Book Blast & Giveaway ~ Prosecco Christmas, Pot Love #3, by Sylvia Ashby

Prosecco Christmas
by Sylvia Ashby
Genre: Romantic Comedy/Chick Lit

Blurb

Family is where life begins.
And what better time to spend with your family than Christmas week?

Ashley and Giacomo go to Upper Swainswick, a postcard village ten minutes’ drive from Bath, to stay with Ashley’s mum and stepdad. It’s their last visit before the arrival of their first child.

But babies have a habit of being unpredictable.

So when Ashley goes into labour on Christmas Eve, three weeks ahead of schedule, it takes everyone by surprise.
She’s not ready! Her perfect Birth Plan is packed away in her hospital bag two hundred miles away, she has no going home outfit, and she has a live event planned for New Year’s Eve for her YouTube channel, The Sinking Chef. People have been signing up for it for weeks. She can’t possibly disappoint them on the last day of the year. What is she to do?

The tinsel gets even more tangled when Giacomo’s parents decide to fly from Italy to meet their first grandchild. Hotels are fully booked, so everyone has to stay under the same roof.

Would eleven people in the house, not counting the baby, turn out to be simply too much for Ashley?

Excerpt

We’re sitting around the low living room table about to begin a game of Best of British.

‘Right,’ Mum says. ‘Does everyone have a drink?’

Orna, Clara and Vittorio are drinking Prosecco. I raise my cup of tea. Thomas and Philip ignore her. They wanted to have the rest of the Coca Cola in the fridge, but Mum put her foot down. Also, they think Best of British is a dumb game. They wanted to play Cards Against Humanity, but Orna vetoed them. And now they are in a funk.

‘The question that we’re asking today is what makes British people so British?’ Orna reads aloud the back of the game box.

‘Let see,’ Mum opens the box and tips out the contents. There is a board, which she unfolds. The playing pieces are different colours and each of us has to choose one.

‘I’ll be blue,’ says Philip.

‘No, I’ll be blue!’ Thomas snatches the pieces before Philip can get to it.

‘I said it first!’

‘You can have green!’

‘Muuum! Tell him,’ Philip shrieks.

‘Boys, if you don’t behave there will be no desserts at dinner.’ Mum’s voice is assertive, but her eyes are pleading with them.

‘Tom always gets whatever he wants,’ Philip whines, but Mum stares him down and he settles for green.

Mum throws a shaky smile at Orna, who returns the smile without showing her teeth, then has the tiniest sip of Prosecco and rolls her eyes.

My blood boils in indignation on Mum’s behalf. How dare she treat Mum like that when she’s never had children. She has no idea what it’s like. I open my mouth to say something, then close it. What’s the point? She’s just a horrible woman. And I don’t want to spoil everybody else’s fun.

We each select a piece in silence and put them on the start space on the board.

‘Right, I’ll read out the rules, shall I?’ Mum grips the string of pearls hanging down her neck. She looks quite stressed. I wish she wouldn’t mind Orna.

She carries on.

‘“The Question Master picks up the first Question Card from the box,” I’ll be the Question Master,’ she says before Orna can jump in. ‘“The Question Master picks up the first Question Card from the box, making sure the answers are concealed from all the players on both teams. If it is a Picture Card, the picture is shown to all the players on both teams. If it is a Themed Card, the theme is read out to all the players on both teams. If a question is answered incorrectly then the Question Master can put the same question to the next player for a bonus move. If they answer correctly they move their own piece onto the next space on the board that matches the colour of the question.”’

Mum releases her string of pearls and makes them rattle.

‘Is everything clear?’ Mum looks around for a second time. ‘OK, then the youngest player goes first.’

Philip perks up. He picks up a card and hands it to her.

‘Who were Randolph, Diana, Sarah, Mary and Marigold?’ Mum looks at the answer perplexed. ‘Oh. This is rather hard. Perhaps you can choose another card, Phil. Something with a picture on it.’

‘This is not how you play a game!’ Orna pushes her ample bosom forward. ‘Rules are rules. They are meant to be followed by everyone. How will he learn to follow the rules if he’s always given leeway?’

‘He’s not always given leeway!’ Mum protests. ‘It’s just that… this question is rather out of his “era”.’

‘What do you mean out of his “era”? Since when has knowledge had an “era”? It’s not only current affairs that are important, you know?’ Orna clicks her tongue.

‘I didn’t say that, but he can’t be expected to know everything. He’s only twelve.’

‘Than you offer the question to the person who’s next in turn! When that person answers, he’ll learn.’

Mum rolls her eyes but complies.

Next in turn is Thomas.

‘Thomas, who were Randolph, Diana, Sarah, Mary and Marigold?’ Mum reads the question again.

‘I don’t know.’ Thomas grumbles. ‘This is a stupid game. Cards Against Humanity is much better.’

