Every paramedic’s worst nightmare is to arrive at the scene of a horrific accident and find out that the victim is someone they love. Or, in Caden Ross’s case, the woman he used to love. It took two years to finally get over Dakota and move on with his life, or so Caden believed, until he has to face the thought of a world without her. Nothing could have prepared the handsome, headstrong off-duty paramedic for the emotional upheaval of keeping the woman he once thought would be his forever alive.

Dakota Martineau appeared to have the world in the palm of her hand. She is beautiful, kind, has an adoring family, including her best friend and identical twin sister. She has a passion for incorporating her love of life, family, and her cultural background into her dream job with special needs kids. Then, in a life-altering crash, she discovers just how fragile life is. Thankful to be surrounded by an incredible group of friends who will help heal, not just her body, but also her soul, she knows she should be happy she is alive and on the mend, but Dakota is still tormented by the loss of her one true love.

How can you feel safe with the one person who hurt you the most? What road will Caden and Dakota take when they discover fate wreaked havoc on everything they thought was true?

“Opening the door, he enquired, “What are you doing here, and where is your sidekick?”

“Brody is waiting downstairs. Are you going to ask me in, mate? We need to talk.”

“I wasn’t talking about Brody. I was talking about Koko.”

“If you’re trying to cause a kerfuffle, it won’t work.”

“Don’t have a clue what the hell you just said, but if you say we need to talk and without Brody or Koko, I’m thinking I’m going to need a beer.”

Edward followed him in. “It means a skirmish or a fight. And you might want something a little stronger. I bloody well do.”

If Caden had been more like his old self, that comment might have raised his hackles. Instead, he numbly grabbed his bottle of Jack and two tumblers before heading to his couch. He poured a generous amount in each glass then handed one to Edward.

“What do I owe for the pleasure of your company? What’s in the envelope?”

“All in due time, Caden. I hope you worked today and don’t have a shift later, because that is a generous amount of liquor you poured.”

“I’m off for the next four days, thanks for asking, Mother.”

“A little testy today?”

“Edward, get to the damn point. I’m not really up for a boys’ night.”

Edward made a show of looking around the room. “Where’s your girlfriend?”

Caden took another large sip and let the alcohol burn its way down to his stomach before he wheezed out, “Moved out a while ago.”

“Sorry, I didn’t know. What happened?”

Caden stood, beyond annoyed with all the questions. “If you must know and if it will get you out of my home sooner, she left me after she found out that I’m still in love with Dakota. Happy now?”

Edward’s face broke into a huge smile. “Actually, you couldn’t have said anything else that would make me happier.”

Leaning down and getting into Edward’s face, he replied, “You’re seriously starting to piss me off. Do you have a death wish or something? You do remember your bodyguard is downstairs, right? Say what you have to say and get out.”

Not intimidated one bit, Edward calmly responded, “Do I really have to mop your floors with your arse before I prove to you that I can and will take care of myself? Besides, after I tell you why I came here, I think you’re going to want to kiss my arse and not kick it. Now sit the fuck down and hear me out.”

Taken aback by the conviction in Edward’s voice, Caden obediently sat, taking another huge gulp of his drink. “Start talking.”

“I need some assurances from you first. What I am about to show you is going to mess with your mind, and I want you to be prepared. You have to keep your temper in check and think things through before you go off half-cocked. This involves a lot of people who I care about. They are going to be hurt enough without you adding fuel to the fire. That being said, do I have your word that you will stay calm and think about everyone involved?”

“How can I honestly give you my word if I don’t know what it’s about or how I’ll react?”

Fun Facts Related to Thicker Than Blood

1. When I developed the character of Dakota Martineau I had one person in mind and that was a young woman I saw on the show Say Yes to The Dress. Her name is Katie Allen and she works for Kleinfeld’s. She appears to be a beautiful on the inside as the outside. I never watch TV because I am an avid reader. I read one to two books a week. Someone in my house was watching the episode when Katie buys her own wedding dress and from that day on she became Dakota to me.

