father and her family, the council, the seer, her people, her consort-to-be, and confess she didn’t want to come back or become empress. She desired to marry a Terran and have half-alien babies, if that was even possible. She’d had the weight of an entire world, a millennium of history on her shoulders, and she’d caved to duty, leaving while she could still do so.

“Yeah,” he said. “Me, too.” Meaning her. She was his mistake. She had earned his anger, but his bitterness dripped like acid on an already-wounded heart.

Tears welled in her eyes and trickled over her lower lids. They would leave black streaks down her cheeks, across the carefully designed whorls decorating her face. Incongruously, she wondered how long it would take for the design to fade without the act of sexual congress to activate her hormones. How long would be she marked as the almost bride?

“I deserved that,” she said, steeling her courage because she owed him an explanation. She twisted her hands. “I had to go. My father seems benign and doting, but he would have invaded Terra, stormed the university, and dragged me home.”

A small smile quirked at the corner of March’s mouth. “Having met your father and experienced his ‘hospitality,’ I believe you. The emperor is not a man to cross. Why didn’t you tell me who you were at the beginning?”

“Because, for once in my life, I wanted to be anonymous.”

“No one would have treated you any differently. They would have been surprised, at first, but after the curiosity wore off, you could have been that—just another college kid.”

“I would have known, and it would have changed everything.” She would have lost those precious, rare times when for a few moments, she did forget her station and duty. Oh, how she had loved cramming for exams, arguing and grousing in study groups, eating bad food, staying out too late with other students, the hustle and bustle of campus life, her one and only spring break spent at a beach town where she’d become inebriated. Shitfaced, the Terrans called it, which sounded worse than it was, because she’d loved the experience. It was so very…Terran.

Hey, Jules, you want to grab a cup of coffee? Hey, Jules, can you share your notes? Hey, Jules, there’s a party Saturday night. Hey, Jules, hey, Jules, hey. Jules. Oh, the sweet, sweet sound of it.
And then came March, who sought out her company not because he’d been chosen by the seer, but just because. And that was the sweetest of all.

Until the heartbreak. Her affair with anonymity had exacted a steep price.

“Would you have gotten involved with me if you had known my identity?” she asked.

Review

When you are born with the weight of the world on your shoulders, the pressure can cause anyone to buckle. So when Jules got the opportunity to study abroad, she couldn't have been happier. To learn a new culture, make new friends, and be someone she isn't is everything she ever wanted. Just when she least expected it, lighting stuck and she meets a man that captivates her in way no other man ever has. They begin a sultry affair and feeling start to grow, but after awhile Jules runs away in the middle of the night unexpectedly.

Years have past, but March has never forgotten the girl that got away. When a chance to visit the world that his Jules is from, he jumps at the chance to try to find her just one more time. What he didn't expect was to come face to face with her in the most surprising of ways.

He should walk away and never look back, but his draw to her undeniable. And when they find themselves alone, their magnetism is unequivocal. However, just as they are getting reacquainted a problem occurs that put them in a position where their life could be in danger.

Will they be able to find out the people involved and make things right? And if they do find out the who and why, will they be able to stay together or be forced to part again?

Claimed by the Cyborg is a stunning, thrilling, emotional journey that will pull at your heartstrings and keep you on the edge of your seat. I really enjoyed the fact that this couple have a history and it's that history that makes them who they are today. Even after everything that March has been through, he's still the man Jules knew all those years ago.

I loved that even though Jules may not have wanted to rule her world, she always knew her heart and even years later, her heart was still true. She always put her family and her people above her wants and desire, that says a lot about who she is. March is the same way, just when he wants to walk away because he's been hurt but Jules' actions, he still comes back to her.

I really enjoyed this latest edition to the Cy-Ops series. It's a fast paced page turner that will take you on a journey to another world filled with passion, heart, and a dramatic story line. I can't wait to see where the next book in this series will take us next.

The only thing more dangerous than a suicide mission is falling in love…

Amanda Mansfield has faced challenges in her life: the disapproval of her critical father and the near-fatal accident that ended a promising military career and resulted in her transformation to cyborg. Now a Cyber Operations field agent, she volunteers to lead the most dangerous Cy-Ops mission ever: infiltrating enemy territory to find the secret hideaway of a terrorist mastermind. The last thing she needs is an added complication.

