Excerpt

She was wrapped in a shapeless sarong, the eaves of the shelter dripping down on her, her hair covered with a woolen scarf to protect her from the cold and the wind and the wet. She was tiny and forlorn and even in the dark Weston could tell she was anything but pushing fifty, her long dark hair rippling down her back like a veil.

Weston shut off the engine and approached her, still moving clumsily, his left hand still protecting his right ribcage. On his approach, she turned towards him. Her eyes, almond shaped, the color deep, the color of the storm, were wary, but burned with an intensity that struck him. “Ah, ma’am…” He started awkwardly…what do you say? Excuse me, I know you’ve traveled ten thousand miles, but you’re fiancé is dead? Come with me. I know I’m a complete stranger but I’m totally safe?

He stuck out his hand. “I’m Weston…Weston Beaudurant? I’m a friend of Cody Goode.”

At the mention of Cody’s name, her face brightened. “Ah…Cody…Yes…Cody Goode.”

“I’ve…ah…I’ve come to...fetch you…”

“Fetch…?”

“Take…” That wasn’t the right word. “Pick you up…” No. Not that either… “Get you. I’ve come to…” He waved his right hand behind him, indicating his truck. “Bring…Get you…”

“Ah…Bring…To Cody…?”

Oh, Lordy….Now what? He very gently reached out his hand and lightly touched her arm. He could feel how damp her sarong was where the eaves had dripped on it. “Let’s get you out of this rain.” He cupped her elbow with his left hand, and wincing, picked up the single valise with his right.

“You, OK?”

“Oh. Yeah. Yes. Of course. Fine.”

He started to guide her to the truck when a volley of sleet and rain whipped past.

“Shoot!”

Weston set down her valise, and took off his slicker, wincing again as he did so.

“You hurt.” Song said.

“Just a rodeo accident,” Weston replied, wincing again, this time on the inside. Just a rodeo accident that killed your intended. Good God almighty. He placed the slicker over her head and around her shoulders. “Come on. Let’s go.”

He guided her firmly to his truck.

“It’ll be warm inside.”

“You take me to Cody?”

“Ah…in a manner of speaking.” Weston led her to the passenger side. He opened the door, and hoisting her valise to the back, and stifling the shock of pain, helped her inside the cab.

Once Weston got behind the wheel, he started the truck, turning the heat on full blast. Then, he turned toward the woman. “I’m Weston, like I said. Weston Beaudurant.”

“Weston, yes. Cody told me.” She turned towards him eagerly, her hands folded in her lap, fingers entwined, the digits moving anxiously around each.

“And I am Song.”

“Song. That’s an awful pretty name. Song.”

“Song Phan Rang. Thank you, Mr. Bo-do-ran.”

“Weston. Wes.”

She leaned forward though her back was ramrod straight, her liquid black eyes shining as if they could impart the message her meager English could not. “Cody work for you. He tell me all about Weston Bo-doo-ran. He say Weston Bo-doo-ran is very good man.”

Her simple words pierced Weston’s heart like the ice that pelted his windows. Hot tears fogged his eyes.

“Mis-tah Bo-doo-ran…? I say wrong thing?”

Not trusting his speech, Weston shook his head.

“Tell me. What I say?”

Weston looked out the driver’s side window. “I’m sorry…” He looked back to her…. “I’m sorry, Song.

“Cody?”

Weston turned in his seat, facing forward. He brushed at the tears that sprinkled his leathered cheeks brusquely. No way i had he anticipated that, and he was ashamed of himself for allowing that momentary indulgence. “I’m sorry, Song. I…. don’t…” He turned to face her. “There’s jus’ no easy way…” But as he faced her, her eyes eager and bright, he realized he could not even begin to find the right words to say.

“What? What you need tell me?”

He wanted to reach for her hand, but felt that would be too forward. Finally, he just leaned against the car door and spoke. “He’s gone.”

“Gone?”

“There was…an accident……A rodeo…accident…he…”

“Accident? Like you?”

“Yes. The same one.”

“Cody hurt?”

“Yes. He got hurt. Badly hurt. He…Ah…Oh, Lord…… Miss….Song…He…He…”

“Dead?”

“Yes.” Weston sighed. “He’s dead.” He went to reach for her hand again, but once again, decided against it. “I’m sorry… Song... I am…so sorry…”

Fun Facts: The Creation of Western Song

Western Song was first created as a ten minute play. My husband, actor/director Dave Florek, belonged to The InterAct Theatre Company and I was a member of their playwriting group. They produced a delightful series called The Last Gasp, which had been presented to their playwrights as a writing challenge: write a ten minute play that takes place in the judge’s chambers right before the couple’s divorce decree is decided.