2. I have always intrigued in animal totems or the animal spirit that I think best represents the people I know. I have given my husband, all of my children and friends animal totems. I had to research real animal totems for this book and I found it fascinating. I have always believed my spirit animal is a sea otter. I love the water as much as the land. I love to cook and otter’s carry a rock to help assist with collecting food. They are very active parents and so was I with my four sons. They work hard and love to play hard. Yup I am a sea otter in spirit.

3. I love to travel. If you like to travel or just like to hear about places around the world I want you to get excited about travel when reading my books. In this book you will visit Toronto, The Smoky Mountains Tennessee, and Paris. I try to peak your interest enough that you go and visit some of these destinations. Hopefully I will give you locations to visit and things to see. If you are visiting anywhere try to research off the beaten path places and talk to the locals they are the best resources. Also ask or research about legends for places you visit, the stories you hear, will amaze you. Check out my website annemariecitro.com for pictures to destinations in each of my books.

4. I have always loved music but grew up loving rock and pop. For the first time in my life I am listening to country and loving it. The character in this book loves country music so I started to research country music. I started asking friends and family for their favorite country songs or artists. Wow I love my country playlist and continue to source new songs to fall in love with. While on my website you can listen to the playlist for the book while you look at the travel destinations in the book.

5. I had to research about strokes for this book. The information I learned help me to recognize and act when my mother was staying with me over Easter and had a massive stroke. It is amazing the amount of information I must have stored subconsciously and used it when I needed to. I like to think that because of Thicker Than Blood I knew what to do and saved her life.

Professor Nikos Angelopoulos is working with his Greek-Turkish team at a dig in Turkey when one day a young motorcyclist gets stranded: Sally from Ireland, fresh and charming and a bit flirty. Very soon the Professor finds out that, despite her temperament, she’s still very innocent and gullible, and he seems to develop fatherly feelings towards her, protecting her from the clear intentions of the young men at the camp.

Then she just happens to dig up a fragment of clay with an old Assyrian inscription in Hittite on it, and Nikos finds out that this inscription is the oldest one found so far in an Indo-European language. While celebrating their great find, Sally and Nikos discover their feelings for each other despite their age difference – but at the same time, an American millionaire turns up who wants to buy the clay fragment for his collection; and, although Nikos tells him it is a national treasure and not for sale, he won’t take no for an answer. He tries to convince Nikos to sell it to him, and when that plan fails he calls in his gunmen…

Amid their ever-growing passion for each other, Nikos and Sally now have got to face a dangerous and violent gang of artefact thieves together with their brave international team of archaeologists and workers. Who will win the showdown at Kanesh camp – and will this unusual relationship between a scientist of sixty and a young adventuress of not yet thirty stand the test of time?

Excerpt

Sally gets her first history lesson from Nikos

“Well, our work demands a lot of discipline,” the Professor explained while he sat down next to her with his cup of tea; “we start working at dawn, because the midday heat doesn’t allow us to work out in the open. I’m working in the treasure house, that’s what I call it” he added in a slightly embarrassed way, “with yesterday’s finds, which were plenty, and I’m waiting for the youths to tell me their opinion about my first evaluations; and maybe, at the trading place, they’ll find something really old sometime...” he said enthusiastically – and Sally asked, quite puzzled: “Well – I thought that all those things were old?”

“But of course, my dear child,” Professor Nikos smiled, and further explained to his young ‘pupil’ “Only there is a vast difference between a piece that is two thousand years old and one that is four thousand years old. Those finds can speak, if you understand what I mean. If one has learned their language, of course. The differences in the material, the style, the painting, the themes; right here on this spot there are items which give evidence about various quite different cultures, great empires that rose and fell or were destroyed, in the course of centuries. We know the more recent ones by heart, so to speak; anyone who has done three years of Ancient Greek or Latin at school can decipher the inscriptions; but the earlier cultures are still much of a mystery to us, and that is exactly what’s so suspenseful and fascinating about them. We don’t just assemble fragments of clay as if they were jigsaw puzzles; the whole history of mankind is like a giant jigsaw puzzle, and it takes a lot of patience and knowledge, and most of all curiosity, to try and assemble it. And there are still many pieces missing, and perhaps one or two of them are buried right here in the desert sand.”