Like him. Sonny Masters. Her partner. A streetwise former thug turned cyber operative with a lethal grin who doesn’t understand she’s charge and does not require his protection. He’s everything she dislikes—and everything her body wants.

If they can keep their hands off each other long enough to complete the mission, they might just get out alive…

Trapped with the Cyborg (Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance 4) is a standalone read.

Review

Sonny Master is the type of cyborg you could call the strong silent type. He's list of those he calls friends is smaller than the length of his arm. So as a private man, those missions that one would consider a suicide mission are the ones that he's first to volunteer for.

Amanda Mansfield is a woman on a mission, prove that a female cyborg is just as strong and capable as a male cyborg. Having never made her father proud of her accomplishments, she pushes herself to into one dangerous situation after another. When she sets her mind to something, there is no stopping her. And this next mission just may the most impossible on yet.

Amanda may be in the lead agent on this mission, but Sonny's protectiveness will reach new heights as feelings he never expected to have grow with every second he spends with the hard headed, strong willed, beauty that is Amanda. If only they can get out of this mess alive.

This book is something special, in more ways than one. Unlike the previous books, this couple got together before they knew they would be working together. They acted on their mutual attraction, which was carried into their mission. Their passion drives them on the mission and into each other's arms. Their desire to have a future outside of their job sustains their arduous trek behind enemy lines.

I loved that each are strong, independent, and like things their own way. They stand for what they believe in, even if the other is exasperated by it. But it's the intensity of their love that will keep you captivated until the end. Theirs is a love that knows no bounds.

Excerpt

He signaled the android and motioned to their empty glasses. “Bill these to my room.”

“I’m more than capable of paying for my own drink.” She huffed.

He confirmed with the android. “My tab.” He motioned for Amanda to lead the way out of the lounge. “We’ll work out the details later. We can arm wrestle for it.”

“Don’t think I couldn’t win.”

“If let you.”

“There’s a word for men like you.”

“Gentlemanly?”

“Chauvinist.”

“Why are you coming with me, then?”

“I didn’t say you don’t exude a certain raw, he-man charm.”

Amusement rumbled up from his belly in an explosion of genuine enjoyment. Son of a bitch, he wished he had more time. A rare pang of regret shot through him. Cy-Ops had been good to him, and he didn’t regret this career path, considering what his alternatives might have been. The lives of those he’d helped—were better for it. But, yeah, sometimes he wished he had a woman waiting for him. He had a hunch from this point forward, when he pictured that imaginary woman, she would have Amanda’s face.

“Thank you,” he said, and rubbed the scar cutting a bare swath through facial stubble.

“What happened?” she asked.

“The scar?”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t grow up in the best part of town. A gang of thugs who thought they were hot shit roamed the neighborhood, spoiling for a fight. They rarely had trouble starting one.”

“You were attacked?”

He shook his head. “I was one of them.” He traced the thickened, puckered skin. “I deserved this.” He’d omitted he’d started the fight in defense of his sister. It mattered little his motives had been inculpable that time. One good deed did not undo a multitude of bad ones. With his disreputable background, he hadn’t sought medical attention. His facial wound hadn’t healed properly, and he’d been left with a significant scar. Still, he’d survived life on the streets and emerged less scathed than some. Than his sister.

He fingered the souvenir of a misspent adolescence. “I’d like to say this ended my association, but I can’t. I was a slow learner, I guess.” Not to mention a thug. A gang member. A criminal.

“So, what got you out of it?” She halted and peered up at him. The top of her head would graze his chin if he were to hold her. Which he wanted to do. Horizontally, while she clenched around him. “I assume you’re out of it?”

“Yes. You’re not in any danger with me.”

“You don’t worry me.”

“Because you think you can kick my ass like you did the Malodonian?”

Guest Post & Review ~ Captured by the Cyborg, Cy-Ops Sci Fi Romance, by Cara Bristol

Sometimes the biggest risk is to one’s heart….