‘Yes, but we’re not playing Cards Against Humanity,’ Mum snaps at him. ‘We’re playing Best of British, OK?’

Her veneer is cracking. I see Philip throwing a warning glance in his brother’s direction but Thomas ignores him.

Next in turn is Orna.

‘Orna, who were Randolph, Diana, Sarah, Mary and Marigold?’ Mum reads the question for the third time.

‘They are all character from Downton Abbey!’ Orna says victoriously.

‘I’m afraid not, Orna.’ Mum’s mouth twitches. ‘They were Churchill’s children.’

Thomas starts laughing and Mum shoots him a warning frown.

‘Oh,’ Orna’s face turns puce. ‘Very well, then. Carry on.’

Synopsis

Dave Cunningham hates the rampant consumerism that’s come to dominate his family’s Hanukkah celebrations. But a chance to bring a bit of a holiday happiness to his long-time crush, Amit Cohen, helps put him in a more festive mood.

In the quest to craft the perfect gift, Dave tries to urge a few personal details out of stoic Amit. Unintentionally, he learns the Cohen family’s secret: Amit is a golem. But Amit has a problem that runs deeper than his magical origin, and a Hanukkah miracle might be the only thing that will keep the budding flame between him and Dave from going out.

Nothing made Dave Cunningham want to hibernate in his apartment for the winter quite like shopping for Hanukkah gifts with his brother-in-law. He stared up at the shelves full of brightly colored toys with an internal groan. Only another hour, he told himself. Two if he was unlucky. He fought the urge to plug his headphones into his ears to drown out the omnipresent Christmas music filling the store.

“What d’you think of this LEGO set?” Jake held up a large box depicting a desert island playset, complete with pirates and skeletons. His wide brown eyes looked frantic, panicked. He shook the box and pulled a face at the heavy rattling. “Shoshie loves pirates, but she’s probably too old for LEGOs. Or…I mean, is anyone ever too old for LEGOs?”

“She’ll love whatever you get her.” Dave half glared at Jake but caught himself and shook his head. It wasn’t Jake’s fault the delightful minor holiday of their youth had been swept up in consumerism. “You shouldn’t have to get her anything. We go through this same torture every year.”

“It’s not torture; it’s fun. It’s festive!” Jake insisted and flashed a bright smile. “Just thinking about her face when she opens the big one on the eighth night? I love it. And, more importantly, she loves it.”

“My sister likes getting presents,” Dave said. He couldn’t help but blame her for the deterioration of their family’s Hanukkah celebrations. There wasn’t any malice left in his blame, though, just an understanding of the sad truth. In trying to keep Shoshana invested in and excited about her Jewish heritage, their parents had put them on a dark path to celebrating materialism.

It had started when he was in high school and Shoshana was in middle school. First, with her upset at her Christmas-celebrating friends and their incredible hauls of gifts. Then the growing jealousy over not being able to participate in the Santa-spangled sweep of dominant American culture. Finally, they’d all endured one too many crying fits and months-long debates about whether or not modern―or historical―Christmas was even about Jesus’s birthday.

Their mother and father decided to do what some of their friends had done: one small gift for each night of Hanukkah. And since their father had grown up in a Christian family, he liked the idea of gifts exchanged between everyone, not just from parents to children.

For the first few years, the new tradition seemed all right. Shoshana’d been made happy. Dave had even enjoyed helping pick out gifts for his sister and parents. But as time went on, the presents got bigger, and their importance in the scheme of the holiday celebrations almost usurped their father’s latkes. They’d definitely overshadowed the lighting of the menorah and family game time.

“Don’t act all high and mighty like you don’t like gifts,” Jake said, arching a brow. He glanced back at the second box he’d picked up―a pirate LEGO set of a huge ship. “Ship or island?”

“Ship, so she can display it after it’s built.” Dave didn’t bother looking at the boxes or their respective price tags. Jake made plenty good money running Gin Teal, his hipster bar downtown. “I’m not saying I don’t like gifts or that she shouldn’t. Just that Hanukkah isn’t about gifts. It’s the festival of lights. Celebrating the rededication of the Temple. The miracle of the oil. Spending time with family and―”

“You’re saying you don’t want a totally secular Hanukkah, I get it. But Shoshie does.” Jake put the ship set in his shopping cart and headed down the aisle toward the board games. “She’s an atheist. I’m agnostic. It works for us and we can celebrate with old traditions and more modern ones. Without guilt, even.”