We had a lovely friend, let’s call him Bob, who was very shy. We used to joke: “The only way Bob will ever get married is by a mail-order bride.” This was soon after the Vietnam War. There were many mail order brides coming across the seas from Vietnam and other parts of Asia. Thus, a storyline, a few decades later, was born. My handsome husband played Weston, and a beautiful young actress named Janice Chow played Song. That little eight minute play was a big hit!

Friend Stephen Metcalfe, playwright, screenwriter, and novelist read that eight page play and said, “This has to be a full-length screenplay.”
With Stephen’s help as well as a wonderful screenwriting class with an inspiring teacher, I developed Western Song into a full-length screenplay. Again with Stephen’s help, I was able to get the screenplay around to some big fish including Clint Eastwood at Mariposa and Kevin Costner.

Alas—getting it there and getting it done are two very different things. Western Song won a number of screenwriting awards and placements—all very lovely, all in the end non-preventative of the proverbial collecting dust on the shelf.

A Very Favorite Memory: Another dear friend Don Toner who runs a theatre in Austin, arranged a reading of the screenplay. After the reading, a delightful Mom approached me with her ten year old son. “He wanted to shake the hand of the writer,” she told me. He looked up at me with his charming bespectacled face and thrust out his hand.

Takeaway: Never give up your dreams. Whatever they may be. Dare to dream. Dare to believe your dreams will come true.

Excerpt

Watertown was a misnomer, because there wasn’t a body of water anywhere in sight. I soon learned Watertown was in the middle of Downtown Nowhere, the dictionary definition of a sleepy town—a town that was practically in a coma—where the Spanish Moss grew thick and the Southern accents thicker.

Watertown, which wasn’t even officially a town, was inappropriately advertised as the “Best Town on Earth,” with some less than stellar eating establishments lining the wide parkway that led up to the courthouse square. Sprawled along the road were Sandra’s Beauty Nook, Fenster’s Hardware, Shelley’s Seafood, Watertown Bed and Breakfast, and Pizza Napoli. I hadn’t been to many towns outside of Miami, but that slogan seemed like either deceptive advertising or the most hopeful attempt to, as they say in the South, put lipstick on a pig. I couldn’t imagine spending the rest of my life in Watertown. Still, we were in the middle of a recession, and I was happy to have a job. When I got the job at the prison system, I endured the expected incarceration jokes.

“How long are you in for?” my father asked.

“Why does the prison system need Public Relations?” my mother wondered.

“So should I tell my friends that my girlfriend is doing time in the Big House?” Daniel teased.

No matter how many times I told them I was doing PR, not time, I continued to be teased mercilessly. Like every journalism major, I had visions of writing the Great American Novel. Mine would be entitled “My Year in Prison.” Which meant I had to stay on the job for at least a year. Just enough time for my next employer to see that I had staying power. A sense of commitment. A trait my boyfriend was definitely lacking. It turns out I could have written a blockbuster about what I’d seen there. But, as I said, I was determined to carry my secrets to the grave, so my blockbuster exposé never materialized.

Fun Facts

The last line in Marilyn Baron’s The Alibi is “When you’re in love, who needs bagels?”

Author Marilyn Baron spent a year in the Florida prison system, doing PR, not time, as the inspiration for her novel.

Thicker Than Blood Teaser

Excerpt

“Opening the door, he enquired, “What are you doing here, and where is your sidekick?”

“Brody is waiting downstairs. Are you going to ask me in, mate? We need to talk.”

“I wasn’t talking about Brody. I was talking about Koko.”

“If you’re trying to cause a kerfuffle, it won’t work.”

“Don’t have a clue what the hell you just said, but if you say we need to talk and without Brody or Koko, I’m thinking I’m going to need a beer.”

Edward followed him in. “It means a skirmish or a fight. And you might want something a little stronger. I bloody well do.”

If Caden had been more like his old self, that comment might have raised his hackles. Instead, he numbly grabbed his bottle of Jack and two tumblers before heading to his couch. He poured a generous amount in each glass then handed one to Edward.

“What do I owe for the pleasure of your company? What’s in the envelope?”

“All in due time, Caden. I hope you worked today and don’t have a shift later, because that is a generous amount of liquor you poured.”

“I’m off for the next four days, thanks for asking, Mother.”

“A little testy today?”

“Edward, get to the damn point. I’m not really up for a boys’ night.”

Edward made a show of looking around the room. “Where’s your girlfriend?”

Caden took another large sip and let the alcohol burn its way down to his stomach before he wheezed out, “Moved out a while ago.”

“Sorry, I didn’t know. What happened?”

Caden stood, beyond annoyed with all the questions. “If you must know and if it will get you out of my home sooner, she left me after she found out that I’m still in love with Dakota. Happy now?”

Edward’s face broke into a huge smile. “Actually, you couldn’t have said anything else that would make me happier.”

Leaning down and getting into Edward’s face, he replied, “You’re seriously starting to piss me off. Do you have a death wish or something? You do remember your bodyguard is downstairs, right? Say what you have to say and get out.”