A science fiction romance by USA Today Bestselling Author Cara Bristol

An ex-Cyber Operations field agent, Dale Homme has kissed danger and betrayal more times than he cares to count. Now he runs a clandestine factory beneath the surface of the moon Deceptio, where confidentiality and security matter more than anything. When a beautiful young woman arrives seeking a job, Dale knows within minutes she’s lying. Everything about her is false: her past, the people she claims to know, her reason for being on Deceptio. Illumina Smith? Even her name is an alias.

Logic says send her packing. His gut says she’s in trouble. She needs him. So he’ll do anything to keep her safe….even if it means keeping her captive.

Captured by the Cyborg is third in the Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance series but is written to be read as a stand-alone novella.

Captured by the Cyborg is available in ebook and paperback.

An interview with Illumina Smith of Captured by the Cyborg
by Cara Bristol

Cara Bristol: I hear you accepted a new job. A computer troubleshooting position with the Moonbeam spacecraft remanufacturing factory. Congratulations.

Illumina Smith: Thank you. It surprised me when I received an offer. I got the impression Dale Homme, the boss, didn’t think I was right for position.

Cara: Why would you think that?

Illumina: The way he kept squinting at me like he suspected everything I told him was a lie. But I can’t blame him. Everything I told him was a lie.

Cara: You falsified your credentials?

Illumina: Everything on my CV was false except for my age. Even my name is an alias.

Cara: Why would you do that?

Illumina: I needed a safe place to hide. Moonbeam is located a kilometer underground on the moon Deceptio.

Cara: So you’re not qualified to work on spacecraft?

Illumina: I didn’t say that. My qualifications are that I don’t need qualifications. I’m a computer sensate. A computer system doesn’t exist that I can’t hack.

Cara: But what if Dale Homme finds out you falsified your resume?

Illumina: He won’t. I plan to avoid him as much as possible, anyway. When I shook his hand at the interview, I discovered he’s a cyborg, a scientifically enhanced human. He has a microprocessor in his brain. Cyborgs and computer sensates do not mix. For his safety, I need to keep my distance.
Excerpt

(This an excerpt of Illumina’s job interview from the Dale Homme’s POV)

“Do you understand how isolated you’ll be if I hire you for this position? You won’t be able to leave the facility until your furlough. You’ll work here—and live in the employee barracks. For months at a time, you won’t see sunlight, hear a bird chirp or an insect sing, or feel the wind on your face. You’ll be stuck with the same people day in and day out—and, by the way, there will be no natural rotation to mark the time. Day and night are controlled by artificial lighting and work schedules. The only visitors to Deceptio are pre-approved buyers or sellers. For security reasons, you won’t be permitted contact with any outsiders, including your family.”

Her lips twitched with a slight smile. “You make it sound so appealing.”

“Many people can’t handle the isolation. We lose a lot of good employees to moon fever.” He opened up a hailing frequency in his cyberbrain and fired off a couple of messages.

“That won’t happen with me, Mr. Homme.”

“They all say that,” he said.

She leaned forward. “I mean it.”

Why would a young woman leave a prestigious, lucrative job to live in an artificial environment beneath the surface of a barren moon? Moonbeam paid as much if not more than Infinity, and offered generous leave, but that was the extent of the perks. For a programmer starting out in her career, Infinity was the better choice. Which led him to believe she was running from something, rather than to something. “Tell me about your educational background.”

She eased back, but her spine didn’t touch the frame of the chair. “I graduated with honors from TCI.”

“I got that from your CV. What was your favorite class?”

“I was on the computer security track, but I also mastered all the computer languages.” A response, but not the answer to his question.

Ping! Ping! Both his messages came back with replies. He read them while continuing the interview. Multitasking was a cinch for a cyborg. “You must have taken Professor Annabel Harriot’s class. She’s a friend of mine.”

Illumina nodded, her face flashing that luminescence that caused her to glow like a pearl. “I learned so much from her. She’s….tough, but respected.”

“So you think you can handle this job?”

“I’m confident I can.”

“And the isolation?”

“Won’t be a problem.”

“If I were to offer you the position, when could you start?”

