Author Interview
Welcome,
N.B. Dixon! I'm so glad you could be with us today!
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m an
author of historical fiction. I have a particular passion for medieval English
history and English folklore. I’m also a musician. I read pretty much anything
I can get my hands on, and I’m a complete radio junkie.
What inspired you to write Outlaw’s Legacy?
I’ve loved the legend of Robin Hood ever since I was a child. However, I
always felt there were gaps in the story. I was intrigued by the idea of
writing the story of Robin Hood as a kind of mythical biography. I thought it
would be fun to follow him from his childhood right the way through to old age.
So the idea for the Outlaw’s Legacy series was born.
How do you come up with a title?
When
writing a series, I quite like to have titles that have a pattern. For
instance, every title in this series has a place in it. Book 1 is entitled ‘Heir
of Locksley’, book 2 ‘Knight of Sherwood’, Book 3 ‘Earl of Huntingdon’, and so
on. You’ll also notice that the word “of” appears in every title. I think it
helps people to remember them. You might also notice that Robin has progressed
up the ranks, going from an heir to a knight to an Earl. I’m afraid the pattern
alters slightly after that.
Are there certain scenes that you find harder to write than others?
I’ve never
found sex scenes easy to write. Trying to find language that nobody else has
used is difficult. There are only so many ways you can describe two people
kissing or making love. I usually end up writing and rewriting sex scenes
several times.
Which authors most inspire you?
My
favourite historical fiction author is Elizabeth Chadwick. She specialises in
books set in medieval England. She’s a fantastic storyteller. I also really
admire Bernard Knight. His descriptions are second to none. No one can bring a
historical setting to life like he can.
What are you working on at the moment?
I’m
currently editing the third book in the ‘Outlaws Legacy’ Series. I still have
two more books to write. I hope to begin writing the fourth book by the end of
the year.
Is there anything you’d like to say to your readers?
I’d like to
thank everyone who has written back to me after reading my books. It’s lovely
to know that I’ve managed to bring joy to someone. I once had a review
comparing me to the author Philippa Gregory, one of the most popular writers of
historical fiction. I don’t believe it’s true for a moment, but it was a
wonderful compliment all the same. There’s nothing an author loves more than to
hear that their work has been appreciated. I hope my readers will continue to
enjoy the series.
Thank you Ms. Dixon for stopping. It was a pleasure getting to know you.