Not intimidated one bit, Edward calmly responded, “Do I really have to mop your floors with your arse before I prove to you that I can and will take care of myself? Besides, after I tell you why I came here, I think you’re going to want to kiss my arse and not kick it. Now sit the fuck down and hear me out.”

Taken aback by the conviction in Edward’s voice, Caden obediently sat, taking another huge gulp of his drink. “Start talking.”

“I need some assurances from you first. What I am about to show you is going to mess with your mind, and I want you to be prepared. You have to keep your temper in check and think things through before you go off half-cocked. This involves a lot of people who I care about. They are going to be hurt enough without you adding fuel to the fire. That being said, do I have your word that you will stay calm and think about everyone involved?”

“How can I honestly give you my word if I don’t know what it’s about or how I’ll react?”

Fun Facts Related to Thicker Than Blood

1. When I developed the character of Dakota Martineau I had one person in mind and that was a young woman I saw on the show Say Yes to The Dress. Her name is Katie Allen and she works for Kleinfeld’s. She appears to be a beautiful on the inside as the outside. I never watch TV because I am an avid reader. I read one to two books a week. Someone in my house was watching the episode when Katie buys her own wedding dress and from that day on she became Dakota to me.

2. I have always intrigued in animal totems or the animal spirit that I think best represents the people I know. I have given my husband, all of my children and friends animal totems. I had to research real animal totems for this book and I found it fascinating. I have always believed my spirit animal is a sea otter. I love the water as much as the land. I love to cook and otter’s carry a rock to help assist with collecting food. They are very active parents and so was I with my four sons. They work hard and love to play hard. Yup I am a sea otter in spirit.

3. I love to travel. If you like to travel or just like to hear about places around the world I want you to get excited about travel when reading my books. In this book you will visit Toronto, The Smoky Mountains Tennessee, and Paris. I try to peak your interest enough that you go and visit some of these destinations. Hopefully I will give you locations to visit and things to see. If you are visiting anywhere try to research off the beaten path places and talk to the locals they are the best resources. Also ask or research about legends for places you visit, the stories you hear, will amaze you. Check out my website annemariecitro.com for pictures to destinations in each of my books.

4. I have always loved music but grew up loving rock and pop. For the first time in my life I am listening to country and loving it. The character in this book loves country music so I started to research country music. I started asking friends and family for their favorite country songs or artists. Wow I love my country playlist and continue to source new songs to fall in love with. While on my website you can listen to the playlist for the book while you look at the travel destinations in the book.

5. I had to research about strokes for this book. The information I learned help me to recognize and act when my mother was staying with me over Easter and had a massive stroke. It is amazing the amount of information I must have stored subconsciously and used it when I needed to. I like to think that because of Thicker Than Blood I knew what to do and saved her life.

Excerpt

Sally gets her first history lesson from Nikos

“Well, our work demands a lot of discipline,” the Professor explained while he sat down next to her with his cup of tea; “we start working at dawn, because the midday heat doesn’t allow us to work out in the open. I’m working in the treasure house, that’s what I call it” he added in a slightly embarrassed way, “with yesterday’s finds, which were plenty, and I’m waiting for the youths to tell me their opinion about my first evaluations; and maybe, at the trading place, they’ll find something really old sometime...” he said enthusiastically – and Sally asked, quite puzzled: “Well – I thought that all those things were old?”

“But of course, my dear child,” Professor Nikos smiled, and further explained to his young ‘pupil’ “Only there is a vast difference between a piece that is two thousand years old and one that is four thousand years old. Those finds can speak, if you understand what I mean. If one has learned their language, of course. The differences in the material, the style, the painting, the themes; right here on this spot there are items which give evidence about various quite different cultures, great empires that rose and fell or were destroyed, in the course of centuries. We know the more recent ones by heart, so to speak; anyone who has done three years of Ancient Greek or Latin at school can decipher the inscriptions; but the earlier cultures are still much of a mystery to us, and that is exactly what’s so suspenseful and fascinating about them. We don’t just assemble fragments of clay as if they were jigsaw puzzles; the whole history of mankind is like a giant jigsaw puzzle, and it takes a lot of patience and knowledge, and most of all curiosity, to try and assemble it. And there are still many pieces missing, and perhaps one or two of them are buried right here in the desert sand.”

The wise scientist’s speech had really made a great impression on Sally; and she admitted: “Gee, I’d never thought about it all like that... To me, history had always been just learning boring dates by heart.”

Fun Facts

Turks love Westerns and other old Hollywood movies; they start acting as if they were in a Western during the robbery attempt, and they discuss Gary Cooper and Steve McQueen…

Nikos’ assistants Katerina and Giorgos develop their feelings for each other as well; in their case, the age difference is the other way round: Katerina is 14 years older than Giorgos!

Nikos and Sally are both football fans: Nikos supports AEK Athens, and Sally supports Celtic.