“Immediately. I, um, brought my suitcase. I don’t even need to return home.”

Interplanetary hiring laws dictated what an employer could or couldn’t ask a prospective job seeker. Dale knew the rules, but he hadn’t gotten where he was by following them. Cyberoperatives worked outside the law, as did spacecraft chop shop owners, so he had no qualms about asking whatever he needed to gather the necessary info to facilitate his decision. “What species are you exactly?”

“Ter—” She dropped her gaze to her lap, where her hands locked together. She raised her eyes and bit her lip. “Faria,” she admitted in a low voice.

It was one of the few truths she’d uttered during the entire interview.

Annabel Harriot did not exist; he had made her up. The professor was as fictitious as the qualifications on Illumina’s CV. His contacts at TCI and Infinity had reported they’d never heard of Illumina Smith. To their recollection, she’d never attended the institute or been employed by the AI corporation.
Review

Dale Homme made a life skirting the law with Cyber Operations, but now that he is retired, he runs a chop shop on the moon Deceptio. He still skirts the law but life is a lot less dangerous and a bit more mundane. Sure life still has it's treacherous encounters, however something is missing and he can't pinpoint what it is exactly.

Illumina Smith is running from her past and her running had led her to Deceptio. She hopes to hide out for awhile until it is time to move on. Life on the run isn't what she dreamed of, but circumstances have led her down this path.

Dale can tell by looking at Illumina that she's lying, but there is something about her that he can't let go of. Maybe by keeping her around, he'll be able to find out what she is hiding and possibly help her.

But his body's reaction is beginning to cloud his judgement when it comes to her. He's never been like this with anyone, what it is about her that calls to him? However, he's not the only one having issues, Dale has awaken something in Illumina and she can't seem to shut it down.

As time goes on and the more time they spend together, Illumina starts to trust Dale and confide in him her problems. Dale vows to protect her at all costs, but he's going to be away for a few days so he call in reinforcements. With all the security measures in place, what could go wrong?

Everything since the person they least expected to deceive them just put them all in jeopardy. So can Dale make is back in time to save Illumina before it's too late?

Jesus, Buddha, Lao-Tzu! Cara has another thrilling hit on her hands! Dale Homme is the hero worth swooning over and over again. He's tall, dark, handsome, protective, and oh so sexy. And when he's committed, he's all in heart and soul. Making sure his lady love is happy and protected is paramount to him. He'll melt your heart right along with your panties.

Illumina is stronger than she gives herself credit, it takes fortitude to run and fight for her life. And when she sees an issue with security, I love her sense to protect those around her even without their knowledge. And when she's taken hostage, I love her resilience to fight for herself even if it means never seeing the one man she loves again.

This book is exhilarating and holds you captive until the end. The chemistry between Dale and Illumina is intoxicating on so many levels, you can't help but be drawn to them and want them to achieve their happily ever after. This quick read will leave you craving more for this sultry couple.

Kai Andros’s orders were simple. Get in. Gather the intel on the terrorist organization. Get out.

Then he met her. Mariska. Beautiful. Innocent. Ignorant of her father’s atrocities. And marked for death.

His orders said nothing about saving her. But he did. He went off-mission.

Can a rogue cyborg outrun both Cyber Operations and the terrorists to save the woman he loves?

Excerpt

Some might have cheered Mariska’s impending demise. The organization’s brutality had incited a backlash of negative sentiment against all its members. Many espoused the notion that the only good Lamis-Odg was a dead Lamis-Odg.

Kai couldn’t buy into that. Mariska had been no party to the actions of her father or Lamani. She was vulnerable. Innocent. But not stupid or cowardly. In the month spent observing her, her quiet fortitude and inner strength had impressed him. Even before he’d caught the shocking glimpse of her face, he’d been struck by her beautiful eyes. A rich shade of melted caramel, fringed by dark lashes. Expressive in their attempt not to be. She didn’t trust him.

Her wariness pierced him in a way it shouldn’t. She was a person of interest and her emotions shouldn’t impact his decision-making. And in fact, she was wise to be suspicious. Obido had bugged her quarters and employed spybots to keep tabs on her. While Kai wouldn’t intentionally harm her, he would manipulate her to obtain whatever information he could on Lamis-Odg.