Dave plucked at the fringe on his blue-and-silver-striped scarf, his mind a jumble of rebuttals. There was more to it than the consumerism, the secular chokehold. He didn’t mind a dash of either. Modernity wasn’t the problem. It was the lack of balance. And the horrible pressure to be thoughtful and tasteful and have enough money to bring material happiness to his loved ones. He’d tried not giving gifts the year before, after explaining his tight budget and distaste of the focus on presents. No one had batted an eye; they’d all been understanding. And then they’d lavished him with gifts and, without meaning to, had made him feel terrible for not being able to reciprocate. It was a vicious cycle he couldn’t break.

“Maybe I should just celebrate on my own this year. I could open up my schedule to take more evening shifts at work, make a little extra money. Business is picking up with people wanting to do pottery-painting parties to make holiday gifts. And we’re booked up for three of our five holiday-themed painting classes,” Dave said as he trailed after Jake, hands thrust deep into his jeans pockets.

“You just said Hanukkah is about families celebrating together.” Jake shot him another look, pursing his lips in disbelief. A slow smile crept across his lips. “Oh, I know what this Scrooge act is about.”

The gleam in his eyes was the same one Shoshana and his mom got when they tried to set him up on dates.

“Don’t say it!”

“You’re lonely. Romantically lonely.” Jake picked up a game box and skimmed over the descriptions on its side and back. “Hiding at work and in your apartment isn’t going to change that. Besides, no one’s going to be doing art classes the week after Christmas. You’ve told me before your Valentine’s customers don’t start until after the first of the year.”

Dave groaned and picked up a Magic 8 Ball, flipping it over a few times without reading the message in the inky window.

At least Jake hadn’t said the dreaded “you need to find a woman.” Dave had tried dating women, but it had never worked out, for one reason or another. He was too oblivious. Too attentive. Too observant. Not observant enough. And, once, he’d been so lackluster in bed that his girlfriend had told him to stop, thanked him for his time, and walked out of his life.

Dating men hadn’t gone much better, if he were being honest with himself. He was no towering gym-honed testament to manhood, with his short stature and soft middle. He wasn’t highly educated, having done a failed stint at one of the local community colleges. He didn’t have much money, though he did have a decent job at his dad’s art studio. Since he’d gotten his own place, he’d been treading water. No one wanted to stick around and join him in his ambitionless pool.

“You should swing by the bar Saturday night,” Jake said after placing a dice game in his cart. He smiled at Dave with the brotherly warmth that had been there since high school, when they’d only been best friends, and then reached over to grip Dave’s hunched shoulder. “I’ll buy you a beer if you’ll just show up. You don’t even have to talk to anyone. Just…be present.” He smirked and cocked his head to the side, putting one fabulously thick sideburn and wooden earlobe plug on display.

“Har-dee-har. Let’s see what the oracle has to say. Should I go to Jake’s hipster haven on Saturday?” Dave shook the Magic 8 Ball, still secure in its packaging. When he flipped the ball over, the answer floated to the window. Dave sighed. “It is decidedly so.”

“Good!” Jake pushed his cart down toward the seasonal area of the store, beyond the tinsel trees and endcaps bursting with foil bows and rolls of wrapping paper. “Just a heads up, my uncle Amit’s working that night.”

The man was physically everything Dave wasn’t: chiseled muscles, strong chin, tall, huge hands, and slightly wavy black hair that swept perfectly to one side. Amit Cohen straddled that maddening line between men Dave wanted to be and men he wanted to be with. So what if he was a reclusive workaholic?

Excerpt from Not The Same Season

“Shit, speaking of high school, don’t look now.” Of course, he looked. “Becky! Hi. How are you?”

Mitch’s eyes went wide as he saw that seventeen years had not been so kind to his high school girlfriend, Becky. She had gained several pounds and several children, including the one attached to her hip.

“Austin. Mitch, is that you? Oh my, God, I thought he was pulling one over on all of us. You’re really back.”

“I’m really back.” Mitch smiled and raised his hands up in front of him in mock surrender.

“Well, give me a hug.” Becky pulled him in tight, which brought the child with her. Her son didn’t seem to happy to be smooched into some strange man’s chest and showed his dissatisfaction as he spewed his dinner all over Mitch’s shoulder.

“Shit!” Mitch jumped back as if he had been burned by the fires of Hell.

“Oh my God! I’m so sorry.” She turned to her son. “Buck, are you ok?” The child began to wail, disrupting the tranquil atmosphere of the evening.

Hannah ran over to see what the disturbance was. She came face to face with the vomit-covered man of her dreams.

“Well, Mr. Turner. What have you gotten yourself into this time?” Hannah bit down on her lip in an attempt to contain her laughter and shock at the fact that he was actually standing in front of her.

“Oh, Hannah. Buck just up-chucked. Can you help Mitch get cleaned up?” A mortified Becky rocked Buck back and forth in her arms, his little teeth protruding past his lower lip.

“Sure. Come with me.” Hannah offered her hand.

“Always.” Mitch tossed his jacket to Austin then laced his fingers through hers. They made their way through the winter wonderland into a back room.