The wise scientist’s speech had really made a great impression on Sally; and she admitted: “Gee, I’d never thought about it all like that... To me, history had always been just learning boring dates by heart.”

Fun Facts

Turks love Westerns and other old Hollywood movies; they start acting as if they were in a Western during the robbery attempt, and they discuss Gary Cooper and Steve McQueen…

Nikos’ assistants Katerina and Giorgos develop their feelings for each other as well; in their case, the age difference is the other way round: Katerina is 14 years older than Giorgos!

Nikos and Sally are both football fans: Nikos supports AEK Athens, and Sally supports Celtic.

Excerpt

Firefighters had prepared a pathway of sorts, using axes and pry bars to move lumber aside. It was small comfort, knowing they’d stick close by, ready to deal with sparks that might flare into flames as Cash’s nose led them to the elderly couple, trapped upstairs.

The men walked in a crouch, their flashlight beams crisscrossing the darkened interior. When they’d been inside about ten minutes, the guy out front said, “Missing floorboards here.”

The warning preceded another five minutes during which the only sounds were the crunch of glass and wood splinters beneath their boots. Then, the near-silence was shattered by Cash’s barking.

He’d found the couple.

The team followed the steady yapping to the stairs, and halted their approach.

“No way that’ll hold all of us,” one of the men said.

“Probably won’t hold any of us,” said another.

Ian moved forward. “I’ll go.”

The others didn’t argue. It made sense, after all, since Ian knew best how to read his SAR dog’s signals.

Concerned as he was about the condition of the people trapped up there, Ian made his way up, one cautious step at a time. Because if the staircase gave way before they even found them…

Cash met him at the top, tail straight out and ears up. The ceiling height made it necessary for Ian to crawl as the dog led the way. He’d only gone a few feet when he heard soft moans, a woman’s voice, weak and thready.

Despite being blanketed with plaster, splintered boards, and loose nails, she managed to croak out, “Oh thank God. Thank God.”

“Don’t talk,” Ian said, crawling up beside her. He took her pulse. It, too, was weak and thready. No surprise there, considering the amount of blood she’d lost.

He grabbed his radio. “Top of the stairs,” he said into it, “eight feet back, six to the right. Woman alive; still looking for the man.”

A voice crackled a reply: “Sending up a backboard.”

Ian carefully removed debris from the lady’s chest. With her hands and arms now freed, he said, “Ma’am, can you point out your husband is?”

One knobby-knuckled finger aimed left, toward a huge mound of rubble in a corner. Sure enough, a bloodied hand poked out from beneath the mess. If the guy survived that, it would be a miracle.

Creaking floorboards interrupted the morbid thought.

“The place is weaving and bobbing like a drunk,” the firefighter said, “and there’s barely a breeze outside.”

Ian had felt it, too. If they didn’t get out of here, and fast, all four of them could perish in this dismal place.

Working together, the men eased the woman onto the backboard. Not an easy feat, hunched in the confined space as they were.

“Husband’s over there against the back wall,” Ian said. “But we can’t risk bringing another guy up here.”

“Right. Let’s take her down and come back for him.”

Their bulk, added to the weight of the now-unconscious woman, caused the staircase squeal and screech. Nails, Ian knew, working their way out of the boards. The men kept moving down the failing staircase, Cash close on Ian’s heels.

“Took you long enough,” Mack teased when they reached fresh air.

“Bite me,” the firefighter joked back. “That place is like a house of cards. Somebody so much as sneezes, it’ll flatten like a pancake.”