The reign of terror had to be stopped.  Direct intervention in Mariska fate jeopardized that goal. Doing nothing was the right thing to do. Sacrifices had to be made for the greater good.

Why did he feel like he was no better than Obido?

When they rounded the corner to the gangway entrance two guards—Lamis-Odg, not androids—snapped to attention, weapons drawn. “Halt!” one of them cried.

“It’s okay; he’s with me,” Mariska said.

While one guard leveled his weapon, the other scanned him. “The android is not authorized to board,” the guard said.

“He’s not boarding; he’s loading my luggage. He’ll disembark after he carries it to my stateroom.”

“Negative. He shall remain here.” The guard motioned. “Leave the cases.”

Kai set the bags down, and the sentry scanned them. “Clear,” he announced. He jerked his head at Mariska. “You may take them now.”

She dragged one toward the craft.

“My duty is to serve the daughter of Obido. Allow me to set the bags inside the door. I shall not enter,” Kai said.

The two guards glanced at each other and shrugged. “All right.”

Under armed watch, he deposited both bags inside the portal.  There was nothing else he could do.  He sought Mariska’s gaze. Don’t go. “Have a safe flight.”

“Thank you.”

She boarded. Kai stomped down the gangway.

Review

Mariska and Kai are stunning and their story is exciting.

Kai was sent to get intel on terrorists but the more time he spends with Mariska, something changes in him. And when Mariska is ordered by her father to what is essentially her death, he takes matters into his own hands.

Mariska is taken aback by Kai's actions and the information he relays to her. But can she believe him when everything she was taught growing up is in contradiction. And just when she thinks she is getting a handle on everything and the world around her shatters. Now the threat to both her and Kai are greater than ever.

Will the be able to make it out with their lives? Can Kai keep the secrets he knows away from the terrorists? And if they make it out, can Mariska and Kai make a go at a real relationship?

This is Cara's second book in her Cy-Ops Sci-Fi series and it is just was brilliantly written. The banter that Mariska and Kai share is electric. I loved watching Mariska grow into a strong woman after being a week, quiet, meek woman she was told to be. And Kai was easy to fall for. He knew his mission, but I loved that he followed his heart instead.

This book will pull you in with the intriguing plot and a love story that pull at your heartstrings. I would recommend this story to all romance readers, not just those that love sci-fi.

Her father pushed back his chair and patted Janai’s head before rounding on Mariska.

She dropped her gaze to the floor. Her stomach was already there. Show no fear. Show no fear.

“Stand up,” Obido ordered.

She attempted to rise, but her feet tangled in her skirt. R981’s arm shot out as if to keep her from stumbling.

“What are you doing?” Obido glared at the android.

“I am performing my duty and assisting her,” he replied.

“Your duty is to report to me.” Her father confirmed what she’d suspected.

“She was about to fall.”

It sounded like R981 was arguing. The general must have thought too also, because his eyes narrowed on the android, but then he jerked his attention back to her. “Remove your scarf.”

No one had seen her face since she was a child teased to tears by her siblings. It had been a relief to be ordered to wear the veil to spare the sensibilities of others and escape their horrified looks. While bathing, she avoided the reflection glass and its taunting reminder of her ugliness. Stomach clenching into a hard knot, she released the opaque fabric from one side of her headdress.

Her father grimaced, and Janai, who’d never seen her naked face, gasped.

Mariska held her head high and stared straight ahead.

HOLY HELL! KAI Andros almost fell over.  This was what Lamis-Odg considered deformed, ugly? Fortunately, his black contact lenses concealed most of his shock.  Intel intercepted by Cyber Operations had reported the fifth daughter of one of the most infamous terrorists had a “significant facial defect.” Her eight sisters had been married—mated was the term these people  used—but no one wanted her, fearing she would produce hideous offspring.

He hadn’t seen her face until now.

In the genetic game of chance, Mariska had been dealt a royal flush. She was fucking gorgeous.

Don’t gawk! A real android wouldn’t react, but as a cyborg, a red-blooded heterosexual man working undercover as a robot, how could he not?