Hannah nervously dug through a box of T-shirts until she found the one she had hoped to.

“This will have to do. I can wash your shirt or give you a bag to take it home in.”

Hannah watched in rapt fascination as he unbuttoned his shirt.

Mitch enjoyed the sight of her flushed cheeks and licked his lips in the hopes that they would be needed to be pressed against hers soon.

Once his shirt was off and the new one was on, he finally found his voice.

“So, this is your farm?”

“Yep. And your Austin’s older brother.”

He nodded as he took a step closer. “This means I live just down the road.” He raised his palm to cup her cheek. “And we can do this whenever we like.” He pressed his lips gently to hers. Her fingertips trailed up his ribcage as she opened her mouth at his tongue’s invitation.

The feeling was so familiar, yet so new. The realization that they were so close and could actually have a normal relationship overpowered them both. They almost took things to an entirely inappropriate level before a slam of a door in the distance brought them out of their impromptu reunion.

Hannah jumped back at the noise. They looked at each other for a few seconds before they broke into a round of hysterical laughter.

Once slightly calmed down, Mitch brought Hannah into his arms. “Let me take you on that date tomorrow night.”

“So, does that mean no New Year’s Eve?”

He grinned as she fluttered her eyelashes at him. “I’ve already made the reservations, so this will just be a bonus.”

“What will we do?” Hannah was curious. The nightlife in Clarkstown was nowhere near the hotbed of activity the city was.

“Austin’s restaurant closes at five. You can come after that, and I will make you a special private dinner. Please?”

“Hmm. It’s hard to turn down a man that can cook.” She ran her fingertip along the collar of his shirt.

“Then don’t.” He leaned in and began to peck small kisses up her neck until he reached her lips. He hovered above them and whispered, “Please?” He lightly placed three kisses on her lips before she sighed.

“Yes.” She let the word out so softly she barely heard herself. The smile he pressed onto her lips showed without a doubt that he had heard her response.

“I’ve got to get back out there now. We can continue this tomorrow.”

“Defiantly.” Mitch stepped back and fell under the spell of her bright crystal-blue eyes. “I’ll pick you up at six?”

“Yeah, just find me in the lodge.”

One last kiss and they thrust themselves back into the winter wonderland. As they slipped away from each other, they felt an excitement that had been missing from their lives. The excitement of maybe.

Excerpt

Rowan slipped off her coat and hung it on the iron wall rack in her small entryway. She took Theo’s coat and hung it up beside hers. Then she slipped her hand inside his much larger one and led him down the hallway to her bedroom. They didn’t talk and the silence acted like a form of foreplay, heightening the air around them, letting her mind wander to all sorts of sexy scenarios.

All night. She had all night with him.

At her silent maneuvering, Theo sat on the upholstered bench at the foot of her bed. “Stay,” she whispered into his ear.

Her sleepover. Her rules.

She’d left on the small bedside lamp, but the soft lighting wasn’t enough. She wanted to feast her eyes on him, not guess, so she walked over to the standing lamp in the corner and turned it on. Better.

His heated gaze ate her up as she stepped back into his personal space. “The way your body moves in that dress makes me crazy,” he said.

“Good crazy?” She slid her hands inside his tuxedo jacket, around his shoulders, and slowly slipped the coat down his arms, stopping halfway and trapping his arms behind him.

Excitement and I’m-game-for-whatever-you-want flashed in his eyes. “Unbelievably good.”

“I like that.” She undid the buttons of his white dress shirt, pressed her lips to his neck. He smelled so good she hoped his scent lingered on her skin and her sheets for days. “Know what else I like?”

“What?” he asked, his voice husky.

“You.”

“I like you, too. Let me show you how much.”

“After I show you.” She unbuttoned the rest of his shirt. With each open clasp, she placed an open mouthed kiss to his hot, smooth skin. A light dusting of blond hair covered his muscular chest. She moved lower to hard, sculpted abs. He must do at least a thousand crunches a day. The muscles there jumped when she kissed below his belly button.

“If you’re planning to continue progressing this slow, it’s going to be a problem.”

She’d noticed his “problem.” It was hard not to.

“Are you laughing at me?” he goaded, his voice full of fun.

“No, no. I’m laughing at my own silly joke in my head.” She put her hands on his thighs. “Sorry,” she added, suddenly realizing she was nervous and that was why she’d decided on a slow seduction.

This night with Theo meant more than a quick trip between the sheets.

“You never have to be sorry when you’re with me.” His hands cupped her jawline, and he leaned forward to brush a kiss to her lips.

“You freed your arms.”

“I’m taking over.”

She stepped back. “Really?” It wasn’t so much a protest as a challenge. One she had every intention of letting him win. Her rules were overrated.