Once he and Ian handed the woman off to the paramedics, Cash sat beside Ian.

“You’re done for the night, buddy,” he said, squatting to scratch the dog’s ears. “Good job. Real good job.” Straightening, he faced Alex. “If I don’t make it out, take him to my dad’s place.”

Mack winced. “Aw, shut up. You’re coming out.”

But everyone within earshot knew that wasn’t a given.

Fun Facts

Following his release from Lincolnwood, Ian—feeling lost and alone—spent hours rebuilding his Harley, piece by piece.

When an Autistic boy goes missing during a camping trip in the Allegheny Mountains, chaperone Maleah joins the search...with Ian and his SAR dog, Cash.

Ian Sylvestry loves his SAR work almost as much as he loves Cash, his trusted SAR dog...and Maleah, the love of his life.

Book Tour & Giveaway ~ Lyrics Heart & Soul, Sistas #2, by Anne Marie Citro

Ryder thought he was going to lose his mind.

Instead Francesca helped him find his heart & soul

Lyrics Heart & Soul Book Cover

Lyrics Heart & Soul
Anne Marie Citro
Series: Sistas Book 2
Genre: Contemporary Romance, New Adult Romance
Publication Date: December 4, 2016

One of America's most reclusive rockers, Ryder Vaughn, gets an unusual sentence handed down to him. The judge, hoping to teach him the value of human life, sentences him to ten months of community service at Reach Within Centre for individuals with special needs. Ryder is convinced that, if he isn't crazy already, he will be by the time his sentence ends. However, his only other option forfeits his band's livelihood.

Five minutes after stepping into the centre, his entire life changes when he meets a gorgeous, little spitfire who will challenge everything he has ever believed about himself and the world around him.

Francesca's devotion has always been to her family, friends, and the job she is passionate about. Her life hasn't been easy. She sacrifices a lot for the ones she loves and for her dream to visit Italy.

Then Francesca finds herself in a desperate situation, and the tattooed beast who is serving his debt to society must save the headstrong woman from a secret that could destroy her. In turn, Francesca teaches Ryder, if you love something enough, it's worth fighting for.

Ryder knows he isn't worthy of love, but this incredible beauty makes him want it.

Ryder can save Francesca from her secrets, but can she save him from his? Is Ryder strong enough to endure the kids she loves and her crazy Italian family?

Ten months can fly by or it can last an eternity.

"This beautifully written novel weaves a story of courage, independence and redemption while pulling on your emotional heart strings through music." ~ Annette Cosentino, Amazon Reviewer

Excerpt

Ryder slammed the steering wheel with so much force it should have shattered. “Fuck, Frank, you’re not listening. I hurt Francesca tonight! You should be beating the shit out of me, not trying to make me feel better. Ask her. She’ll tell you. I destroyed her tonight. She should never forgive me, but even Mason believes she will, and that’s not right.

“Save her, Frank. Show her what I truly am. She thinks she loves me, but she doesn’t know the real me. I’ll never be able to reciprocate her love the way she deserves. I’m a broken man she can’t put back together. Anyone who knew me never could love the real me. Do your job and protect your daughter; convince her it’s just hero worship. She doesn’t love me. She can’t. I won’t allow it.” Ryder lowered his face into his hands, rubbing it roughly. He needed to get through to this man, and he wasn’t listening.

Frank looked at the tortured soul beside him. “Do you love her, Ryder?”

The question deflated him. He didn’t want to reveal his crime without embarrassing and betraying Francesca’s trust.

“Yes, I’ve loved her since the day I saw her. But she can’t love me. She’ll only get hurt. I came to you for help. I need you to be there for her and protect her from me. Italian fathers are supposed to be ruthless when it comes to their daughters. Do your job! Stop the madness, Frank. Please, I’m begging you!”

“You may love my daughter, but you don’t think very highly of her.”

Ryder growled as he snapped his head towards the man, appalled and instantly pissed off by Frank’s words. Before he could rebut, though, Frank continued.

