Sonny the Scoundrel lives with
Grandpap, the wizard in their rustic village of Sow's Teat. Sonny is dashing and handsome, but his
reputation is widely known. When a
former flame announces her marriage to a suitor from a distant city, he knows
it will be a grand affair attended by visitors from far beyond their
village—including young maidens who are unaware of his dubious reputation.
Since the visitors will include
his favorite type of maidens—those he can romance and never see again, he nicks
a love elixir from Grandpap in advance of a big wedding,. Sonny is confident he can charm any of the visiting
maidens without need of the love elixir, but why work harder than
necessary?
When he adds too much love
elixir to a girl's cup, Sonny discovers making her fall out of love with him is
much harder than he imagined.
Unfortunately, there is no love elixir antidote and Sonny must use his
wits to wriggle out of her clinging claws.
Excerpt
"Sonny the
Scoundrel. What do you want?" The coldness in her eyes and voice was in contrast
to the opulent splendor of her wedding gown. Her father scowled at me from
behind her.
"Want? Why, I want
to wish you all the best, of course. And to ask whether our feelings for each
other are completely expired. Can you truly live without me?" I stepped
closer, my heart straining with emotion. The small bottle of love elixir I had
purloined from Grandpap's potions workspace felt strangely large inside the
inner pocket of my jerkin. Now that I’d confronted Winsond, I no longer had the
courage to use it.
"You are here only
because you want what you cannot have. If I called off my wedding, you would be
chasing other petticoats tomorrow." Her lip curled in disdain. "I am
finding happiness, so you come here to stop my marriage?" She gestured
around at the throng filing Cappersham's tavern. "You will never enjoy
such a blessed event. You could not even find a woman to love you, let alone
have your family, friends and neighbors celebrate your success."
She put hands on hips
and glared at me as if expecting a response. "Not even a lie or
excuse?" She jabbed my chest with a finger. "The only love you will
ever know is when you gaze at your own reflection in a pool of water. You will
never earn the love of a woman!"
"Many women have
loved me," I retorted. "That has never been a problem. The problem is
too many love me and to single out and marry just one maiden would leave such a
number heartbroken."

Sonny
lives in a small town on the edge of reality. His only remarkable
characteristic is imagination. He ignored his grade school teacher's
repeated admonitions to stop daydreaming and get to work.