“Don’t assume she’s not smart enough to know what’s in her mind and heart. She’s a very smart girl. You can’t control someone else’s feelings, or tell them how to feel. They are her feelings, and you have no right to them.

“I’ve watched many young men bend over backwards for her attention, yet she was unaffected by them all. I knew it would have to be someone special to win her heart. You might not like yourself, but she loves you. Don’t discredit that because, if you do, you discredit everything she loves: her family, her friends, the children under her care, the paintings she creates, the food she makes. Don’t belittle her choices. Whatever happens is between you and Francesca. If she is hurting, I’ll be there to help her, but I won’t bad mouth you to my bambolina.”

Frank laid his hand on Ryder’s shoulder. “Don’t be angry at her for not seeing clearly. Maybe it’s you who isn’t seeing clearly. Look inside your heart and try to see what she does, not what you’ve been taught to see. It might surprise you.

“When Francesca chooses to love, she does it unconditionally. You of all people should know that. Go home to California and take the time to think. We all make mistakes. God knows I’ve made my fair share. In a loving relationship, you will make many mistakes, but without forgiveness, you cannot have true and lasting love. Learn to love yourself, son.”

"What I love about Citro is she puts so many beautiful life lessons in her books. This one focused a lot on special needs children and how everyone, especially those who are the hardest, need and deserve love" ~ Kristin Campbell, Goodreads Reviewer

Deleted Scene from Lyrics Heart & Soul

This is a deleted scene from the book that I didn’t want to let go of because I truly believed it showed growth in Ryder’s character. It is near the end and I thought Ryder was showing growth with how he viewed intimacy and that he could have a laugh with someone other than Francesca.

Please keep in mind this was cut from the first edit. So, there may be spelling mistakes, grammatical mistakes and general bad taste. Lol.

“Beauty, do you realize what you are seeing?” He smirked knowing she had yet to discover what she was really looking at.

“Yes of course, it has a blown glass figurine in the middle of it.” Francesca looked at him like he had lost his mind.

“Look closer and tell me what they are doing.”

Francesca carefully picked up the bottle and looked closer. “Oh, my freaking God, Ryder they are… No, it can’t be. Oh. My. God. They are in sexual position. Holy crap.”

Ryder laughed as Francesca blushed from head to toe. Although she was a tiger when the lights went out, she was a kitten with the lights on. Shy and embarrassed to talk sexually, or acknowledge sexual things. He was dying to take her into a sex toy store, but she would have to become more comfortable with her sexuality, before that happened. Francesca quickly put the bottle back on the self.

Ryder walked away to get the salesman. “I want eleven of these. Can please ship nine of them to Toronto and wrap one so I can take it with me, now. Francesca which ones do you want for your brothers?”

Francesca could have died a thousand deaths from embarrassment. “Ryder, you are not buying those for my brothers. And what the heck do you need ten for.”

“I want one of each position for you and me. Then I want two for your brothers and one for each of my bandmates. Now pick the one for your brothers. Personally, I want the one with the guy doing the girl bent over from behind for Sal, and the ones in a sixty-nine position for Lucky. On second thought give me on more. I want one for Maurizio.”

Stomping her foot, Francesca was mortified. the salesman was going to think they were perverts. “Ryder I am not comfortable with this.”

“Francesca let Magdalene come out and play and put Mary behind closed doors.”

Francesca didn't think she could be anymore embarrassed, until she heard Bruno break out into a fit of laughter. “Hahaha, well I have a newa found respect for you Raffael !”

Ryder laughed along with Bruno. “Pick one for yourself, this one is on me.”

Bruno’s eyes widen at the price and then decided what the hell the guy was loaded. “I thinka I want the one with her riding the guy reversa cowgirl. That way I can always remember my American friends.”

“You two are unbelievable, I’m waiting outside.” Francesca huffed, she couldn’t wait another second to get out of the store.
